What I Learned at SAP TechEd 2012 about Enterprise Mobility

I learned a lot at SAP's TechEd 2012 this week.  Here are some of my impressions and notes.  SAP, if I have any of this wrong please correct me!
  • SAP hired a new M2M leader that reports into Sanjay Poonen.  
  • SAP's Vishal Sikka and Sanjay Poonen both spoke about the "Internet of Things", also known as M2M (machine to machine) communications.  This is a huge emerging technology trend.
  • Vishal Sikka hinted at the potential of using Hana on Ariba.  Very interesting!
  • Learned SAP's SuccessFactor has a mobile application
  • SAP Mobility Platform will be the brand for all mobile technologies.  The mobile middleware you ultimately choose under the SMP brand could be NetWeaver Gateway, Syclo's Agentry or SUP.  It will all be there and serve different purposes in the near term.  Long term there will be more convergence.
  • 50% of Syclo's customers were IBM Maximo customers (random I know)
  • Phase one of the Syclo and SMP (SAP Mobility Platform) convergence will happen Q1 and a roadmap has been defined for the rest
  • SAP is now fully embracing partner solutions for developing mobile apps (think ClickSoftware, Sencha, Appcelerator, Cordova, etc.)
  • SAP Box, a DropBox like solution, is being developed by SAP and secured with Afaria, is coming soon.
  • SuccessFactor's social networking platform JAM, will be the social and collaboration platform of choice from SAP - bye, bye StreamWorks.
  • SAP now has 18,000 iPads, 16,000 iPhones, 2,000 Androids and 4,000 BYOD supported mobile devices.  These are all secured and managed through Afaria.  Oliver Bussman and his team truly speaks from experience on issues related to mobility.
  • SAP's BYOD policy is bettered called BYODALAIIOOTT - Bring your own device as long as it is one of these ten...
  • Sanjay Poonen referenced that Afaria could scale up to support half a billion devices...
  • SAP's internal support of Android is still limited to Samsung devices.  SAP and Samsung have a special technology partnership that enables SAP to better secure Samsung Android devices
  • SAP is talking a lot about Afaria and SAP Mobility Platform in the cloud
  • Sanjay Poonen mentioned a home design app, that allows users to design their own home by choosing colors and other decorations.  The app data is aggregated and analyzed to predict the popularity of various items and colors by the retail stores and manufacturers.  Very cool example of integrating social networking tools with sales forecasting and SCM. 
  • SAP has set-up internal "Apple Genius-like" bars in their offices to help employees with mobile devices and apps.
  • I heard a lot of excitement from many SAP people, and other CIOs about Windows 8.  There is a lot of pent-up demand and hope.
  • Developing a mobile strategy is still the big bottle neck at companies
  • Afaria was referenced as extending out to secure M2M devices
  • With new UI designs from Microsoft (think Metro) developers may want to design the same app with completely different UIs instead of just simple OS changes...hummm more work and components to manage
  • Heard a CIO say a rule of thumb is that each new mobile apps will require 1 FTE to maintain it
  • Heard of an effort inside SAP to connect their GRC (governance and risk?) to Afaria so mobile policies could be automatically enforced

Mobile Expert Video Series: Sybase's Jagdish Bansiya

I want to highlight a couple of interviews that I have recorded this week at SAP TechEd 2011 that focus on mobile strategy.  Jagdish Bansiya PHD is the CTO of Enterprise Mobility at Sybase, and in this interview he shares his thoughts on what it means for mobile applications to be truly "transformational."  I will publish another interview later today that I recorded with Ahmed El Adl PHD that also focuses on mobile strategies, so watch for this one as well.

SAP TechEd 2011 - Session ID MOB102: Mobile Technologies and the Real Time Enterprise

Twitter and Tweet Convert - Kevin Benedict

Twitter Conversion
It's true.  I am but a recent convert to Twitter.  Since I typically write obnoxiously long articles, I had a difficult time understanding the value of a technology that limits itself to 140 characters.  I have now, however, seen the light and the light is an iPad app.

I use the iPad application Flipboard.  Flipboard and Paper.li are two applications that convert RSS feeds, tweets, Facebook and other content into online newspapers or magazines that are easy to read.  I am very impressed with Flipboard's ability to show the original tweet, and automatically open up the tiny URL link and display the content in the online newspaper format. 

I was simply too impatient to read through a list of tweets with enticing titles about world changing mobile technology, and not be able to see the content without waiting for the link to open in a browser and display the content.  In Flipboard it is a one step process.  All the tweet links are automatically opened and displayed in the newspaper.  BEAUTIFUL!

The Power Behind a Mobile Retailing Application


Mobile Retailing Apps
Most significant mobile applications are integrated with a powerful database application.  At the SAP TechEd conference last week SAP demonstrated an iPad business solution that considered the weather forecast in various regions as indicators of sales.  At TecEd I also met with Ed Krufka, EVP of Solution Services at Smartsoft Mobile Solutions.  He shared some of the complexity of applications he has been working on in the mobile retailing space.

