Kony Solutions wanted to expand into the enterprise mobility arena, and Sky Technologies needed more investment and a bigger, global presence. Both Kony Solution and Sky Technologies have good technology stories and reputations. This will make them both stronger and more formidable mobile application development platform competitors. There is definitely market consolidation occurring.
Kony Solutions has been working hard over the last year to expand from their B2C mobility roots into the enterprise mobility space and this acquisition will bolster their credentials as Sky Technologies has over 14 years of experience delivering mobile solutions into the SAP ecosystem and over 100 SAP mobility deployments with large companies. I have spoken to many SAP/Sky Technologies' customers over the years and have always heard good reports on their mobility solutions.
This spring I had the opportunity to film an interview with Kony Solution's Chief Mobile Officer Sam Lakkundi in which he shares details of their ambitions. The Tempo of Enterprise Mobility
I taught mobile strategy workshops in 11 countries last year. In these workshops, one of the first questions I ask is, "What tempo is your business wanting and/or needing to support?" The definition of tempo that I use is "rate of motion or activity." In other words, "Does your business environment require a real-time data and communication environment, near-real-time, or is an hourly or daily tempo sufficient?" These are important questions and they dictate what kind of mobile solution architecture you should be considering.
I helped a large mining company a few years ago to think through their mobile strategy. They operated large underground mines in remote locations. They needed production numbers from the mine to prepare downstream resources to process and transport the mined materials. They needed to know who came to work in remote locations, who was sick, who was on vacation, etc. They needed to know what equipment required repair and maintenance and when that work would impact production. They needed to know the production of each shift.
At the time the mining company contacted me, they were using color coded sheets of dirty paper to collect this data in the mine, and at the end of each shift, the supervisor delivered it to a job shack at the top of the mine and an administrative person would enter the data into a networked software system on a desktop computer.
The mining company wanted to upgrade their processes and communication from once every shift, to a real-time tempo. They wanted instant notification if equipment broke down, and if parts or expert technicians were needed to keep production going. They wanted to know instantly about any safety issues. They wanted to know the production numbers throughout the shift, not just at the end of the shift.
Every business process and industry has an optimal operational and communication "tempo." Knowing what tempo is possible, and how an increased tempo could help improve your operations is critical. Enterprise mobility solutions have the capability of revolutionizing complete industries by increasing their tempo to provide better customer service, respond to issues faster, fix problems before they become bigger, take advantage of opportunities before competitors can respond, and to greatly improve productivity and efficiencies.
Some companies understand the competitive advantages that an increased tempo offers, but others don't. Even today, I have seen companies implementing enterprise mobility solutions and mobile strategies that effectively limit them to a relatively slow tempo for the next three or four years, while their competitors are creating infrastructure and mobile architectures that will enable real-time communications and updates. These companies see value in real-time business analytics, real-time updates, real-time alerts and notifications, real-time GPS tracking, real-time scheduling, real-time CRM data, real-time inventory updates, real-time production information, etc.
What tempo would optimize your business or business process? What will it take to support a faster tempo? Do you have the capability of processing and utilizing real-time mobile data, or would the data be wasted on antiquated back-end systems and and out-data processes?
My recommendation is to understand your current tempo of communication and operations and how an increased tempo could positively impact your business. Identify the bottlenecks in your system that limit your tempo and start removing them. Mobile data sent from smartphones, tablets, mobile handheld computers, M2M, RFID, bar code scanners, GPS, etc, can provide you with real-time data. Your challenge is knowing what to do with it, and how to integrate and process it to improve your competitive position.

