Mobility ROI Weekly - Week of September 26, 2011, Part 2

This week I will publish several Mobility ROI reports (this is 2/3), as I have a bunch of ROIs that I have saved up over the past few weeks but have not had time to share. The ROI (return on investment) report includes ROIs that I come across in my weekly research on the topic of enterprise mobility. My goal is to create an archive of mobility ROIs that we can all use. Aclaim Pallet Express recently installed a fleet telematics system using Trakm8 technology. Since the installation they have experienced a number of key benefits that contribute to their ROI:
  • ROI - reduced vehicle downtime and associated costs.
  • ROI - driving practices were adjusted and fuel costs reduced as a result of management's ability to monitor and supervise the driver's habits and routes. 
  • ROI - reduced fuel costs as a result of using more efficient routes.
  • ROI - reduced maintenance costs by developing more responsible driving habits.

  • ROI - improved productivity and efficiencies as a result of pharmacists responding to requests for medication by looking up– from their smartphones – the details and characteristics of any of the 86,000 available drugs and instantly provide advice about suitability, availability and, if necessary, substitutions.
  • ROI - improved productivity and care as a result of doctors being able to obtain real-time assistance from UHB’s specialists. Panasonic Toughbooks are being used by ambulance service crews to record patient information and to update hospitals with time sensitive information while on route with patients. The use of Toughbooks in ambulances has the following ROIs:
  • ROI - important and critical health information can be sent to the receiving hospital ahead of the patient’s arrival which improves care and efficiency.
  • ROI - the number of unnecessary patient transfers will be reduced as a result of real-time and mobile data exchanges. 
  • ROI - driving efficiencies as a result of improved routing.
  • ROI - once this system is rolled out nationally, the savings could be as high as £150m annually.

Mobility ROI Weekly - Week of September 26, 2011, Part 1

This week I will publish several Mobility ROI reports (read Part 2 here), as I have a bunch of them that I have saved up over the past few weeks but have not had time to share.  The ROI (return on investment) report includes ROIs that I come across in my weekly research on the topic of enterprise mobility.  My goal is to create an archive of mobility ROIs that we can all use. I hope you find this useful.

Norton Rose Group, an international business law firm, needed a mobile solution for their employees so they would have full access to company resources and information while on business trips.  Mobileiron was chosen to provide a mobile solution for Norton Rose employees. The company received the following ROIs:
  • ROI - Increased productivity by enabling 1,800 employees on three continents the ability to access company resources while traveling between offices and while meeting with clients on business trips.
  • ROI - Employees could keep business related information separate from their personal information on mobile devices which enabled a BYOD (bring your own device) policy.  A BYOD policy provides the benefit of reducing capital expenses.
  • ROI - Extended the user choice for mobility beyond corporate issued BlackBerry devices to iPhones, iPads and more.  Again, a BYOD policy provides the benefit of reducing capital expenses.
  • ROI - Secured and protected sensitive information.  Having a secure mobility system was essential to supporting clients' needs for privacy and the workforce's need for mobility.
  • ROI - Cost reduction by enabling different regions to set-up different policies and configurations to ensure compliance with local regulations.  This eliminated the need for different MDM (mobile device management) systems in different regions that would have increased costs.

Click Software recently provided Angilan Water, a UK based utility company, with a range of mobile enterprise solutions that included mobile-based scheduling and management programs that allowed employees to work more efficiently. The reported ROIs were:
  • Increased service levels by 33 percent
  • Reduced average travel per job by 24 percent
  • Decreased the works backlog by 95 percent in some process areas

The HMTL5 Standard - Where Do Things Stand?

In this article we are going to explore the status of the HTML5 standard. The HTML5 specification from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) can be found at http://dev.w3.org/html5/spec/Overview.html.  A version-control record of all changes to the HTML5 standard are available at:

Predictions for the completion of the HTML5 standard vary widely. An article from Vision Mobile, published in June, states that HTML5 completion is not expected before 2014. (http://www.visionmobile.com/rsc/researchreports/HTML5%20and%20what%20it%20means%20for%20the%20mobile%20industry.pdf

In May of 2011 W3C announced, "W3C reconfirmed today that, as announced, these specifications are on track to become stable standards in 2014."

