Mobile Expert Video Series: ETSA Utility's Grant Roach

In this video I interview field mobility veteran Grant Roach from the South Australian electricity distributor ETSA.  They started their first mobility projects in the 1990s and have continued to evolve it.  They are now adding ClickMobile to their ClickSchedule solution.  He also has a lot of experience with change management in the field services space.

    Mobile Expert Video Series: Telstra's Warren Wipiti

    Last week in Australia I was able to listen in on a presentation about field services automation, scheduling and mobilizing field workers by Telstra.  They use Panasonic Toughbooks, WiFi enabled vehicles and ClickSoftware's ClickSchedule to organize and dispatch their field services teams.

    In this video Warren shares that Telstra has gone from being just a utility provider, to now being a service provider in a deregulated and competitive environment where superior quality and customer service is a competitive advantage. 

    Telstra has done something that is very hard.  They reduced their field services staff by 50%, yet improved their quality and customer service.  Listen to this video to find out how.

    Mastering SAP Technologies and Mobility in Australia

    Geeks/SAP Mentors Migrating South
    About ten SAP Mentors spoke at this year's Mastering SAP Technologies event in Sydney.  I presented one of the opening keynote presentations on Monday, and lead a session called Network Centric Operations in the SAP Environment this afternoon. 

    It was a packed house, but there was a noted absence of any Sybase folks.  I met several companies currently interested in purchasing mobile solutions.  The strange thing is that Sybase has a sales office in Sydney, but still did not attend.  It seems there are still some coordination issues to work out.

    There were 4 sessions that focused on enterprise mobility this year, and the Demo Jam winner was also a mobile solution.  The Demo Jam winners had the following components and features:
    • Remote controlled helicopter
    • Barcode scanner on the helicopter
    • Wireless remote control of the helicopter using an Android device
    • The barcode was capture and wirelessly integrated with SAP's SCM (supply chain management) system.
    I attended a session today by Jason Lante from ETSA Utilities on mobile timesheets.  He shared how ETSA Utilities is successfully using ClickSoftware's ClickMobile and ClickSchedule integrated with SAP for about 75% of their employees that work in the field.  They have achieved their mobility and ROI goals and are looking to expand.

    I had a gathering of utility, post and CPG company representatives around me following both presentations that I gave.  I kept looking around for some SAP utilities or Sybase folks to bring into these conversations, but none were present.  I don't think the SAP field sales team quite knows how important mobility is becoming to their customers.

    Unified View of Mobile Field Operations

    I read an article recently about how SAP's customer PG&E once had 67 different local offices dispatching field services crews.  These 67 offices managed 1,500 crews that consisted of approximately 5,000 specialists taking care of 50 million customers.  Each of these local offices only managed and had visibility to their own region's work and crew schedules.  As a result, some regions were very busy, some not.  This resulted in high administrative costs in the 67 offices, and an inefficient use of the field services crews.

    PG&E ultimately consolidated all of their dispatching and field services management into two centers and standardized on a central scheduling solution.  This resulted in a unified view of the workforce's schedule. 

    Today, the central dispatchers at PG&E have the visibility and management flexibility to schedule or reschedule work and crews to where they are most needed across regions.  This solution consisted of ClickSoftware's ServiceOptimization Suite of tools including ClickSchedule, ClickPlan, ClickAnalyze and ClickForecast integrated with SAP’s work order application.

    PG&E is a great example of the implementation of a concept called "Network Centric Operations."  The ability to have a unified real-time view of all of your assets, work/missions, schedules and resources so that you can manage them to most efficiently accomplish the mission. 

    I have been studying with keen interest recently how the military is incorporating these kinds of strategies to do more with less.  I believe this goal is equally important in the commercial sector.

    SAP, Pacific Gas and Electric and ClickSoftware

     and Optimization
    I have been reading recently about how the U.S. military is consolidating data centers around the world.  They want to reduce costs, but also have quicker and faster access to data in a unified view.  This morning I read with interest a case study on how Pacific Gas and Electric had similar goals and ambitions and what they did to accomplish them.
     
    In the past PG&E coordinated crew schedules within the SAP project management application, and had dispatcher teams at each of their 67 local PG&E offices.  However, to improve on the efficiency of the scheduling, PG&E decided to consolidate the dispatching teams to work out of two regional remote management centers in Concord and Fresno, California.

    Apple Stores and Motorola No More

    In December of 2007 I wrote a blog article questioning why Apple was using the Motorola MC50 handheld computers and Microsoft Mobile operating systems in their stores rather than their own devices and operating systems.  Every time I popped into an Apple store for the next couple of years I would see the same thing.  However, last month I noted that all the Apple sales associates were carrying the Apple iTouch with a sleeve that appeared to have an integrated barcode reader.

    I interpreted this development to be a measure of progress that Apple has made toward supporting enterprise requirements.  Early on, Apple would not use their own solutions for enterprise class POS and retail applications but now in 2010 they do.

    The iTouch was using an integrated barcode reader which is a good step toward field data collection.  It seems reasonable to assume it could also integrate with RFID and any number of additional Bluetooth enabled data capture accessories.

    I wonder if there would be a large enough market for a ruggedized iPhone?  It would not work well with field workers that wear gloves, but for many service technicians working primarily indoors it might be fine.  There are a lot of service technicians from companies like Konica Minolta that work indoors and are implementing mobile field services solutions. 

    Here is a description of the Konica Minolta solution.  Jobs are raised in the SAP system, and this information is automatically passed to ClickSchedule via the existing interface. ClickSchedule (from an SAP mobility partner) then allocates the most suitable individual to fix or service the product based upon the engineers' skill sets, location and availability. This information is then seamlessly passed to the field engineer via rugged mobile devices which the engineers use again to update progress.

    Wouldn't it be interesting if Apple developed a ruggedized and industrial grade device running iOS for this segment of the market?  Would this work or do you see more limitations with the iOS that would prevent this from being a reasonable alternative?
