What I Learned at SAP TechEd 2012 about Enterprise Mobility

I learned a lot at SAP's TechEd 2012 this week.  Here are some of my impressions and notes.  SAP, if I have any of this wrong please correct me!
  • SAP hired a new M2M leader that reports into Sanjay Poonen.
  • SAP's Vishal Sikka and Sanjay Poonen both spoke about the "Internet of Things", also known as M2M (machine to machine) communications.  This is a huge emerging technology trend.
  • Vishal Sikka hinted at the potential of using Hana on Ariba.  Very interesting!
  • Learned SAP's SuccessFactor has a mobile application
  • SAP Mobility Platform will be the brand for all mobile technologies.  The mobile middleware you ultimately choose under the SMP brand could be NetWeaver Gateway, Syclo's Agentry or SUP.  It will all be there and serve different purposes in the near term.  Long term there will be more convergence.
  • 50% of Syclo's customers were IBM Maximo customers (random I know)
  • Phase one of the Syclo and SMP (SAP Mobility Platform) convergence will happen Q1 and a roadmap has been defined for the rest
  • SAP is now fully embracing partner solutions for developing mobile apps (think ClickSoftware, Sencha, Appcelerator, Cordova, etc.)
  • SAP Box, a DropBox like solution, is being developed by SAP and secured with Afaria, is coming soon.
  • SuccessFactor's social networking platform JAM, will be the social and collaboration platform of choice from SAP - bye, bye StreamWorks.
  • SAP now has 18,000 iPads, 16,000 iPhones, 2,000 Androids and 4,000 BYOD supported mobile devices.  These are all secured and managed through Afaria.  Oliver Bussman and his team truly speaks from experience on issues related to mobility.
  • SAP's BYOD policy is bettered called BYODALAIIOOTT - Bring your own device as long as it is one of these ten...
  • Sanjay Poonen referenced that Afaria could scale up to support half a billion devices...
  • SAP's internal support of Android is still limited to Samsung devices.  SAP and Samsung have a special technology partnership that enables SAP to better secure Samsung Android devices
  • SAP is talking a lot about Afaria and SAP Mobility Platform in the cloud
  • Sanjay Poonen mentioned a home design app, that allows users to design their own home by choosing colors and other decorations.  The app data is aggregated and analyzed to predict the popularity of various items and colors by the retail stores and manufacturers.  Very cool example of integrating social networking tools with sales forecasting and SCM.
  • SAP has set-up internal "Apple Genius-like" bars in their offices to help employees with mobile devices and apps.
  • I heard a lot of excitement from many SAP people, and other CIOs about Windows 8.  There is a lot of pent-up demand and hope.
  • Developing a mobile strategy is still the big bottle neck at companies
  • Afaria was referenced as extending out to secure M2M devices
  • With new UI designs from Microsoft (think Metro) developers may want to design the same app with completely different UIs instead of just simple OS changes...hummm more work and components to manage
  • Heard a CIO say a rule of thumb is that each new mobile apps will require 1 FTE to maintain it
  • Heard of an effort inside SAP to connect their GRC (governance and risk?) to Afaria so mobile policies could be automatically enforced
Did you miss SAP TechEd 2012?  I have many video interviews of mobility expert that I met there!  More will be published next week.

SAP Enterprise Mobility and M2M in Your Company

Last week I spent some time with SAP's Sanjay Poonen discussing M2M (machine-to-machine) communications.  I came away from that discussion excited that SAP was focusing on this emerging market that I have found so fascinating. Most IT departments have been so focused on figuring out how to implement enterprise mobility and support communicating with people using smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices, that they have not yet thought about communicating with mobile and/or remote machines.

Here is an excerpt from the article I wrote last week about my discussions with SAP's Sanjay Poonen on the topic of M2M.  "Sanjay and I spent quite a bit of time talking about where mobile security is going, beyond MDM.  From MDM to Mobile App Management, to Secure Content Management, to eventually M2M (machine-to-machine) communications.  He talked about how this field will have a big impact in SAP’s plans.  In fact, Sanjay had just chaired a conference call with about 50 SAP internal people to brainstorm about M2M, and there is a great deal of excitement around SAP’s plans in this area."

Perhaps it is early, but not too early to begin pondering the strategic value of M2M in your company.  What machines, sensors, facilities, security systems, vehicles, plant equipment, supplies and materials would it be valuable for your ERP and other systems to automatically communicate with?  What automatic monitoring data would be useful for your operations?

Canal and irrigation management systems are regularly using M2M technology today in remote sensors to record and wirelessly transmit water levels, the statuses of gates and to adjust water levels.

Utility companies are one of the biggest users of M2M technologies.  Their assets (lines, substations, transformers, pipelines, storage tanks etc) are in remote locations and remote M2M sensors and wireless chips can monitor their statuses and report to a central location.

