Mobile Expert Video Series: PSION's Gregg Anderson

As much as we like to talk about smartphones and tablets on this site, there remains a huge market for ruggedized and industrial grade mobile handheld computers.  Gregg Anderson, with PSION, shares some of the latest developments in this area in an interview that I recorded with him last week at the SAPinsider Mobile2012 conference.

Syclo and IBM's Maximo for Enterprise Asset Management

Many people know Syclo as a mobility partner of SAP, particularly in the EAM (enterprise asset management) space, but did you know they also work with IBM's Maximo in the EAM space?  I was reading today about Syclo's Smart Work Manager version 7.5 for Maximo.  Here is a list of some of the supported features and capabilities:

An area of particular interest to me was the workflow description in Syclo's press release, "...your technicians are guided through intuitive, action-driven workflow to ensure they capture all relevant information - including work performed, failure codes, parts used, and more."  The ability to guide your workforce through specific tasks, in remote locations, using mobile apps is becoming increasingly important, especially in utilities where they are losing many of their most experienced workers due to retirement.

Enterprise asset management is one of those areas that many solutions come together.  A mobile EAM system can include:

  • Work orders (field service management)
  • Time and attendance (HR and payroll)
  • Parts and material used (inventory levels, suppliers, re-order, etc.)
  • Safety plans (worker safety and compliance) 
  • GIS/GPS tracking
  • etc.
Most mission critical mobility solutions, that offer competitive advantages, are not just one mobile app connected to one backend system.  It is a mobile app connected to many backend systems in unique combinations.

Enterprise Mobility Solutions with Depth and Width

Some enterprise mobility solutions are "containers", "shells", "frameworks", "libraries" or "scripts."  They don't in themselves have a lot of business logic or business process expertise.  These kinds of enterprise mobility solutions often provide interesting low cost efficiency improvements, but the efficiency gains are typically small incremental improvements.  Enterprise mobility vendors, however, that bring to the table depth and width in their business logic and business process expertise can revolutionize the way a company operates and significantly impact the company's bottom line.

Often companies will start with simple low cost mobile solutions to test the waters and to demonstrate some efficiency improvements, but the best in class will move beyond that and research how the new world of mobility can actually revolutionize their business.

Let me provide as an example of depth and width, an excerpt from ClickSoftware's recent software update announcement.

This offering optimizes the deployment of the entire workforce; not just those employees out in the field, but also those who are office/plant based, using the same Workforce Management Platform. This means that employees can be quickly aligned to company objectives across any number of businesses or departments regardless of their role. 

This update reaches beyond just dispatching work orders to mobile service technicians, it now seems to include the ability to optimize the schedule and deployment of all workers in all departments  This requires sophisticated and complex business logic (depth and width).  These new kinds of optimized workforce scheduling solutions also include mobile clients.  Here is more on that:

ClickSoftware’s Mobility Studio now allows enterprises to build and configure mobility applications that utilize the latest HTML5 standards so that they are device agnostic.

It is my opinion that the business logic and business process expertise is where the most value comes from in any mobile solution.  The more you can simplify the enterprise mobility component the better.  Here is more on that topic:

Version 8.1.5 adds to this the Business Views Engine enabling business users with no technical ability to create and configure modular mobile applications with no coding, and using drag and drop wizards to meet role-based requirements.

To truly revolutionize your business, you need depth and width in your mobile applications that provide sophisticated algorithms, in-depth business logic and business process expertise.  Revolutionary mobility is not usually simple mobility.  It takes some thought and execution to be best in class.

Consumer Smartphones or Industrial Grade Smartphones?

One of the interesting things that I have observed in the mobile industry is the differences in perspective between mobile industry veterans coming out of the blue collar and barcode scanning space, and the more recent mobile rookies with a focus on supporting white collar workers and smartphone devices.  One of the differences is that veterans coming out of the barcode scanning space seem to appreciate the mobile device and its capabilities as a mobile data collection tool to a greater degree than most rookies in the industry.

Having the right mobile devices can in many cases make a big difference in the efficiency of a mobile workforce.  Can you read the screen in bright sunlight?  Can it withstand daily drops and bumps?  Can it fit in the pocket and be ruggedized at the same time?  Is the barcode scanner designed for high volume hourly use?  Can the device be used in one hand, or does it require two?  Can it handle rain, dust and snow?  Will the battery last the entire workday?

Many industrial grade devices have additional sensors and accessories that make them more efficient.  Let me provide an example.  The Psion EP10 comes with the following in-built interactive sensors:
  • Proximity sensors
  • Light sensors
  • Accelerometer
  • Gyroscope
  • Digital compass
  • GPS
These sensors enable automatic backlighting, screen rotation and precise data geo-tagging.  If you are out geo-tagging assets for your SAP EAM system, then you had better be able to use the barcode scanner all day long without running out of batteries, and if working outdoors the barcode scanner had better be bright enough to work satisfactory in the bright sunlight so you don't waste time.

Purpose built mobile devices are often the best fit for specific tasks.  It doesn't do any good to give a person a device than can't make it through the day completing its intended task. These are all important considerations with looking at productivity in the field.  Wouldn't it be sad if a company invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into just the right field services software application to maximize workforce productivity, but then failed to provide the right mobile devices capable of achieving the maximum ROI?

Consumer grade smartphones are great, however, for industrial and production purposes you may still find significant value in purpose-built, ruggedized industrial grade mobile devices and smartphones.
