ClickSoftware Named Gartner MQ Leader

ClickSoftware, provides automated mobile workforce management and optimization solutions for the service industry.  This year it has been positioned as a Leader by Gartner, Inc. in their 2012 Magic Quadrant for Field Service Management report (download the report free here). Gartner did not position SAP in the Leader quadrant, even though SAP has both Syclo and resells much of ClickSoftware's solution as SAP’s Workforce Scheduling and Optimization.  If fact, ClickSoftware utilizes much of the SAP Mobility Platform in their solution.  What is the logic?  Take a look at what makes up a full Field Service Management solution:
  • demand forecasting
  • long-and-short term capacity planning
  • shift planning
  • real-time scheduling and optimization
  • enterprise mobility
  • business analytics
The service industry needs a lot of tools and automation.  It needs all kinds of back-end solutions and capabilities.  The real value of just about any mobile solution is the back-office or cloud based solution it is connected to.

According to Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Field Service Management ClickSoftware is well-positioned to take advantage of the four critical elements of the Nexus of Forces.  The Nexus of Forces is the convergence and mutual reinforcement of social, mobility, cloud and information patterns that drive new business scenarios.  At Cognizant we call these four SMAC (social, mobile, analytics and cloud) because it is great fun to “talk smac!”

It is easy to forget how important the ERP and the back-office solutions are to mobility.  An enterprise mobility app is only as good as the software in which it connects.

Mobile Business App Store? ClickSoftware Says Yes!

ClickSoftware, the developer of the SAP Workforce Scheduling and Optimization solution and the ClickMobile application, today announced a new patent pending ClickAppStore for mobile applications.  Here is their description:

The patentpending ClickAppStore includes hundreds of readytouse mobile business apps, and a unique integrated development environment (IDE) in which IT professionals can assemble business apps into enduser solutions using primarily nocoding ‘drag and drop’ wizards. ClickAppStore also offers tools to build user interfaces that are effectively device agnostic and enable its applications to run on just about any tablet or smartphone. Aimed at System Integrators, IT departments, ERP/CRM companies and product developers of vertical industry solutions to mobilize backoffice products, ClickAppStore also includes access to consulting, training, and outsourcing services.
What do you think?  Is this useful?

When I was the CEO of a mobile application company we always thought this was needed.  We had developed dozens of different applications for clients that were collecting dust on our shelves and we wanted to make them known and available to a wider community.  I like this concept and will be watching how they manage this process.  We all know that Apple's success was in large part due to their complete end-to-end solution including iTunes and the App store.  It will be interesting to watch if an enterprise mobility vendor can also be successful using a version of this model.

Gartner Awards Vivint with Enterprise Efficiency Award for Enterprise Mobility Solution

I read an interesting article today that documented significant efficiencies gained through field service automation, scheduling and the addition of an enterprise mobility solution.  The company is Vivint, a company that helps with residential home security and automated home management.  Here are some of the improvements they experienced with their solutions:
  • 33 percent engineer utilization improvement (one additional work order daily per technician)
  • 60 percent decrease in inbound call traffic to scheduling department
  • ROI of $20.13 per ticket
  • Total estimated ROI engineer utilization of $2,831,009.70
  • 32 percent increase in fuel efficiency (equal to 1.2 gallon decrease per average on work orders completed)
Gartner presented the Gold Level Gartner and 1‐to‐1 Media CRM Excellence Award to Vivint last week at the Gartner Customer 360 Summit in Los Angeles.  The criteria they were using to judge this award were:
  • Reducing operational and interaction costs
  • Improving sales
  • Improving service
  • Improving marketing
  • Improving customer service
  • Improving customer value - such as revenue growth, wallet share, products per person and frequency of purchase
Vivint created a real‐time mobile enterprise, that links every stakeholder in the service chain.  They created this real-time enterprise using an automated scheduling and dispatch solution, enterprise mobility and customer interaction management solutions to give its team of dispatchers and 400 field service technicians real‐time information and dynamic routing ability. As a result, technicians are able to field nearly 50 percent more service calls every day while customers consistently report outstanding service quality and responsiveness.

