Gartner's New 2012 Magic Quadrant for Field Services

Have you seen the new 2012 magic quadrant on field services from Gartner?  It is quite strange.  SAP is listed in the bottom left even after the Syclo acquisition?  I thought Syclo was all about mobile enterprise asset management which is very closely aligned with field services (think preventative maintenance and repairs).

ClickSoftware, however, is listed far above everyone else in the top right quadrant.  The strange part is that SAP resells ClickSoftware's solutions as the SAP Workforce Scheduling and Optimization solution and it utilizes the SAP Mobility Platform.  What a small world we all live in.  It seems the Gartner analysis is less about the technology, and more about how it is positioned in the market.  I say that because you can get the same solution from both companies yet they are far apart on the MQ.

My analysis is that field services is much more than just a mobile app platform.  It includes dynamic scheduling, rostering, forecasting, time sheets, planning, etc.   Mobility is simply extending and enhancing the power of those solutions.  Without those connected back-office solutions, mobility loses much of its value.  That is how I interpret the MQ.  What about you?

More pondering... This must present a real dilemma for SAP sales folks selling into field services opportunities.  Should they sell their prospects the SAP Workforce Scheduling and Optimization solution by ClickSoftware, which is on their price list and listed in the very top right Gartner MQ for Field Services and sits on top of the SAP Mobility Platform, or should they sell their prospects just SAP Mobility Platform which is listed in the bottom left.  Yikes!  That is going to require some strategy.

In a timely but coincidental note, I will be joining Stewart Hill from ClickSoftware at 11 AM EST on November 13th to present a webinar titled, "Using Mobile Technology to Drive Business Visibility and Real-time Decision Making."  What a fun subject!!!  I invite you to join the discussion by registering here.

What I Learned at SAP TechEd 2012 about Enterprise Mobility

I learned a lot at SAP's TechEd 2012 this week.  Here are some of my impressions and notes.  SAP, if I have any of this wrong please correct me!
  • SAP hired a new M2M leader that reports into Sanjay Poonen.
  • SAP's Vishal Sikka and Sanjay Poonen both spoke about the "Internet of Things", also known as M2M (machine to machine) communications.  This is a huge emerging technology trend.
  • Vishal Sikka hinted at the potential of using Hana on Ariba.  Very interesting!
  • Learned SAP's SuccessFactor has a mobile application
  • SAP Mobility Platform will be the brand for all mobile technologies.  The mobile middleware you ultimately choose under the SMP brand could be NetWeaver Gateway, Syclo's Agentry or SUP.  It will all be there and serve different purposes in the near term.  Long term there will be more convergence.
  • 50% of Syclo's customers were IBM Maximo customers (random I know)
  • Phase one of the Syclo and SMP (SAP Mobility Platform) convergence will happen Q1 and a roadmap has been defined for the rest
  • SAP is now fully embracing partner solutions for developing mobile apps (think ClickSoftware, Sencha, Appcelerator, Cordova, etc.)
  • SAP Box, a DropBox like solution, is being developed by SAP and secured with Afaria, is coming soon.
  • SuccessFactor's social networking platform JAM, will be the social and collaboration platform of choice from SAP - bye, bye StreamWorks.
  • SAP now has 18,000 iPads, 16,000 iPhones, 2,000 Androids and 4,000 BYOD supported mobile devices.  These are all secured and managed through Afaria.  Oliver Bussman and his team truly speaks from experience on issues related to mobility.
  • SAP's BYOD policy is bettered called BYODALAIIOOTT - Bring your own device as long as it is one of these ten...
  • Sanjay Poonen referenced that Afaria could scale up to support half a billion devices...
  • SAP's internal support of Android is still limited to Samsung devices.  SAP and Samsung have a special technology partnership that enables SAP to better secure Samsung Android devices
  • SAP is talking a lot about Afaria and SAP Mobility Platform in the cloud
  • Sanjay Poonen mentioned a home design app, that allows users to design their own home by choosing colors and other decorations.  The app data is aggregated and analyzed to predict the popularity of various items and colors by the retail stores and manufacturers.  Very cool example of integrating social networking tools with sales forecasting and SCM.
  • SAP has set-up internal "Apple Genius-like" bars in their offices to help employees with mobile devices and apps.
  • I heard a lot of excitement from many SAP people, and other CIOs about Windows 8.  There is a lot of pent-up demand and hope.
  • Developing a mobile strategy is still the big bottle neck at companies
  • Afaria was referenced as extending out to secure M2M devices
  • With new UI designs from Microsoft (think Metro) developers may want to design the same app with completely different UIs instead of just simple OS changes...hummm more work and components to manage
  • Heard a CIO say a rule of thumb is that each new mobile apps will require 1 FTE to maintain it
  • Heard of an effort inside SAP to connect their GRC (governance and risk?) to Afaria so mobile policies could be automatically enforced
Did you miss SAP TechEd 2012?  I have many video interviews of mobility expert that I met there!  More will be published next week.

