Field Services, Enterprise Mobility and Strategies

I had the thrill of meeting many great people last week while consulting and advising a large European utility company on enterprise mobility, real-time enterprises and networked field services.  I spent four days onsite working with multiple teams understanding their current strategies, processes, ambitions and challenges and helping them formulate an enterprise mobility strategy that would work for them.

The late military strategist, Colonel John Boyd always taught that success in the field comes from three key points in the following order:
  1. People (well trained, intelligent, motivated)
  2. Ideas (good strategies, processes and philosophies)
  3. Things (technologies and resources)
I believe the Colonel.  The team from the utility requested that I spend the week with them helping them to understand enterprise mobility from a global perspective, and to learn what other best in class organizations are doing.  I worked very closely with this team, had good food, laughter and lodging (a castle), and know these people to be motivated and brilliant thinkers.

We explored their current environments across multiple regions, goals, challenges, processes and infrastructures.  I shared best practices, what I have seen other best in class companies doing to optimze their field services strategies, and provided recommendations.

The end result of our work together was an understanding of the mobile technology architectures, frameworks and infrastructures that would be needed to support their ambitions and strategies to run a best in class, real-time, field services organization.

Now back to the Colonel's points.  At the utility company, we first needed to understand what the strategies (Ideas) for delivering field services were or should be before we could hope to focus in on the appropriate technology to support it.  We spent the first part of our time together discussing the definition and vision of the "real-time" field services organization.  We asked ourselves, "What does a real-time service organization look like, and what strategies and processes need to be adopted in order to support and manage it?"

Once the team at the utility company identified the vision they had for their organization and processes, the next step was to review the technologies (Things) needed to efficiently and cost-effectively support their vision.

If your organization would benefit from this kind of workshop, please contact me.

Steve Jobs: You Will Be Missed

In 1987 I worked in downtown Portland, Oregon at the Nynex Business Center (formerly IBM Product Centers).  We sold IBM, Compaq and Apple products.  I was a young college intern, fresh off the dairy farm and I was in awe of our sales team.  They lived a lifestyle I had only read about.  They traveled, they drove BMWs, they lived in downtown condominiums...and they all had something in common - they were in awe of Apple's Macintosh computer.  That was my first impression of the genius in Steve Jobs.

Here are five things that have most impressed me about Steve Jobs:
  1. He was driven out of Apple and the company tanked.  Steve came back and re-created one of the most respected, innovative and successful companies on the planet.
  2. He went into a different industry with Pixar, and created a wildly successful company in the movie industry while pioneering a whole new genre of big time, money making, annimated films.  Pixar was sold to Disney for billions of dollars.
  3. He repeatedly impressed us with his designs and understandings of what we wanted, even before we did.
  4. I have been in the mobile industry for over a decade.  Steve changed my world.  He did not move the enterprise mobility industry forward with baby steps, it was giant leaps that took us beyond our own imaginations.
  5. He not only was a product guy, he created markets.  His vision of the Apple iTunes store revolutionized mobility.  A market place?  This required an entirely different set of skills, but he had them.
Steve showed us that success can be accomplished repeatedly.  Genius can be genius across many different industries.  He showed us that success is not a roll of the dice, but a mindset.  I will miss Steve Jobs.

Mobility ROI Weekly - Week of September 26, 2011, Part 1

This week I will publish several Mobility ROI reports (read Part 2 here), as I have a bunch of them that I have saved up over the past few weeks but have not had time to share.  The ROI (return on investment) report includes ROIs that I come across in my weekly research on the topic of enterprise mobility.  My goal is to create an archive of mobility ROIs that we can all use. I hope you find this useful.

Norton Rose Group, an international business law firm, needed a mobile solution for their employees so they would have full access to company resources and information while on business trips.  Mobileiron was chosen to provide a mobile solution for Norton Rose employees. The company received the following ROIs:
  • ROI - Increased productivity by enabling 1,800 employees on three continents the ability to access company resources while traveling between offices and while meeting with clients on business trips.
  • ROI - Employees could keep business related information separate from their personal information on mobile devices which enabled a BYOD (bring your own device) policy.  A BYOD policy provides the benefit of reducing capital expenses.
  • ROI - Extended the user choice for mobility beyond corporate issued BlackBerry devices to iPhones, iPads and more.  Again, a BYOD policy provides the benefit of reducing capital expenses.
  • ROI - Secured and protected sensitive information.  Having a secure mobility system was essential to supporting clients' needs for privacy and the workforce's need for mobility.
  • ROI - Cost reduction by enabling different regions to set-up different policies and configurations to ensure compliance with local regulations.  This eliminated the need for different MDM (mobile device management) systems in different regions that would have increased costs.

Click Software recently provided Angilan Water, a UK based utility company, with a range of mobile enterprise solutions that included mobile-based scheduling and management programs that allowed employees to work more efficiently. The reported ROIs were:
  • Increased service levels by 33 percent
  • Reduced average travel per job by 24 percent
  • Decreased the works backlog by 95 percent in some process areas
  • Decreased overtime by 11 percent

Helzberg Diamonds needed an easy way for their traveling employees to have access to relevant, updated data on inventory while on business trips.  Webalo was chosen to provide a mobile tool that gave employees the ability to access store inventory data through a handheld device.  The ROIs that followed were:
  • ROI - Increased productivity by enabling Helzberg employees to access company data while traveling across country.
  • ROI - Access to enterprise data via Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Symbian, Windows Mobile, or Java-enabled devices enabled Helzberg employees to choose the best device for their needs.
  • ROI - Improved productivity and efficiencies by enabling Helzberg executives to view their sales reports and retail totals for all stores within a region on their mobile devices while traveling.

The HMTL5 Standard - Where Do Things Stand?

In this article we are going to explore the status of the HTML5 standard. The HTML5 specification from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) can be found at http://dev.w3.org/html5/spec/Overview.html.  A version-control record of all changes to the HTML5 standard are available at:

Predictions for the completion of the HTML5 standard vary widely. An article from Vision Mobile, published in June, states that HTML5 completion is not expected before 2014. (http://www.visionmobile.com/rsc/researchreports/HTML5%20and%20what%20it%20means%20for%20the%20mobile%20industry.pdf

In May of 2011 W3C announced, "W3C reconfirmed today that, as announced, these specifications are on track to become stable standards in 2014."

http://www.w3.org/2011/05/html5lc-pr.html.en

Regardless of when the HTML5 standard is completed, developers are taking advantage of the HTML5 features currently available. Contemporary Analysis recently conducted an online survey with web developers about HTML5. The survey was conducted on behalf of appendTo, an HTML5 and JavaScript consulting company. 84 percent of developers indicated they plan to use HTML5 in projects within the next 6 months. From the responses, the survey revealed the top HTML5 features that developers plan on using. Beyond the new HTML5 semantics, the most popular choices were:
  • Local data storage
  • Multimedia capabilities
  • Advanced graphics capabilities
  • 3D effects
Other HTML 5 features which developers want are:
  • Geolocation
  • Interactivity features, such as drag-and-drop
