Analysis firm Canalys reports Android phones took 35 percent of the world's smartphone market share for the first quarter of the year.  That's up from 32.9 percent the quarter before.

Apple's overall share of operating profit jumped from 43 percent in the fourth quarter to 50 percent in the first quarter.  By contrast, Research In Motion Ltd.'s share of operating profit stayed flat at 16 percent.  Apple began with just 4 percent of industry operating profits in 2007, climbing to 14 percent in 2008, 31 percent in 2009 and 41 percent in 2010.

Apple is poised to own three-quarters of the major $3.8 billion mobile application market this year and will continue to own as much as 60 percent of that sumptuous pie through 2014.

In a move to secure fraying market share against their bourgeoning competitors, RIM and Microsoft are partnering.  Microsoft will integrate its Bing search and map application at the device operating system level.

In its second quarter, Apple claimed a full half of the operating profits generated by the industry’s eight largest manufacturers.  And it did it with only an 18.6 percent share of the smartphone market and a 4.9 percent share of the broader handset market.

The worldwide mobile phone market grew 19.8 percent year over year in the first quarter of 2011.  According to IDC, the smartphone segment of the market is driving this exponential growth.

Nokia remains far and away the largest manufacturer of mobile phones on the planet, commanding some 29.2 percent of the global market during the first quarter of 2011. That number actually represents an increase of 0.6 percent compared to the first quarter of 2010.

A new report from Global Industry Analysts predicts that the global smartphone market will reach a total of 1.64 billion units by 2017.  This growth makes it imperative that businesses continue to evolve their mobile strategies.

Global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2011 reached 100 million, a drop of 0.5 percent compared to fourth quarter of 2010 shipments and a 75 percent gain over first quarter of 2010, according to a new report by ABI Research.

Brisk smartphone sales—with Apple's the briskest of all—helped push global mobile phone shipments to 371.8 million units during the first quarter, IDC has reported.  The figure was a 20 percent jump from the 310.5 million units that shipped a year earlier.

Toward the beginning of the Royal Wedding, daily texting/multimedia texting traffic in the U.S. and U.K. combined registered a 600 percent increase.  In the U.K. specifically, the Royal Wedding ranked as the second-most popular texting occasion in 2011 to date, after New Year’s Day.   Sybase calls this result “astonishing” given that messaging traffic for the other highly-ranked U.K. “events” (New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, Easter) was measured over 24 hours whereas the Royal Wedding was only a four hour event.

Nokia's smartphone market share dropped to 25 percent in the first quarter, down from 40 percent in the first quarter of 2010.  While Nokia remains positive about its strategic shift to the Windows Phone 7 platform, ABI Research believes its losses will accelerate through 2011.