Mobile Apps for Almost Everything

On Monday, August 27, 2012, The Wall Street Journal published The Technology Journal Report dedicated to mobile apps.  The report included some very interesting numbers that I want to share:
  • The average smartphone user will download 37 mobile apps this year
  • 36 billion mobile apps will be downloaded in 2012
  • 136 billion mobile apps are predicted to be downloaded in 2017
  • The average smartphone user in the USA spends 94 minutes per day using mobile apps
  • The average smartphone user in the USA spends 72 minutes per day using browsers
  • There are 650,000 apps available in the Apple App Store
  • There are 600,000 apps available in Google Play
In addition to these numbers the article identified many different categories of mobile apps:
  • Find Shopping Deals
  • Remember Everything
  • Find a Restaurant
  • Get Fit and Stay Fit
  • Go to the Movies
  • Take a Trip
  • Parenting
  • Educating Your Preschooler
  • Find a House
  • Manage Your Money
  • How a Remote Meeting
  • Teach Math and Science to Kids
  • Prepare a Meal
  • Keep Track of Your Kids
  • Meet Up with Friends
  • Manage Your Passwords
  • Read Books, Magazines and Newspapers
  • Watch Movies and TV
  • Take, Enhance and Share Photos
  • Learn to Play Music
  • Gardening
  • Find a Date
I'm amazed at how thoroughly mobile apps have become a part of our personal and work lives.  I travel a lot.  I use mobile apps continuously.  Even though I have been working in enterprise mobility since 2000, I never stop being excited at cool new apps and impressed with their utility.

This past summer my family traveled with me on my Eggs with Benedict Mobile Strategies speaking tour in Europe.  We utilized the AirBNB app to arrange apartments to stay in.  We loved it!  We used our mapping functionality any time we were confused as to our exact location.  We downloaded maps to our iPhones and iPads while on WiFi connections so we could avoid international data roaming charges.  We researched all of our travel destinations using tablets and smartphones.  We kept track of each other across many different cities so we could meet up at the right places and times.  We did our banking from mobile apps and the mobile web.  We found great restaurants.  We reviewed the Underground schedule in London and bought train tickets all via our smartphones.  Mobile apps and the mobile web have completely changed our travel experiences over the past decade.

The vast amount of information at our finger tips is mind boggling.  It thrills me to think that the best information I can find on the Internet, is available even in the poorest regions of the world via the mobile Internet.  Whenever, I or a family member feels ill, we can quickly look up great medical advice.  Again, this medical advice is available now worldwide.

I travel, write, speak, teach, report, conduct research and interviews all using mobile devices.  My business travels with me.  I use the mobile app TripIt to organize my travels.  I use the mobile Skype app to see and communicate live with my family while I am on the road.

Mobile apps and the mobile web have revolutionized our personal lives, and it is doing the same with complete business processes and industries.  Every company needs to recognize the impact enterprise mobility, the mobile web and mobile apps will have on their industry and their competitive landscape.  It is not just a passing fad.