These mobile applications are powered by sophisticated business intelligence solutions that are used to help sell more products to retail customers.  They use knowledge of the customer's history, buying patterns, the weather, locations etc., to change and customize the content on mobile applications.

SAP Mentor John Appleby on SAP Enterprise Mobility Plus News and Thoughts

Fellow SAP Mentor John Appleby published a terrific and well thought out article summarizing his views on the current state of SAP enterprise mobility.  He works as a technical consultant in the UK for Bluefin Solutions Ltd., so has a much more technical view than I can provide.  I recommend reading it.

I do have a question that has been in the back of my mind this week.  If mobility is so important to SAP, where were all their mobility executives at SAP TechEd?  Where was John Chen, Bob Stutz, Kevin Nix, etc, which are the folks responsible for SAP enterprise mobility?  There were over 5,000 attendees.  My session on the Future of Enterprise Mobility had over 200 registrants.  It seems in hindsight, that SAP should have brought the big boys of mobility to the show.

Thursday at SAP's TechEd 2010 - Enterprise Mobility

Today (Thursday) I was able to finally get enough time to sit down in the Innovation Center with SAP folks and see demonstrations of their new enterprise mobility applications.  I saw the following applications:
  • SAP Prove - Workflow approvals (expense approvals)
  • SAP CRM Mobile
  • SAP Expense Reports
I loved the SAP Prove application because of the GUI.  It was an image of a desk with a crumpled piece of paper on it that had an expense request written on it.  Next to it were two rubber stamps.  One that said Approved, the other Rejected.  By tapping one or the other it would stamp the paper.  I loved it.  I kept stamping all of them with Reject, Reject, Reject.  I could do that all day.  What power!

Wednesday at SAP's TechEd 2010 - Enterprise Mobility

Wednesday was another long and interesting day at TechEd.  It started with a 7:00 a.m. breakfast with SAP's Premier Customer Network (largest worldwide customers) where Sybase's Sam Lakkundi and Senthil Krishnapillai briefed the attendees on the Sybase Unwired Platform.

For the first time, I saw a product roadmap slide in the presentation from Sybase.  Sybase has always been hesitant to share the product roadmap in the past.  I am not sure why.  SAP likes to say that 70 percent of the world's GNP runs through SAP systems.  With those numbers, it seems they have some responsibility to ensure reliable roadmaps are defined and published so the rest of their partner ecosystem and customer base can plan and design accordingly.  Sybase - thank you for showing us that roadmap slide!  Now if I can only get my hands on it.

Tuesday at SAP's TechEd 2010 - Focus on Enterprise Mobility

I am sure one could have found sessions and topics unrelated to SAP enterprise mobility at TechEd today, but I didn't.  My day was packed from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. with non-stop enterprise mobility.  Please follow me on Twitter @krbenedict if you are interested in hourly and daily updates on enterprise mobility news here at TechEd.  Here was my day:

  • Vishal Sikka spoke all about enterprise mobility during his 8:00 a.m. keynote.  Yes, you read that right, an 8:00 a.m. keynote.
  • I interviewed Willie Jow of Sybase today about all kinds of Sybase mobility related subjects.  I will be publishing his interview next week.
  • I interviewed Oliver Bussmann, SAP's CIO on enterprise mobility.  I posted the video interview here.
  • I interviewed Adobe's Matthias Zeller on Adobe's enterprise mobility work.  I posted the video interview here.
  • I lead an Expert Networking session on SAP enterprise mobility and spoke to many companies that are implementing mobile proof-of-concepts.  We had some fascinating discussing about real life experiences.  I will certainly blog on these discussions.
  • I spoke with Sybase's mobility guru, Senthil Krishnapillai.  We discussed the Sybase solution "mobile workflow" an under-appreciated, but powerful application.
  • I had a long discussion with fellow SAP Mentor John Appleby on his experiences with enterprise mobility in the UK.
  • I spoke at length about mobile strategy with Dr. Ahmend El Adl of PWC.
  • I spoke with Vivido Labs' mobility guru Steve Goldman and discussed his most recent mobility projects.
  • I am exhausted, but have two more meetings this evening.

Watch SAP CIO Oliver Bussman Interview at TechEd 2010

SAP CIO Oliver Bussman
I am excited to report that I will be conducting the SAP TechEd Live interview (see sample) with SAP CIO Oliver Bussman later this month at TechEd in Las Vegas.  Oliver Bussman is involved in all the major mobility projects that are rolled out within the SAP organization.  

 Oliver spoke about some of his recent mobility projects in this article:
  • SAP has rolled out almost 1,500 iPads for users across its business
  • The iPads were configured with email access, access to a virtual private network (VPN), Citrix software to enable access to server-based applications and business intelligence tools via BusinessObjects.
  • The company currently has 17,000 BlackBerrys rolled out across the organisation and Bussmann said that within 12 months, there will be as many iPads in use by SAP employees.