SAP Enterprise Mobility and M2M in Your Company
Last week I spent some time with SAP's Sanjay Poonen discussing M2M (machine-to-machine) communications. I came away from that discussion excited that SAP was focusing on this emerging market that I have found so fascinating. Most IT departments have been so focused on figuring out how to implement enterprise mobility and support communicating with people using smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices, that they have not yet thought about communicating with mobile and/or remote machines.
Here is an excerpt from the article I wrote last week about my discussions with SAP's Sanjay Poonen on the topic of M2M. "Sanjay and I spent quite a bit of time talking about where mobile security is going, beyond MDM. From MDM to Mobile App Management, to Secure Content Management, to eventually M2M (machine-to-machine) communications. He talked about how this field will have a big impact in SAP’s plans. In fact, Sanjay had just chaired a conference call with about 50 SAP internal people to brainstorm about M2M, and there is a great deal of excitement around SAP’s plans in this area."
Perhaps it is early, but not too early to begin pondering the strategic value of M2M in your company. What machines, sensors, facilities, security systems, vehicles, plant equipment, supplies and materials would it be valuable for your ERP and other systems to automatically communicate with? What automatic monitoring data would be useful for your operations?
Canal and irrigation management systems are regularly using M2M technology today in remote sensors to record and wirelessly transmit water levels, the statuses of gates and to adjust water levels.
Utility companies are one of the biggest users of M2M technologies. Their assets (lines, substations, transformers, pipelines, storage tanks etc) are in remote locations and remote M2M sensors and wireless chips can monitor their statuses and report to a central location.
Fleet management systems also take advantage of M2M. Vehicles report their location, speed, fuel usage, hours of operation, repair and maintenance needs all automatically using M2M. This is machine's sending data automatically to other machines.
Vending machine companies today are widely using M2M technologies that enable their vending machines to automatically report inventory levels and other information from the kiosk or vending machine. You can imagine the savings in efficiencies if the route driver knows in advance exactly what each vending machine needs, and when it needs it to maximize sales and productivity.
Manufacturing plants can be revolutionized by the use of M2M technologies. Can you imagine having a central team managing plants around the world from one location that is receiving and processing M2M communications from all of the equipment in all the plants? Wow!
Large companies can end up having massive amounts of M2M data flowing into the company. The next challenge of course is what to do with it. M2M data looks just like data coming in from a smartphone. The data from a Yes or No answer on a smartphone app, looks just like M2M data reporting the gate is open in yard #3. IT departments need to ensure the data is secure and accurate. They need to monitor and track all of their M2M technologies and wireless embedded chips to ensure they are working properly and the data is good. This data needs to be integrated with the right systems. The systems need to understand what to do with it.
M2M communications can be the front-end data collection mechanisms for many systems. The automated inputs for all kinds of business processes. Big Data technologies and business analytics to quickly interpret the meaning of all the data and to translate it into a form that can help managers make good real-time data driven decisions in the field. These alerts and notifications can be sent to the mobile devices of managers no matter their locations for quick and immediate responses.
M2M systems can reuse many of the same mobile middleware, mobile device management, integration, provisioning and security components that are used for supporting enterprise mobility today. The main challenge will be developing an enterprise-wide M2M strategy, and since this is also the big challenge with enterprise mobility, we may have to wait in line.

What Do Mobility Consultants Really Think?
Earlier this week I wrote an article titled, "What Do Mobile Technology Vendors Really Think?", which covered technology vendors' responses to my "2012 Mid-Year Enterprise Mobility Survey." This article is reviewing the answers from enterprise mobility consultants and comparing and contrasting them with the mobile software vendors' answers.
Q: What are your biggest challenges to implementing enterprise mobility today?
A: #1 answer - Developing an enterprise-wide mobile strategy, #2 - Determining anticipated ROIs, and #3 - Finding qualified mobility experts to assist with implementations.
The first two rankings were the same between mobile technology vendors and mobile consultants, but finding qualified mobility experts was a bigger problem for mobility consultants.
Q: Where do you expect to find the biggest ROIs as a result of implementing mobile solutions?
A: #1 answer - Increased productivity of mobile workers, #2 - Real-time data collection and reporting from mobile workers, #3 - Improve decision making by receiving real-time data.
Mobility consultants share the same answer #1 as mobile technology vendors, but consultants placed "Real-time data collection and reporting from mobile workers" as their 2nd highest ROI and it was #4 for mobile technology vendors. Improved customer service was #3 with mobile technology vendors, but ranked #5 for mobility consultants.
Q: How important is it to select a standard MADP (mobile application development platform) before developing mobile solutions for your company?
A: Mobility consultants ranked it #3 - Very Important
Mobility consultants ranked it 3 - very important, and mobile technology vendors ranked it similar at 2.9.
Q: How important is mobile security to your company's mobile strategy?
A: Mobility consultants gave it a 2.7 score which is between "Somewhat Important" and "Very Important"
Mobility consultants and mobile technology vendors rated it nearly the same. Mobile technology vendors gave it a 2.8.
Q: How important is HTML5 or HTML5 hybrid apps to your company's enterprise mobility plans?

A: The answer was a weighted average of 3.2 out of 4 - with 1 being "Not Important" and 4 being "Critical."
Mobile technology vendors rated it higher in importance at 3.5, than did the mobility consultants.
In summary, the answers were very close between mobility consultants and mobile technology vendors with the exception of where they anticipated finding the biggest ROIs.

What do Mobile Technology Vendors Really Think?
I am writing an analyst report based upon the survey data from last month's 2012 Mid-Year Enterprise Mobility Survey. Thanks again for everyone that took it! I filtered the data to learn the opinions of those that identified themselves as mobility vendors. I find these answers very interesting because mobility vendors talk to a lot of people, as a result, their opinions are often a reflection of what they hear in the market.
Q: What are your biggest challenges to implementing enterprise mobility today?
A: The number 1 answer was, "Developing an enterprise-wide mobile strategy." There was a tie for the next 2 between, "Determining anticipated ROIs" and, "Educating stakeholders on the potential impact of enterprise mobility on the business."
Q: Where do you expect to find the biggest ROIs as a result of implementing mobile solutions?
A: The number 1 answer was, "Increased productivity of mobile workers." The number 2 answer was, "Improved decision making due to real-time data." The number 3 answer was, "Improved customer service."
Q: How important is it to select a standard MADP (mobile application development platform) before developing mobile solutions for your company?
A: This answer surprised me. The ranking was from 1 to 4, with 1 = Not important and 4 = Critical. The weighted average answer was 2.9. It seems there are a lot of mobile app developers that are developing apps without a MADP involved.
Q: How important is mobile security to your company's mobile strategy?
A: The answer (a weighted average) was 2.8 out of a 3 - very important. As these are mobility vendors answering, you would expect them to believe in the importance of mobile security.
Q: How important is HTML5 or HTML5 hybrid apps to your company's enterprise mobility plans?
A: The answer was 2.8 out of a 4 - with 1 being "Not Important" and 4 being "Critical." The 2.8 weighted average is between "Somewhat Important" and "Very Important" on the scale. It seems vendors are still still hedging their bets.
Q: How difficult is it to find third-party consulting talent with the right expertise in enterprise mobility?
A: The answer was a weighted average of 2.2 out of 3 - with 1 being "Not difficult" and 3 being "Very difficult." It seems there remains a shortage of experienced talent around enterprise mobility.
Q: How important do you believe tablets will be to your enterprise mobility plans?
A: The weighted answer was 2.9 out of 3 - with 1 being "Not important" and 3 being "Very important."

