Sitting On the Plane Talking about Enterprise Mobility

If you have the chance, avoid sitting next to me on a plane. I like to talk, and I particularly like to talk about enterprise mobility.  Last night an unfortunate Accenture consultant sat down next to me. He was on a call with his project team that was working on a large BI (business intelligence) project.  I got so excited just listening to the acronyms roll off of his tongue.  I could hardly wait for him to hang-up the phone so I could jump in and talk with him in the brief seconds before he could pull out his Bose sound canceling headset.  I succeeded.

He shared his background, 15 years working for Accenture, focused on BI in the Fortune 100, travels every week.  I told him my background and shared my enthusiasm for enterprise mobility and mobile strategies.  He turned and looked at me, and said as only a geek could do, "I hate mobility."

He went on to say he is constantly asked to give presentations on mobile BI.  The problem is, they never buy his solutions.  This puzzled me.  Why would Fortune 100 companies have so much interest in mobile BI, but never close a deal with Accenture?  What do you think?

In my recent 2012 Mid-Year Enterprise Mobility Survey, the survey respondents said they expected to get ROIs from improved decision due to receiving real-time data and reports.  In my previous 2011 survey, real-time BI reporting also was ranked a top three in priority.  So we can see that companies believe it is very important.

The priorities were ranked from 1 to 10.  One is the top priority.
In the case of the Accenture consultant, however, his clients express a keen interest without buying.  He then went on to ask me, "Companies don't really buy mobility do they?"  I hesitated.  Then answered, "Of course they do.  They are buying at record levels from nearly all mobility vendors that I interview."

I have some opinions, but I would like to hear from you.  Why would Fortune 100 companies be keen to learn, but not buy mobile BI from the unfortunate consultant that was seated beside me on the plane?

Enterprise Mobility and ClickConnect 2012 - San Diego

Rancho Bernardo Inn
I was just reviewing my upcoming itineraries and read through the details of ClickConnect 2012.  ClickConnect 2012 is ClickSoftware's annual conference.  This year the North American ClickConnect is being held in warm and beautiful Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego, September 10th-12th.

I noted that this year the conference is being sponsored by SAP, Accenture and others.  SAP and ClickSoftware are close partners, and SAP resells some of ClickSoftware's solutions as SAP Workforce Scheduling and Optimization.  Scheduling, forecasting and workforce optimization are some of the areas where mobility can have the greatest impact and even revolutionize how service companies operate.  I will be leading two sessions on mobile strategies and the latest trends in enterprise mobility at this event.

If you are interested in attending, you can contact them about it here - http://www.clicksoftware.com/clickconnect-na-2012-registration.htm.

Reporting from Tokyo on Enterprise Mobility

View from SAP's
Tokyo Office
This week I am in both Tokyo and in Singapore leading workshops on enterprise mobility.  K2 Partnering organized these workshops to help educate companies on mobility.  On Monday we conducted a workshop to a full house in the Century Court Marunouchi, which is the building General McArthur used during the rebuilding and reconstruction years following WWII.  It is located directly across the street from the Imperial Palace grounds.

It seems that in Japan mobility is very advanced at the consumer level, but not so much in the enterprise.  I met with folks from Danone (yogurt-CPG), Gap (retail), Fujifilm, Novartis, Accenture, SAP, Cognizant and many others during this event.

Yesterday afternoon I had the privilege of meeting with the SAP Telecom business unit for APJ and the enterprise mobility folks in their downtown Tokyo office.  What an amazing view and great teams!  They are seeing a huge demand for enterprise mobility across Asia and are very actively recruiting more people to join the SAP team to focus on mobility.

Side note #1 - I asked the team from K2 Partnering yesterday what they typically eat for lunch in Tokyo - the answer was Korean food.  That struck me as funny.

Side note #2 - I had delicious noodle soup after a  morning run yesterday.  I found a tiny noodle shop in the middle of the gigantic Tokyo fish market.  I saw massive Tuna being carted around to be cut into fresh sushi.

Side note #3 - the heated toilet seats are an interesting touch.

Today, another enterprise mobility workshop before heading to the airport and Singapore.

Mobile Expert Video Series: Accenture's Brandon Webber

At SAPPHIRENOW 2011, SAP and Accenture announced a partnership to develop and support mobility applications focused on three verticals: oil and gas, utilities and consumer products.  I met up with Accenture's Brandon Webber last week and was able to record this interview with him about this announcement and more.

One of the most interesting segments of this interview is that Accenture believes their primary opportunity is not so much in developing individual mobility apps, but rather in delivering enterprise strategy, mobility platforms, integration and mobile device and data management.