Fleet management systems also take advantage of M2M.  Vehicles report their location, speed, fuel usage, hours of operation, repair and maintenance needs all automatically using M2M.  This is machine's sending data automatically to other machines.

Vending machine companies today are widely using M2M technologies that enable their vending machines to automatically report inventory levels and other information from the kiosk or vending machine.  You can imagine the savings in efficiencies if the route driver knows in advance exactly what each vending machine needs, and when it needs it to maximize sales and productivity.

Manufacturing plants can be revolutionized by the use of M2M technologies.  Can you imagine having a central team managing plants around the world from one location that is receiving and processing M2M communications from all of the equipment in all the plants?  Wow!

Large companies can end up having massive amounts of M2M data flowing into the company.  The next challenge of course is what to do with it.  M2M data looks just like data coming in from a smartphone.  The data from a Yes or No answer on a smartphone app, looks just like M2M data reporting the gate is open in yard #3.  IT departments need to ensure the data is secure and accurate.  They need to monitor and track all of their M2M technologies and wireless embedded chips to ensure they are working properly and the data is good.  This data needs to be integrated with the right systems.  The systems need to understand what to do with it.

M2M communications can be the front-end data collection mechanisms for many systems. The automated inputs for all kinds of business processes.  Big Data technologies and business analytics to quickly interpret the meaning of all the data and to translate it into a form that can help managers make good real-time data driven decisions in the field.  These alerts and notifications can be sent to the mobile devices of managers no matter their locations for quick and immediate responses.

M2M systems can reuse many of the same mobile middleware, mobile device management, integration, provisioning and security components that are used for supporting enterprise mobility today.  The main challenge will be developing an enterprise-wide M2M strategy, and since this is also the big challenge with enterprise mobility, we may have to wait in line.

SAP Enterprise Mobility Update with Sanjay Poonen

Sanjay Poonen
I had the privilege of spending time on the phone last week with SAP's President and Corporate Officer, Sanjay Poonen.   He has responsibility for several of the innovation products at SAP, and also has overall responsibility for mobility.  I must take a moment to apologize again to Sanjay for being late to the call.  Let me digress for a moment, my iPhone and MacBook Pro have never processed calendar invites reliably.  They mess up the time zone conversions.  Am I the only one with this issue?  Apple has tried a dozen times to fix it, without luck.  OK, back to my call with Sanjay.

Sanjay updated me on the record Q2 sales numbers for all aspects of SAP’s innovations – Hana, Mobile and Cloud, and then we went into more details around all things mobile.  He also shared how Syclo's Founder Rich Padula, has joined his team, and is now going to be responsible for all SAP mobile apps, including Syclo.  This is a good move as Rich is a proven mobile industry veteran.  Also, Syclo's mobile solutions are now being fully integrated with SUP.  This effort is already under way, and is targeted to be completed by Q1, 2013.
Rich Padula

Sanjay explained that SAP mobility is now organized into four areas:
  • Mobile Security
  • Mobile Application Platform
  • Mobile Applications (B2E and B2C)
  • Messaging Infrastructure (Sybase 365)

He also shared that there is a Mobility rebranding effort going on now that is expected to be announced in Q4 of this year.  SAP will be simplifying and unifying all of their different mobility brands, to centralize around SAP as the main brand for Mobility, over Sybase, which had more of a database brand associated with it.

SAP continues to charge ahead aggressively with enterprise mobility.  Sanjay shared that they are heavily recruiting mobile expertise, with some very strong talent from competitors in the MDM and MEAP space coming over to SAP.  Over the next few weeks several well-known mobile industry veterans will be joining SAP.  One of them is former Gartner Analyst, Bill Clark.
On another topic - SAP is now investing significantly more resources into Afaria.  That is smart, because while SAP has garnered top ratings in the Mobile App Platform and Mobile Apps space, they have seemed to have fallen behind competitors in 2011, at least in mindshare. SAP has nearly tripled the development investment in Afaria this year, and has been winning some big deals that are replacing other MDM vendors.  Sanjay said that in Q2, SAP also did the largest deal in the history of the MDM industry, a high 7-figure dollar OEM deal with a large global hardware manufacturer.  He said that Afaria grew almost 500% YoY in Q2, and he is seeing a great deal of interest from customers that are seeking the scalability and dependability of SAP's solutions.

SAP has recently announced a new SAP Mobile Apps Partner program designed to give mobile app developers free access to the SAP Mobile Platform.  I am a strong believer in the concept of try-it-before-you-buy-it and this seems like a smart move to expand their developer base.  I think anything that can be done to remove friction from the system is a good idea.  Let the developer community have access to it, and let it stand on its own merits. Sanjay said the goals of the Mobile business, is to not just create a 1 billion Euro business by 2015, but to deliver a platform for tens of thousands of mobile apps to be built on, and get millions of developers successfully using their mobility platform.

