Analysis firm Canalys reports Android phones took 35 percent of the world's smartphone market share for the first quarter of the year. That's up from 32.9 percent the quarter before.

Apple's overall share of operating profit jumped from 43 percent in the fourth quarter to 50 percent in the first quarter. By contrast, Research In Motion Ltd.'s share of operating profit stayed flat at 16 percent. Apple began with just 4 percent of industry operating profits in 2007, climbing to 14 percent in 2008, 31 percent in 2009 and 41 percent in 2010.

Brisk smartphone sales—with Apple's the briskest of all—helped push global mobile phone shipments to 371.8 million units during the first quarter, IDC has reported. The figure was a 20 percent jump from the 310.5 million units that shipped a year earlier.

Toward the beginning of the Royal Wedding, daily texting/multimedia texting traffic in the U.S. and U.K. combined registered a 600 percent increase. In the U.K. specifically, the Royal Wedding ranked as the second-most popular texting occasion in 2011 to date, after New Year’s Day. Sybase calls this result “astonishing” given that messaging traffic for the other highly-ranked U.K. “events” (New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, Easter) was measured over 24 hours whereas the Royal Wedding was only a four hour event.

Nokia's smartphone market share dropped to 25 percent in the first quarter, down from 40 percent in the first quarter of 2010. While Nokia remains positive about its strategic shift to the Windows Phone 7 platform, ABI Research believes its losses will accelerate through 2011.
