Managing a Mobile and Network Centric Operation, Part 2

This article is Part 2 in this series, read Part 1 here.

In the first segment of this series, we introduced some key concepts in a network centric operational strategy.  In Part 2 we will explore these concepts in greater depth, add some context, and introduce some additional requirements and considerations for you to ponder.  Let’s now review and expand on a few of the key concepts:
  1. Network Centric Operational data needs to be shared in real time.  In a mobile world that means real time communications with the mobile workforce.
  2. Network Centric Operations strategies are based on the concept of a dynamic, and shared information environment that provides access to trusted information for all users, based on need, independent of time and place.  This description highlights the idea that the actual use of the data is not known in advance by the managers of the shared information environment.  The approved consumers of this information will creatively utilize this content in their own applications and systems to best execute their individual missions.  This concept supports an agile and unpredictable environment without causing unnecessary and artificial barriers that limit effectiveness and deployment in the field by setting up standards and integration methodologies.
  3. Network Centric Operations are designed to use data that can be collected and processed in real time from thousands of different data collection sources - human, computer and machine. Examples are humans, mobile devices, satellites, web services connected to other data collection sources, GPS vehicle and cargo tracking systems, EDI, barcode scanners, RFID readers, Bluetooth anything, remote M2M wireless sensors, faxes, emails, SMS, physical mail, customers and partners.  This data needs to be translated into standardized formats (data syntax and semantics) so consumers understand what it is and what it means.
  4. Network Centric Operations can easily bury a consumer in irrelevant and unnecessary data. Humans can easily be distracted and overwhelmed with large quantities of data.  Having the right, real time intelligence and analytical systems in place to assist the human consumer is critical. Systems that can offer highly accurate predictions, identify patterns, suggest actions and augment reality in real time, in the right place, at the right time, to the right person, on the right device and in the right amount are the goals.
As you can quickly see from just these four network centric operational concepts, it is not just about moving data from point A to point B, or from an ERP to a smartphone.  Building and supporting this “network” requires all of the talent and skills that have made traditional ERP and IT systems irreplaceable for companies today.

Enterprise Mobility Exchange - Brussels

I have the honor of being able to chair the Enterprise Mobility Exchange conference this week in Brussels.  I took this photo last evening from my hotel window.  I have stayed in worse places.

Here are some of the speakers that I look forward to hearing this week:
  • Glenn Morgan, Head of Service Transformation, British Airways
  • Divya Mahajan, Director Architect for Enterprise Integration and SOA, Philips International
  • Simon Skeet, Retail and Logistics Manager - Groceries Online, Sainsbury's Supermarkets
  • Nick Capell, CIO/IT Director, Parcelforce Worldwide
  • Jan Kampfer, European Product Marketing Manager, Panasonic Toughbook
  • Nicholas McQuire, Research Director, Enterprise Mobility EMEA, IDC Research
I interview a lot of brilliant enterprise mobility experts that work for vendors, but this event is mostly end users sharing their real world experiences.  I expect it to be very interesting.

There are over 40 sponsors here, but some we discuss regularly are SAP, Syclo, ClickSoftware, Sky Technologies, Newelo, Motorola, Panasonic Toughbook, Intermec, Soti, etc.

It is interesting to note that Sybase is not here.  I spoke to an unnamed Sybase person who said they are traditionally at this event, but there is a bit of confusion as to when Sybase should appear, and when SAP should appear at these events right now.  I image this will be worked out soon.

I will be blogging from Brussels this week.

You can follow this event on Twitter at #emeeu.

Managing a Mobile and Network Centric Operation, Part 1

I have been writing about the Network Centric Operations approach to mobile field services for the past couple of years and plan to continue with even more enthusiasm. The mobile devices, mobile platforms, communication networks and integration frameworks exists today to revolutionize field services and the way companies interact with their mobile workforce in general. Today, few enterprise mobility vendors yet understand network centric operations.

In a way, I think ERP vendors may end up understanding the concept of network centric operations better than most enterprise mobility vendors. Why? Because ERP vendors are familiar with and accustomed to thinking about how all systems interact and work together, while many enterprise mobility vendors are still celebrating their ability to communicate point to point on a mobile device.

Social networking and social media technologies like Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter have taught us the value of social and business networks. Twitter has even shown us how to launch political revolutions and change governments. Likewise, network centric operational concepts have the potential to change everything about managing the mobile workforce.

Let’s first explore some definitions of Network Centric Operations. Network centric operations is an information based operation that uses information processing, networks, and data to provide the capability to perform assigned operational roles in fast changing environments with an increasing use of system provided intelligence and cognitive processes. Wow! That is good!  Did you catch the “system provided intelligence and cognitive processes” part? That shines the spotlight on mobile and real time business intelligence provided to the right people, at the right time, at the right place, and in the right amount.

Another point - the data needs to be collected and shared in real time. In a mobile world that means real time communications and data exchanges with the mobile workforce.  Data can be collected outside the enterprise by the mobile workforce, EDI/B2B, through third party web services or through M2M (machine to machine) networks.

Here is more on the concept of network centric operations - it is based on the concept of a dynamic, and shared information environment that provides access to trusted information for all users, based on need, independent of time and place. It enables application developers and program managers to move forward without unnecessary organizational barriers limiting access to real time data. It involves and requires system interoperability and enterprise management.