The solutions used were from ClickSoftware, an SAP mobility partner, the developer of the SAP Workforce Optimization and Scheduling solution.

SAP, Pacific Gas and Electric and ClickSoftware

SAP Workforce Scheduling
 and Optimization
I have been reading recently about how the U.S. military is consolidating data centers around the world.  They want to reduce costs, but also have quicker and faster access to data in a unified view.  This morning I read with interest a case study on how Pacific Gas and Electric had similar goals and ambitions and what they did to accomplish them.

In the past PG&E coordinated crew schedules within the SAP project management application, and had dispatcher teams at each of their 67 local PG&E offices.  However, to improve on the efficiency of the scheduling, PG&E decided to consolidate the dispatching teams to work out of two regional remote management centers in Concord and Fresno, California.

Facebook, Mobility and Field Services Applications

I have been watching with keen interest the convergence of social networking and enterprise mobility.  Recently, SAP mobility partner, ClickSoftware announced a social media extension to their SAP Workforce Scheduling and Optimization solution that is very interesting and worth highlighting.

Customers can book and change service appointments directly on a service organization’s Facebook page.  Customers can receive reminders and notifications on the expected arrival time of the field service engineer to minimize wait times.  With this extension, Facebook becomes yet another interaction channel for ClickContact, which can also integrate two-way communication with company web pages, automated voice calls, e-mail and SMS. Customers may select their preferred channels of communication at any time.

Right now, Facebook does not support this application extension on the Facebook mobile application, but this is expected in the near future. So today the customer accesses Facebook from their browser and books or reschedules their appointment.  How does this relate to mobility?  Customers can configure the Facebook application to send notifications to their smartphones via email, voice message, Facebook notification or text.

SAP Mentor John Appleby on SAP Enterprise Mobility Plus News and Thoughts

Fellow SAP Mentor John Appleby published a terrific and well thought out article summarizing his views on the current state of SAP enterprise mobility.  He works as a technical consultant in the UK for Bluefin Solutions Ltd., so has a much more technical view than I can provide.  I recommend reading it.

I do have a question that has been in the back of my mind this week.  If mobility is so important to SAP, where were all their mobility executives at SAP TechEd?  Where was John Chen, Bob Stutz, Kevin Nix, etc, which are the folks responsible for SAP enterprise mobility?  There were over 5,000 attendees.  My session on the Future of Enterprise Mobility had over 200 registrants.  It seems in hindsight, that SAP should have brought the big boys of mobility to the show.

Saving Billions with the Help of Enterprise Mobility Solutions, Part 1

I worked on a mobility project a few years ago with a very large construction and engineering firm that did contract work for water and electrical utilities in the UK.  They came to me with a need to survey and inspect council houses.  Council housing is a form of public or social housing in the United Kingdom. Council houses are built and operated by local councils to provide uncrowded, well built homes on secure tenancies at below market rents to primarily working class individuals.

The contractor asked me to provide consulting on how to mobilize up to 3,000 inspectors all around the UK to go to council houses and inspect them for ways to conserve both energy and water.  The number 3,000 had a magical ring to it so I agreed.
I flew to Newcastle where I met with the team and found out their real motivation for wanting to inspect the houses and mobilize their inspectors.  Their real motivation was a desire to save billions in Sterling!  If they could inspect the houses, recommend ways to reduce water consumption by 10, 20 or 30 percent, then they could delay the need to build new water reservoirs which could take years and cost billions.

I like mobile ROIs with the word billions attached!

The SAP Workforce Scheduling and Service Optimization solution is one of the solutions available that is designed for managing work in the field on mobile devices.

Extending Mobile Business Processes in Boise

A friend of mine here in Boise, Jon Young developed a very interesting mobile application on Android.  The application is a great example of the concept of extending business processes.