SAP Enterprise Mobility Update with Sanjay Poonen

Sanjay Poonen
I had the privilege of spending time on the phone last week with SAP's President and Corporate Officer, Sanjay Poonen.   He has responsibility for several of the innovation products at SAP, and also has overall responsibility for mobility.  I must take a moment to apologize again to Sanjay for being late to the call.  Let me digress for a moment, my iPhone and MacBook Pro have never processed calendar invites reliably.  They mess up the time zone conversions.  Am I the only one with this issue?  Apple has tried a dozen times to fix it, without luck.  OK, back to my call with Sanjay.

Sanjay updated me on the record Q2 sales numbers for all aspects of SAP’s innovations – Hana, Mobile and Cloud, and then we went into more details around all things mobile.  He also shared how Syclo's Founder Rich Padula, has joined his team, and is now going to be responsible for all SAP mobile apps, including Syclo.  This is a good move as Rich is a proven mobile industry veteran.  Also, Syclo's mobile solutions are now being fully integrated with SUP.  This effort is already under way, and is targeted to be completed by Q1, 2013.
Rich Padula

Sanjay explained that SAP mobility is now organized into four areas:
  • Mobile Security
  • Mobile Application Platform
  • Mobile Applications (B2E and B2C)
  • Messaging Infrastructure (Sybase 365)

He also shared that there is a Mobility rebranding effort going on now that is expected to be announced in Q4 of this year.  SAP will be simplifying and unifying all of their different mobility brands, to centralize around SAP as the main brand for Mobility, over Sybase, which had more of a database brand associated with it.

SAP continues to charge ahead aggressively with enterprise mobility.  Sanjay shared that they are heavily recruiting mobile expertise, with some very strong talent from competitors in the MDM and MEAP space coming over to SAP.  Over the next few weeks several well-known mobile industry veterans will be joining SAP.  One of them is former Gartner Analyst, Bill Clark.
On another topic - SAP is now investing significantly more resources into Afaria.  That is smart, because while SAP has garnered top ratings in the Mobile App Platform and Mobile Apps space, they have seemed to have fallen behind competitors in 2011, at least in mindshare. SAP has nearly tripled the development investment in Afaria this year, and has been winning some big deals that are replacing other MDM vendors.  Sanjay said that in Q2, SAP also did the largest deal in the history of the MDM industry, a high 7-figure dollar OEM deal with a large global hardware manufacturer.  He said that Afaria grew almost 500% YoY in Q2, and he is seeing a great deal of interest from customers that are seeking the scalability and dependability of SAP's solutions.

SAP has recently announced a new SAP Mobile Apps Partner program designed to give mobile app developers free access to the SAP Mobile Platform.  I am a strong believer in the concept of try-it-before-you-buy-it and this seems like a smart move to expand their developer base.  I think anything that can be done to remove friction from the system is a good idea.  Let the developer community have access to it, and let it stand on its own merits. Sanjay said the goals of the Mobile business, is to not just create a 1 billion Euro business by 2015, but to deliver a platform for tens of thousands of mobile apps to be built on, and get millions of developers successfully using their mobility platform.

Sanjay and I spent quite a bit of time talking about where mobile security is going, beyond MDM.  From MDM to Mobile App Management, to Secure Content Management, to eventually M2M (machine-to-machine) communications.  He talked about how this field will have a big impact in SAP’s plans.  In fact, Sanjay had just chaired a conference call with about 50 SAP internal people to brainstorm about M2M, and there is a great deal of excitement around SAP’s plans in this area.

M2M is basically wireless embedded chips that can be connected to remote sensors.  These sensors can then wirelessly message whatever data they are monitoring.  For example,  the engine of a bulldozer is started in the middle of the night.  The sensor on the bulldozer messages an alert to a security person to investigate.  Just about any machine or piece of equipment on a plant floor can message its status to a central server.  A dashboard on the M2M server can be used to monitor M2M equipped devices across a large geographic area.

M2M can play a part in many different SAP business processes.  M2M communications requires security, messaging platforms, integration, analytics and much more.  Industry analyst predict that by 2025 there will be over 50 billion connected devices in the world.  This Internet of Things can message their statuses to systems all around the world.  You can easily see how M2M will be an important component of many different processes and systems.  SAP fully recognizes this and is organizing their forces now, has some big plans being baked in Research and Development, and they are hiring some key people from within the industry to lead the M2M effort within the company.  Expect to hear a lot from SAP on how the Internet of Things, aka M2M, will progress, shortly.

