Gartner's Latest Thoughts on Enterprise Mobility and SMAC

ClickConnect Europe 2013
I had the good fortune to attend a session this morning at ClickSoftware's ClickConnect Europe 2013 with Gartner's Research Director Dr. Richard M. Marshall.  Here are some of the notes I took from the session:

  • By 2017 Microsoft will sell as many mobile operating systems as Apple.  This is a bold prediction, but Gartner insists their projections are on track.
  • Enterprise collaboration tools will be the source of "huge" productivity gains.
  • By 2017 82% of handsets shipped will be smartphones
  • Mobile security, mobile device management and mobile app management are only going to get more complex.  Recognize how each additional app adds to the complexity and develop a strategy now that will keep the TOC manageable.  No wonder the MDM (mobile device management), MAM (mobile application management) and EMMP (enterprise mobile management platform) vendors are getting all the investor attention this year.
  • The Internet of Things (IoT) is a big deal.  Smartphones will be the end-points of choice for the connected device data.  Smartphones will enable you to view the meaning of connected device data and to act on it.
  • Gartner is using a new phrase at this conference - The Nexus of Disruptive Forces (social, mobile, information and cloud).  They added the term "disruptive" for added emphasis.  I agree.
  • The more people that work virtually or are remote and mobile, the more important it is to have social bonding between employees through collaboration tools.
  • Gartner is also talking about different technology layers in an IT environment moving at different "paces" of change.  The system of record may have a very slow pace of change, but the top "Innovation" layer may evolve and change at a very fast pace.  This "Innovation" layer is well suited for mobile solutions and cloud based apps.  Having different paces, however, requires each layer to be abstracted from the other to permit different paces of change.  This is a good way to think about technology stacks and how to design and develop your IT infrastructure.

What I am Learning about Mobility at ClickConnect 2012

I had the good fortune of spending time with Aberdeen Group's Director of Research for Service Management, Sumair Dutta yesterday at ClickSoftware's ClickConnect 2012 event.  He shared a couple of interesting points with me.
  1. The biggest ROI available for most field services organizations is the "First Time Fix" goal.  This is when the service technician can fix the problem the "first" time on the job.  There is so much time wasted going out to a job, evaluating it, ordering parts and rescheduling to come back at a later date.  The expense doubles when you can't fix it the first time.  Think about the wasted time, fuel, lost opportunity costs and poor customer service.
How does mobility fix this?  It doesn't unless you connect the right back-end systems together.  You want to be able to see the customer's history.  You want to understand the equipment that needs to be repaired.  You want to have the right tools, certifications and parts with you.  All of these things require integrating back-end systems with your mobile application.  When this is accomplished, you can get it right the first time.

Sumair also shared some of the latest research from Aberdeen Group.  Did you know:
  • Only 64% of large companies have mobilized their field services organizations?
  • Only 59% of medium companies have mobilized their field services organizations?
  • Only 44% of small companies have mobilized their field services organizations?
I predict that many of the large companies that have already mobilized, will be looking for a refresh of both hardware and software in the next 36 months.  The market is wide open and the vision of what is possible is far greater than ever before.

Enterprise Mobility and ClickConnect 2012 - San Diego

Rancho Bernardo Inn
I was just reviewing my upcoming itineraries and read through the details of ClickConnect 2012.  ClickConnect 2012 is ClickSoftware's annual conference.  This year the North American ClickConnect is being held in warm and beautiful Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego, September 10th-12th.

I noted that this year the conference is being sponsored by SAP, Accenture and others.  SAP and ClickSoftware are close partners, and SAP resells some of ClickSoftware's solutions as SAP Workforce Scheduling and Optimization.  Scheduling, forecasting and workforce optimization are some of the areas where mobility can have the greatest impact and even revolutionize how service companies operate.  I will be leading two sessions on mobile strategies and the latest trends in enterprise mobility at this event.

If you are interested in attending, you can contact them about it here - http://www.clicksoftware.com/clickconnect-na-2012-registration.htm.

More on Change Management and Enterprise Mobility

I had the opportunity to spend time with teams from two large utilities last evening at the ClickConnect APAC 2011 conference in Australia.  I was impressed by three specific discussion points:
    1. Change management challenges
    2. M2M
    3. Network connectivity issues
First, both utilities said the human factor in change management is a big problem for them.  Both organizations have an aging workforce that does not like change.  They shared that this workforce often has many inefficient and bad habits that they are not interested in changing.  When new apprentices are added to a team, it takes only six months for the old timers to teach the new apprentices the same bad habits.  What is to be done?

The positive note is that the young apprentices don't fear technology.  They have grown up with mobile phones, text messaging, email and social networking.  They are willing to embrace the use of these technologies in the workplace.  There is hope!

M2M (machine to machine) communications is being used extensively by the gas distribution company I met last night.  They have a broad range of different remote M2M sensors on their pipelines that wirelessly send data back to a central server.  Although these M2M devices are widely deployed, the challenge is still around how best to use the data from these remote sensors.  There is still a lot of work to be done that will turn this data into actionable intelligence.

It takes only one minute of discussion with a utility company in Australia to understand how necessary it is to have mobile applications that can run offline and online.  It only takes a short drive away from a main road to lose mobile phone connectivity in the outback.  Satellite phones and specialized radios are normal equipment for these IT organizations.  The IT assumption is that there will always be limited connectivity.  All mission critical mobile applications must work with this assumption.

Last week in Europe, I heard the same kind of requirements for offline and online mobile applications.  Several of the companies I was meeting with had a significant presence in Africa and South America.  Mobile application connectivity cannot be assumed.

I think back to a discussion I had with a member of the Sybase team in the UK earlier this year.  He shared that there were three locations between his office and his home where he could not get connectivity on his mobile phone.  I think we all need to remember these issues and not assume global connectivity when we are thinking through mission critical mobile application designs and architectures.

What does a mobile application that can run offline or online look like?  It will have the capability to store data in the mobile application on the mobile device that can be synchronized, at a later time when there is connectivity, to a back office database.  This kind of application requires a comprehensive mobile middleware solution that includes synchronization technology, on device data storage and backend integration capabilities.

Report from Last Week's ClickConnect North America 2010 on Enterprise Mobility

I had the opportunity to attend ClickSoftware's user conference for a couple of days last week in Scottsdale, Arizona.  It was at the Royal Palm, a beautiful resort located in an orange grove.  I was able to meet with many large utility customers and large field services organizations and spend some quality time with Shawn McEwan from Sybase and interview many of the executives from ClickSoftware.

Sybase an SAP company, was attending in support of their recently announced partnership with ClickSoftware who is utilizing the Sybase Mobility Platform in their solutions.  Terry Stepien, president, Sybase iAnywhere attended and spoke at the conference.  Here are some of his comments on the partnership, “By implementing ClickSoftware’s mobile applications on components of the Sybase mobility platform, the service industry benefits from an integrated offering from two industry leaders; proven mobility infrastructure from Sybase and proven mobile applications from ClickSoftware.  This partnership will transform ClickSoftware’s customers through highly productive enterprise mobility solutions. We look forward to growing this partnership into 2011 and beyond.”