The application works much like the popular RedLaser iPhone application in that it can scan an ISBN barcode on a book cover and then automatically look it up.  The special part of the application is that it looks up the book in the local library system.  It will show the book's status and allow you to reserve the book if available.  You can read more about it on Jon's blog.

Think about this - you see a book that looks really interesting in a bookstore.  You can use Redlaser to look up the price at other locations or use Jon's mobile application to look it up in the Boise Library System, check the status, and reserve it.

The Boise Library System also delivers the book free to the local library location of your choice and emails you when the book arrives.  This entire process can be completed on your mobile device.

This is a simple example of a very useful business process that was extended to mobile devices.  On Thursday, August 19, SAP and Sybase will hold a press conference to discuss their mobile enterprise strategies.  I will be listening in particular to how they will be extending ERP business processes out to mobile devices.

The SAP Workforce Scheduling and Optimization application by Clicksoftware is a great example of extending business processes out to the mobile workforce.  Here is how SAP describes it - it  helps your service organization run at optimal efficiency: from demand forecasting and workforce shift planning to real-time optimized scheduling, mobile workforce management, and business analytics. The solution helps ensure that your service organization meets objectives and commitments smoothly and efficiently.

How Do You Advise an Enterprise on Mobility?

I was asked the other day to put together a list of questions to send to a management team in advance of my visit.  They had asked me to help them develop an enterprise mobility strategy.

This was an interesting task.  I had little knowledge of the scope of their ambitions, so I approached this challenge by creating a list of open ended questions that were designed to uncover their interests and their range of possible needs.  How would you prepare to discuss an infinite number of different mobility scenarios, business processes, IT infrastructures, ERPs and a plethora of mobile devices?   Were they going to describe a simple iPhone application or a solution as powerful as the SAP Workforce Scheduling And Optimization by Clicksoftware solution?

I think this is one of those tasks that benefits from trial and error.  Here is the list of 14 questions I prepared in advance.  What questions would you add to this list, or ask differently?
  1. What business processes are you considering mobilizing?
  2. What business units or departments are involved?  Is this a corporate project or departmental?
  3. What are your priorities for mobilizing business processes?  Which ones first, second, third?
  4. How many people will be using these mobile applications?
  5. What are the roles and responsibilities of the mobile users?
  6. What are the expected ROIs?
  7. What is the desired timeline?
  8. Do you have business process diagrams developed for these solutions?  If so, can we review prior to our meeting?
  9. What is your one to three year roadmap for enterprise mobility?
  10. What backend applications or ERPs are involved?
  11. What are your preferred integration strategies?
  12. Do you have existing mobile enterprise solutions?  If so, please describe.
  13. What are your mobile device or smartphone preferences?
  14. Do you want to buy an off the shelf mobile solution, develop one in-house, or contract for a custom mobile solution?
I look forward to your thoughts on how to improve this list.

29 Areas to Find an ROI by Mobilizing Field Services

In this article we take a more indepth look at ROIs that can be achieved by mobilizing and automating field services.  We start out by reviewing some of the ROI points we discussed in an earlier article and then adding to the list.

It is important to recognize that ROIs don't just come from cost savings.  Upselling products and services can bring in new revenue.  Providing better customer service can leave a lasting impression that results in more business and referrals.  Automating and mobilizing business analytics and queries can provide new insights and more business opportunties for the field sales and field services teams.  Integrating work order dispatch with enterprise asset management and location based technologies can ensure that you optimize the use of a field service technician's time while onsite with a customer.

Here are 29 areas where you can look for ROIs.

1. Eliminate time spent in the office re-typing data collected in the field by enabling field service technicians to synchronize information directly with the office database.

2. Eliminate time spent on the phone dispatching service tickets or work orders. This saves time for both the dispatcher and the service technician.  Dispatch electronic service tickets directly from your work order management system in the office with the mobile device of your service technician.

3. Save time finding each work location.  Send driving directions or links in the electronic work order that work with the GPS and mapping software in the mobile device.