SAP Enterprise Mobility Update with Sanjay Poonen

Sanjay updated me on the record Q2 sales numbers for all
aspects of SAP’s innovations – Hana, Mobile and Cloud, and then we went into more details around all things mobile. He
also shared how Syclo's Founder Rich Padula, has joined his team, and is now
going to be responsible for all SAP mobile apps, including Syclo. This is a good move as Rich is a proven
mobile industry veteran. Also, Syclo's
mobile solutions are now being fully integrated with SUP. This effort is already under way, and is targeted to be completed by Q1, 2013.
Sanjay explained that SAP mobility is now organized into
four areas:
- Mobile Security
- Mobile Application Platform
- Mobile Applications (B2E and B2C)
- Messaging Infrastructure (Sybase 365)
He also shared that there is a Mobility rebranding effort
going on now that is expected to be announced in Q4 of this year. SAP will be simplifying and unifying all of
their different mobility brands, to centralize around SAP as the main brand for
Mobility, over Sybase, which had more of a database brand associated with it.
SAP continues to charge ahead aggressively with enterprise
mobility. Sanjay shared that they are
heavily recruiting mobile expertise, with some very strong talent from
competitors in the MDM and MEAP space coming over to SAP. Over the next few weeks several
well-known mobile industry veterans will be joining SAP. One of them is former Gartner Analyst, Bill
Clark.
On another topic - SAP is now investing significantly more resources into Afaria. That is smart, because while SAP
has garnered top ratings in the Mobile App Platform and Mobile Apps space, they
have seemed to have fallen behind competitors in 2011, at least in mindshare. SAP has nearly tripled the development
investment in Afaria this year, and has been winning some big deals that are replacing other MDM vendors. Sanjay said
that in Q2, SAP also did the largest deal in the history of the MDM industry, a
high 7-figure dollar OEM deal with a large global hardware manufacturer. He said that Afaria grew almost 500% YoY in
Q2, and he is seeing a great deal of interest from customers that are seeking the scalability and dependability of SAP's solutions.
SAP has recently announced a new SAP Mobile Apps Partner
program designed to give mobile app developers free access to the SAP Mobile
Platform. I am a strong believer in the
concept of try-it-before-you-buy-it and this seems like a smart move to expand
their developer base. I think anything
that can be done to remove friction from the system is a good idea. Let the developer community have access to
it, and let it stand on its own merits. Sanjay said the goals of the Mobile
business, is to not just create a 1 billion Euro business by 2015, but to deliver a
platform for tens of thousands of mobile apps to be built on, and get millions of
developers successfully using their mobility platform.
Sanjay and I spent quite a bit of time talking about where mobile security is going, beyond MDM.
From MDM to Mobile App Management, to Secure Content Management, to
eventually M2M (machine-to-machine) communications. He talked about how this field will have a
big impact in SAP’s plans. In fact,
Sanjay had just chaired a conference call with about 50 SAP internal people to
brainstorm about M2M, and there is a great deal of excitement around SAP’s plans in this
area.
M2M is basically wireless embedded chips that can be connected to remote sensors. These sensors can then wirelessly message whatever data they are monitoring. For example, the engine of a bulldozer is started in the middle of the night. The sensor on the bulldozer messages an alert to a security person to investigate. Just about any machine or piece of equipment on a plant floor can message its status to a central server. A dashboard on the M2M server can be used to monitor M2M equipped devices across a large geographic area.

M2M can play a part in many different SAP business
processes. M2M communications requires
security, messaging platforms, integration, analytics and much more. Industry analyst predict that by 2025 there
will be over 50 billion connected devices in the world. This Internet of Things can message their
statuses to systems all around the world.
You can easily see how M2M will be an important component of many
different processes and systems. SAP
fully recognizes this and is organizing their forces now, has some big plans
being baked in Research and Development, and they are hiring some key people
from within the industry to lead the M2M effort within the company. Expect to hear a lot from SAP on how the
Internet of Things, aka M2M, will progress, shortly.
