Google's New Android OS. What’s In It for the Enterprise?

Guest writer and mobility analyst Andre Guilleman shares his insights on Google's new Android OS version, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Google’s release of Android 4.0, dubbed “Ice Cream Sandwich,” is undoubtedly geared towards consumers but it’s got a few new features that were clearly designed for corporate IT. But what’s their strategy here?

Early on, BlackBerry cornered the enterprise market with unparalleled security features. Windows Mobile gained and then lost the field service sector by partnering with rugged device manufacturers. Then Apple forced its way into the enterprise from the top down, with a smartphone that was so slick that it was irresistible to top execs. Android, it seems, is riding the consumerization wave of personal phones being used for business-related tasks, with or without the blessing of IT administrators.

With Ice Cream Sandwich, Google just made it a little bit easier for IT departments to say “yes” to their Android users. OS 4.0 includes:

  • A keychain API with encrypted storage so applications can utilize private keys, certificate chains, and user certificates
  • Address space layout randomization (ASLR) to secure device memory-management
  • A VPN API with secure credential storage to help lock down data transmissions
  • And for companies that need to keep top secret info locked down (and perhaps for our friends in HR), new device policy management controls that can remotely disable the camera

Although the new enhancements won’t send companies scrambling to replace their BlackBerrys with Droids, it’s all cool stuff that makes the Android OS more palatable for the enterprise.

About André Guillemin:  He has over ten years of experience in health care, financial services, and mobile technology. He spent the past three years focused on cross-industry solutions for mobile enterprise application development, including line of business uses in manufacturing, life sciences and wealth management. Mr. Guillemin frequently contributes to industry publications, panels, and events, and is available for consultation on the strategic and tactical use of mobile technologies in the enterprise.

Enterprise Mobility and Competitive Advantages

In Netcentric Strategies' recent Enterprise Mobility Survey 2011 the following question was asked, "What are your company's motivations for wanting to deploy mobile applications?"  Three numbers in the survey results particularly stood out to me:
  • Improve customer interaction and service 48.6%
  • Achieve competitive advantages 41.7%
  • Improve brand and sales 25.2%
These numbers are highlighting "strategic" and important business motivations for deploying mobile applications.  The numbers do not point to specific mobile technologies, but rather specific motivations for deploying mobile solutions.

I am climbing back onto my soap box to say mobile technologies are simply means to accomplish business goals and strategies.  One of the key focuses of companies today should be on how they can utilize enterprise mobility to accomplish their business ambitions, not simply to have mobile technologies extend the same solutions to the same people.  New mobile technologies without new strategies, is wasted.

It is time to ask ourselves, "What is possible, in my business, in a world of connected and mobile solutions?"

Smart Ideas and Enterprise Mobility

The late Colonel John Boyd (a leading 20th century military strategist) taught that a successful campaign or mission requires three distinct things:
  1. Smart people
  2. Smart ideas/strategies
  3. Smart things (technologies)
Boyd also taught that the order of the items in the list was important.  Smart things (technologies) was last.

For the purpose of this article let's assume we have smart people and discuss point #2 - smart ideas and strategies.  To get started, let's explore some numbers from my recent survey:
  • 41.6% of survey respondents plan to deploy more than 6 enterprise mobility applications in the next year.
  • 78.6% of survey respondents will be integrating with multiple back end systems.
  • 51.3% have no mobility policy in place.
  • 39.8% of companies have a strategic enterprise mobility plan in place, the rest do not.
We can see from these survey results that there are going to be many enterprise mobility applications, integrated with many back end systems, and there is a great need for policies and strategic planning around enterprise mobility.

In order to make smart choices about things (mobile frameworks, mobile infrastructures, mobile architectures and mobile applications), it is first necessary to have smart people and smart ideas/strategies.  Companies need an enterprise mobility strategy in place in order to know what is the required "smart things" or smart technology choices to make.

I spent several days working with a utility client recently on mobile strategies.  We explored what the company was wanting to accomplish, and how they wanted to accomplish their goals.  Once their strategy was understood and documented, finding the right mobile technologies to support it was not difficult.

New Website for HTML5 Developers

A new website, “HTML5 Developers” was launched this month.  The goal of the new website is to provide information about HTML5 applications, specifications, and development, and to provide a platform for questions and answers regarding HTML5-related topics.  According to the press release, the developers’ website at this time “...is a framework and is in desperate need of actual members to help turn the site into a beneficial resource.  As with Wikipedia and many other informational resources, the site is largely dependent on community support and the desire to participate in open dialogue.”

More from the website,  “The purpose of this network is to provide a platform for discussing issues that are relevant to HTML5.  Although the idea is to have industry professionals converse with one another, we will also allow novice website developers and technology enthusiasts to join as members.”

HTML5 Projects on the Rise

According to TechCrunch, a freelancer.com report is expected to be released today (October 17) listing the 50 fastest growing outsourcing jobs for the third-quarter 2011.  One of the findings in the report is that HTML5 projects are up 38 percent (From second-quarter 2011 to third-quarter 2011).  That is a huge jump and reflects a trend toward the adoption of HTML5 applications.  On another note, in the same freelance.com report, Flash jobs are down 10 percent.
More from the article, "...at this rate, HTML5 will overtake Flash projects in 6 months.  Adobe is planning for a post-Flash future, with the company recently launched Edge, which enables professionals to design animated web content using HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, rather than Flash.”