Regardless of when the HTML5 standard is completed, developers are taking advantage of the HTML5 features currently available. Contemporary Analysis recently conducted an online survey with web developers about HTML5. The survey was conducted on behalf of appendTo, an HTML5 and JavaScript consulting company. 84 percent of developers indicated they plan to use HTML5 in projects within the next 6 months. From the responses, the survey revealed the top HTML5 features that developers plan on using. Beyond the new HTML5 semantics, the most popular choices were:
  • Local data storage
  • Multimedia capabilities
  • Advanced graphics capabilities
  • 3D effects
Other HTML 5 features which developers want are:
  • Geolocation
  • Interactivity features, such as drag-and-drop

We believe that HTML5 is the key for a cross platform, device agnostic, mobile applications. ClickSoftware's enterprise mobility products for workforce management and service optimization are designed as productivity tools for both the enterprise's employees as well as its customers. Even if an enterprise can decide on a standard device for its employees (which we doubt can be implemented as people are looking to use their own personal devices for work purposes …), it certainly cannot do so for its customers. IDC is forecasting that mobile Internet users will grow by an annual compound rate of 16.6 percent through 2015, when they will pass PC and other wireline Internet users.  Read Original Content

Flattening the Stack with Integrated App Development, MDM, and Hosted Solutions

I want to thank my friend and mobility expert André Guillemin for writing this article and sharing it with all of us.

As the mobility needs of the enterprise continue to evolve, solutions providers are under increasing pressure to offer product suites that provide mobile device management, application development, and hosting capabilities all under one roof. Currently, solutions providers tend to specialize in one of the three, forcing most enterprise companies to purchase multiple solutions. Stacked on top of each other, an MDM, app development platform, and a hosting services package may provide the total functionality needed, but it’s not the most elegant solution.

So how are providers responding? The emerging trend among the major players in the mobile enterprise application platform (MEAP) space is to start piling on the features…and fast. Antenna Software just bumped up its MDM capabilities with the release of its Volt platform, which enables companies to publish and manage HTML5 apps with many common enterprise MDM features such as remote wipe. Another example is Pyxis Mobile, which recently rolled out a hosting solution that pairs nicely with its app development platform.

With the race on to expand their capabilities, you may wonder if these companies are biting off more than they can chew. It doesn’t seem so. For starters, most of the companies in this space built their business by developing specific solutions to specific problems. Only recently have they been pressured to expand beyond their core competencies in order to supply more comprehensive solutions that address multiple components of the enterprise mobility ecosystem. Secondly, many companies are filling those gaps not by trying to reinvent the wheel but by partnering with other specialists and rolling out white labeled products. The best example is hosting, where most providers have turned to dedicated hosting services companies to add that capability to their product portfolio because it’s faster, easier, and better for the customer than trying to build it themselves.

Where does all that leave us? As always, the devil is in the details. When shopping around for middleware solutions, make sure you’re prepared with a thoroughly vetted list of requirements and use that list to check it against the capabilities of the products you’re evaluating. Know what apps you’re going to build, who you’re going to build them for, and how they’re going to be used – not just today, but have a strategy that projects out at least three years. Think about the way mobility will grow and evolve within your company. You may be focused on employee apps today but what about customers and supply chain partners? How will your entire company be using mobility in three to five years?

Being able to paint the broad picture and then hone in on the details is critical because knowing exactly which capabilities, functions, and features you require in your development and management tools will help you avoid costly mistakes down the line.

The Benefit of Custom Mobile Applications

There are at least two kinds of mobile applications for large enterprises to consider:
  1. Me-too-apps
  2. Only-me-apps
Me-too-apps often provide efficiency gains and remove the friction from various workflows and processes.  These apps are often simple, easy to implement and off-the-shelf.  Soon all of your competitors will also recognize the value of these mobile apps and will implement.

Only-me-apps are customized applications that often take advantage of your unique processes, unique combinations of back office systems and unique products and services.  Many companies have dozens of different business solutions, ERPs, bespoke database applications, BI systems and other software applications in their inventory.  There can literally be hundreds and even thousands of different combinations of these systems that can be connected together to support mobile workers and applications, and to provide unique competitive advantages.

I have met with many very large companies that view their particular mobile application as a competitive advantage.  One large CPG company that I met with this summer said they have a mobile application that is over 10 years old, but it still provides them with a competitive advantage in their industry.

Mobile applications and mobile strategies that will truly transform a company are likely going to involve the following:
  1. Very smart people
  2. Very smart strategies
  3. Mobile technologies that support points 1 and 2.
In order to effectively support a customized mobile application environment that may have dozens of mobile solutions, you will require specific kinds of platforms, toolkits and mobile security systems to set it up and to manage it.