Let me point out the concept above of “shared information environment.” It is a stream of real time information and intelligence that any approved system or application can access and utilize. The data gatekeepers are removed so the information can be acted upon in real time.

What is the purpose of network centric operations and how does it benefit an enterprise? The enterprise becomes a part of a continuously-evolving, complex community of people, devices, information and services that are interconnected by a communications network to achieve optimal effectiveness with limited resources(force multiplier) and better coordination between network participants. In other words real time and real world enterprise management.

At a Glance - Enterprise Mobility Solutions

I interviewed EVP and GM, Mark Watson, of Antenna Software today.  During our interview he brought up some interesting concepts that I want to share.

First, I asked what advice he had for companies just starting to look at enterprise mobility.  He listed many different things companies should consider, and you can hear about all of them on the full podcast, but I wanted to highlight one of them here.  Mark said enterprises must develop mobile applications to offer an “at a glance" experience.  What did he mean?  He meant mobile device users want the right information - at a glance.

Mobile users are often on the go.  They are working, walking, and believe it or not driving.  They may be with a customer.  They may be using only one hand as their other hand is holding a tool.  The environments that mobile workers spend their time in dictate that the right information should be available quickly and easily.

Mobile workers will not long tolerate complicated screens and difficult one handed queries.  They need mobile applications that understand their users.  They need mobile applications that know the roles and responsibilities of their users.  They want mobile applications that know the context of their activities and can predict their needs.

Location-based services, context aware mobile applications and mobile business intelligence solutions that work together can provide many of these capabilities.  I look forward to seeing more of these kinds of mobile applications.

Look for this!
We have been improving the Mobile Enterprise Strategies site over the past couple of months by adding some new technologies.  This article highlights these new technologies and how to take advantage of them.  The purpose and goals of these changes are to make the information on the site easier for you to consume.

  1. We have added the ability to listen to recorded interviews, rather than just read my notes about them.  This removes me, as an imperfect translator, from the process.
  2. We created a YouTube channel, and uploaded the recordings to the YouTube channel so you could subscribe, watch or listen to them.  However, YouTube has its own limitations.  Recordings over 15 minutes need to be broken into multiple parts, and you need a live connection to YouTube to listen to the recordings.
  3. We created a new site to publish podcasts.  Blogger, where my main blog is hosted, does not support embedded podcasts or podcast subscriptions.  Therefore, we set up an additional site that enables you to subscribe to my podcasts on your Apple iTunes account and have all new podcasts downloaded to your mobile devices automatically when you sync.  You only need to subscribe once.  Now you can listen to my obnoxious voice when you are on the beach, in a duck blind, camping, driving, having a romantic candlelight dinner, or on vacation any where in the world.  Just click on this link and look for the image shown above.  Click on it and you are subscribed.
I hope some of these improvements are...well, actually improvements.

Efficient Workforces and Network Centric Mobility Strategies

NHS's Stephen Chilton
I interviewed Stephen Chilton from the UK's NHS (National Health Services) today about their enterprise mobility solutions and plans.  I will publish the entire 29 minute interview next week in my first official podcast that can be subscribed to and downloaded on iTunes (OK so I am a bit slow).  During this interview Stephen talked about dozens of different mobile applications they use, but one in particular caught my attention.  It allows hospitals to better care for their patients during the night when there are fewer staff on duty.

When there is better communications, better visibility, more knowledge about resource locations and better access to information, then you are in the best situation to efficiently support the needs of your customers/patients.

The military is also finding this to be true.  Using a Network Centric Operational strategy, they can put the right people and right assets in the right place at the right time.  This results in a workforce multiplier that maximizes the effectiveness of your team and limited resources.  In both cases, enterprise mobility plays a key role.

Stay tuned for the full interview with Stephen Chilton here next week.

The Military and Mobile Devices

The U.S. military is preparing to release in July 2011, a new mobile development environment called the Mobile /Handheld CE Product Developers Kit, an Android-based smartphone framework and suite of applications for tactical operations.  This is part of the Joint Battle Command-Platform or JBC-P Handheld program.

The platform is intended to help mobile applications developed for the military to better integrate with the following systems:
  • Mapping
  • Blue force tracking (friendly forces)
  • Tactical Ground Reporting, or TIGR tactical graphics
  • Critical messaging (such as SPOT reports, Medevac and Mayday)
I see this as similar to what SAP is doing with the Sybase Unwired Platform and project Gateway.  They are developing platforms to enable a standard way to integrate with core processes.

Lt. Col. Mark Daniels, product manager for JBC-P says, "Allowing industry to freely develop apps within a government-led software environment means the Army can leverage fresh ideas and technology while still maintaining disciplined governance."  It is for the similar purpose of maintaining disciplined governance that it is necessary for SAP to define how mobile devices integrate and interact with SAP.

"We're going to allow third-party developers to actually develop capabilities that aren't stovepiped," said Daniels. That means there will be interoperability across the entire family of military systems of JBC-P, which would include the platforms, the aviation, the logistics community, the tanks, the Bradleys and the handhelds.  Eliminating stovepiped applications is also a motivation of SAP's.