I want to thank Sanjay for sharing his insights and updates with us.

Mobilizing Your Enterprise with SAP by SAP Press

SAP Press has just published a new book titled Mobilizing Your Enterprise with SAP that I recommend reading.  It is the best I have read.  I had the honor of being asked to write the Forward for this book along with Sanjay Poonen, SAP President and Corporate Offier, Technology and Innovation Products.

Here is an excerpt:

Enterprise mobility is transformational.  It is not just about a particular mobile device, screen size, operating system or online application store.  It is a new way of conducting business that demands our attention.  Companies will succeed or fail based in large part on their ability to respond to this reality.

Within the pages of this book are detailed many of the most important enterprise mobility trends and technical requirements that are shaping our IT landscapes today.  Nearly all of us easily recognize and appreciate the value and utility of the smartphone and tablet in the consumer space.  Today, the great minds of business and enterprise IT have turned their attentions to contemplating the full range of benefits that mobile technologies can bring to their individual regions, markets, industries and operations.

This book opens by describing two specific waves of enterprise mobility, extending and creating.  Extending our ERP and other IT investments out to mobile devices is one wave, and creating completely new business processes is another.  Extending our internal IT investments to mobile devices offers important incremental improvements that deliver efficiencies, productivity gains and improved customer interactions to name just a few, however, creating completely new processes that are only possible with mobile technology and real-time communication is the giant leap forward.

What can be done differently in your business if you have real-time visibility to the status and location of your workforce and all of your resources, assets, inventories, supplies, and customer needs?  How can you improve your business performance by using real-time data in the field to drive better and faster decision-making?  How can you beat your competition and improve your business performance by developing real-time unified views of your operation?  What is possible if you have complete situational awareness because you have implemented a network centric operational strategy that provides full visibility and maximizes your ability to make good and fast decisions from anywhere?  The answers to these questions will dictate your company’s future.

This book is the first of its kind.  It is the first book I have ever read that attempts and succeeds in covering the full breadth of the enterprise mobility landscape from mobile business trends to specific technical development strategies within the SAP ecosystem.  I would even go further and endorse this book as required reading for anyone, SAP user or not, that wants to understand the full scope of enterprise quality mobile solutions and how it is possible to transform your business with this knowledge.

Finally the Tide of Rugged Android Devices Begins

In my opinion, Microsoft blew it when they left the rugged mobile device manufacturers hanging for years with no meaningful upgrades or upgrade path to the Windows Mobile 6.5x operating system.  They sentenced the ruggedized device industry to compete against the iPhone, iPad and Android consumer devices.  This meant service organizations worldwide started considering the merits of switching to consumer devices, with new operating systems that had many more features rather than upgrading to new ruggedized mobile devices.

Otterbox and other rugged case manufacturers were definitely the winners of this Microsoft orchestrated industry trend.  They produced many great ruggedized cases that added device protection and gave buyers confidence that using consumer devices in rugged environments was worth the risk.

Today, however, the tide of rugged Android devices is starting to enter the market as demonstrated by this marketing piece from Honeywell that I received in the mail today announcing the new rugged Dolphin 7800 EDA running on Android.  Here is how they describe it, "Honeywell’s new Dolphin® 7800 Android™ rugged EDA pairs the intuitive Google® Android™ operating system with remote device management capabilities and invaluable security features, making the device enterprise ready."

For a time the Android operating system was difficult to secure, since every device and device manufacturer seemed to have their own version of it, but the MDM (mobile device management) or MAM (mobile application management) vendors have seemed to resolve much of that challenge now as this piece from the MDM/MAM vendor Soti suggests, "SOTI, a leader in cross-platform mobile device management, is announcing that its unique MDM solution provides advanced and consistent management for all Android devices, regardless of the device manufacturer."

I have spoken with and interviewed many rugged handheld manufacturers over the past few months and most if not all have rugged Android devices in development.  I believe that going forward service organizations will soon be able to get the latest Android operating system features in the rugged device of their choosing.