4. Avoid the high fuel costs incurred by delivering paperwork to the office.  Synchronize the data directly from the field to the central database application.

5. Avoid the time and cost of transporting paperwork from the field to the office.  Synchronize the data collected from the field with the push of a button.

6. Save time and provide better customer service by providing real-time access to enterprise parts, orders, and inventory data while in the field.  Enable mobile access to customer history, product documentation, warranty information, inventory information, timesheets, work schedules and much more.

7. Save time with field data collection by using barcode scanners and barcode labels, or RFID readers and RFID tags on assets.  A quick scan with a handheld computer can automatically display all stored information related to the asset for quick review, edits and additions.

8. Save time and reduce administration costs by creating and scheduling new service tickets directly from the field.

9. Provide immediate invoicing for faster collections and better cash management.  Allow the field technician to print the invoice on a mobile printer at the job site.

10. Save time and postage costs.  Print the invoice and leave it with the customer at the job site rather than waiting and billing later from the office.

11. Document proof of work completed to reduce invoice disputes.  Leave a GPS audit trail showing where the work was performed and include a time and date stamp. Digital photo evidence of before and after work is also useful.

12. Reduce the introduction of errors.  Paper based systems are inherently slow and error prone due to human interaction, copying and re-typing. The more human hands that touch a paper form and add or edit data, the more chances that errors can be introduced to the data which can cause invoice disputes, inaccurate records and confusion.

13. Reduce administrative costs by ensuring complete data is sent from the field, as incomplete or inaccurate field data can take hours of work to track down and correct.  Send data from the field and ensure it is complete with data integrity features on the mobile device.

14. Reduce administrative costs by avoiding errors and misinterpretations due to poor or misread handwriting.  Create electronic forms with pre-made options, check boxes and lists, and by using smartphone keypads.

15. Reduce administrative costs by ensuring the accuracy of data.  Validate answers in the mobile software application.

16. Reduce time on the phone and dangerous note taking while driving.  Push documents directly from the office to the mobile device.

17. Save time and fuel by providing electronic dispatch and least cost routing.  Use vehicle and/or handheld GPS tracking to view your workforce locations. Smartphones with GPS functionality can integrate with GIS and display the location of the field worker to help managers better organize service responses.

18. Save time by developing computation and analysis features on the mobile device in the field.  Programmed analytics can help field users make quicker and more accurate decisions and job estimates.

19. Save time in the field by automating business processes in the mobile software.  Mobile application can be configured to perform all kinds of automated business functions, queries, computations and analytics.

20. Enforce quality work habits.  Automate “best practices” into your mobile software application and provide visibility to managers.

21. Automate quality and best practices.  Activate the appropriate business process based upon the data entered.  A specific answer can trigger the required business process.

22. Reduce inventory loss.  Avoid undocumented inventory usage and unbilled time.  Enforce real time data entry before clock out or work order completion.

23. Improve job estimates.  Require clock in and clock out on work to document and analyze the accuracy of work estimates and improve over time.

24. Improve technician training.  Train new service technicians and inspectors with audio memos or video clips embedded in the mobile application or linked to a URL.

25. Reduce disputes by documenting deliveries and work with digital signatures, date and time stamps and barcode scanners on the mobile device.

26. Save travel time and fuel cost.  Query available inventory in nearby company vehicles.

27. Increase profit per customer.  Use information on mobile devices to up-sell more products and services while onsite with the customer.

28. Provide quicker and more accurate estimates.  Query latest shipping status, schedules or inventory levels via mobile devices while onsite with customers.

29. Increase warranty revenues.  Include updated customer information on the mobile device so the service technician can sell warranty and maintenance plans, new products and upgrades.

If you are involved in the world of SAP, you may want to review SAP's solution for field services automation called the SAP® Workforce Scheduling and Optimization application by ClickSoftware

This list is far from complete.  What additions should I make to the list?  I look forward to hearing from you!