Sanjay and I spent quite a bit of time talking about where mobile security is going, beyond MDM.  From MDM to Mobile App Management, to Secure Content Management, to eventually M2M (machine-to-machine) communications.  He talked about how this field will have a big impact in SAP’s plans.  In fact, Sanjay had just chaired a conference call with about 50 SAP internal people to brainstorm about M2M, and there is a great deal of excitement around SAP’s plans in this area.

M2M is basically wireless embedded chips that can be connected to remote sensors.  These sensors can then wirelessly message whatever data they are monitoring.  For example,  the engine of a bulldozer is started in the middle of the night.  The sensor on the bulldozer messages an alert to a security person to investigate.  Just about any machine or piece of equipment on a plant floor can message its status to a central server.  A dashboard on the M2M server can be used to monitor M2M equipped devices across a large geographic area.

M2M can play a part in many different SAP business processes.  M2M communications requires security, messaging platforms, integration, analytics and much more.  Industry analyst predict that by 2025 there will be over 50 billion connected devices in the world.  This Internet of Things can message their statuses to systems all around the world.  You can easily see how M2M will be an important component of many different processes and systems.  SAP fully recognizes this and is organizing their forces now, has some big plans being baked in Research and Development, and they are hiring some key people from within the industry to lead the M2M effort within the company.  Expect to hear a lot from SAP on how the Internet of Things, aka M2M, will progress, shortly.

I want to thank Sanjay for sharing his insights and updates with us.

What Kevin Benedict is Learning about Enterprise Mobility this Month

Opinions?  I want to
hear them!
Mobile technology is fun and interesting, but the real impact of mobile technology is when companies adapt and evolve their business strategies, models and business processes because of it.  I am doing a lot of research in this area now.  The real-time and mobile enterprise is a different animal.  Just like modern military strategies have completely changed based upon persistent surveillance, real-time field visibility, remote sensors, mobile resources, mobile assets, connected troops and unified communications, business strategies must also change.

It is not mobile device security that is important, but mobile app and data security.

I have met with over a dozen large companies in the past few weeks and all have many mobile projects that they are researching and considering.

The best "idea generators" and most creative people in a company are technology early adopters.  Companies should encourage them to use new technologies and reap the benefits in innovation.

SAP/Sybase is investing a lot of thought and resources into the concept of enterprise mobile app stores.  Their strategy, as I understand it, is to develop the frameworks and infrastructure that companies will need to manage, trust and secure hundreds of different mobile solutions from many different vendors.

Sybase still needs to learn more about supporting end user customers, rather than ISV partners.  They must limit their blanket marketing statements, and get specific with what they support today, and what they will support over time.  For example, don't say you support mobile devices that use the Microsoft OS, if you don't yet support Windows Phone 7 with Afaria.  This is important to the company that is ordering devices today.  Don't say you support Android OS, if you are supporting only a subset of Android with specific device manufacturers.  Again this is very important to the company ordering devices today.  Be specific about today's supported devices.  Provide specific guidance and details to the people purchasing devices.

I am seeing that it is extremely hard for a corporate IT organization to figure out an enterprise wide mobile middleware strategy.  There are so many decision points and variables that this discussion just sinks into the mire.  It is far easier to choose the best mobile app for a business process.  I think once there are enough mobile apps that use SUP, then the mobile middleware discussion and strategy will be far easier.

I am seeing third party mobility vendors turning away from the SAP mobile app market, because they don't have visibility into where there are opportunities to make money.  They hear SAP/Sybase talking about developing hundreds of mobility apps, so this market seems to be risky, shrinking and not worth their future investment.  Yet, I hear SAP/Sybase saying they need and want third party mobility vendors to develop mobile applications.  There is some work needed here on SAP/Sybase's part to give better guidance and incentives to third party mobility vendors.

Corporate IT is still struggling with developing a master plan for mobility.  As a result selling to the corporate IT organization is often slow and difficult, however, departments and business units are buying enterprise mobility solutions today for the line of business.

If an IT organization forbids mobile solutions, the IT organization will become irrelevant to the company as mobility is unavoidable.

The M2M (machine to machine) communications market is growing faster and faster.  The ability for smartphones and other computers to communicate with and operate remote machines is rapidly expanding.  For example New York City is working to wirelessly control and manipulate traffic signals.  The fastest growing market segments in M2M are medical equipment, healthcare apps and in-vehicle systems.

I am seeing and learning about more and more mobility vendors using a cloud computing model.  The line of business can quickly subscribe and use mobile apps from cloud computing vendors with minimal IT involvement.  This is how the line of business can avoid the glacieral decision making pace of corporate IT departments.

What have you learned about enterprise mobility this month?  I want to hear it!  Please add your comments!
