Digital Expert Interviews: Oracle's Chatbot, AI and Mobility Expert Suhas Uliyar

I am excited to share an interview I recorded with Oracle’s digital, AI, chatbot and mobility expert Suhas Uliyar. In this interview we discuss the meaning of ambient human interfaces, the technology stack that enables chatbots, the power of interfaces that you don’t have to learn, and we learn that algorithms haven’t change that much in 25 years. I learned a lot and hope you will to! Enjoy!

Oracle Mobility Emerges Prepared for the Future

    Suhas Uliyar
My friend Suhas Uliyar is now the VP of Mobile Strategy Product Management at Oracle, and he is eager to get the word out that Oracle mobility is real and here today. While SAP jumped big time into enterprise mobility in 2010 with the $5.8 billion acquisition of Sybase, Oracle has been quietly watching the market and practicing patience. They seemed for a long time to be content with standing on the side lines and treating mobility as just another channel or interface for their backend servers, solutions and databases.

Today, however, they have a multitude of rapidly growing enterprise mobility solutions and an aggressive plan and strategy for enterprise mobility.  Among their mobility products are the following:
    • Oracle Mobility Suite - MADP
    • Oracle Mobile Security Suite - Mobile Application Management/Security
    • Oracle ADF Mobile, soon to be named Mobile Application Framework - mobile app SDK
    • Oracle Mobile Cloud - MBaaS category of products
In recent years, Oracle has been surrounded by rumors they would acquire a leading MADP (mobile application development platform) vendor like Antenna Software, Kony, Verivo, etc. However, mobile platform vendors have come and gone without Oracle acting.  Analysts (I was one of them) and competitors (read SAP) were publicly challenging Oracle on their lack of action in the enterprise mobility space.  At one point, Oracle product managers called me to request the use of my enterprise mobility presentation at their conferences.  Yikes!  Clearly someone was desperate!

History, however, may reward Oracle's patience.  While veteran mobile platform vendors (including SAP) have struggled to keep up with the fast changing market, R&D investment requirements, the fickle preferences of mobile developers, and the emergence of cloud-based mobile services, Oracle has kept their focus on supporting mobile developers with integration services and tools that extend their solutions out to mobile apps. This enabled them to follow a long term, methodical and standards-based approach to mobility insulated from the ever changing mobile app development and platform space of the past few years.  It is good to have some quiet time to think and observe.

As we near the mid-year mark in 2014, it seems like the enterprise mobility market is finally stabilizing. The lessons of early adopters have been learned and shared, strengths and weaknesses of various strategies have been exposed, and the preferences of developers and IT leaders are starting to clarify.  I bet SAP wishes they had their $5.8 billion back in their pocket to invest today.

Trends in Enterprise Mobility October 2012

I have had a hunch for a while that has been confirmed by a number of recent interviews with leading enterprise mobility vendors.  It seems that as enterprise mobility rises as a priority within companies, and becomes a CEO/CIO issue rather than a line of business issue, ERP and back office application considerations start to dominate the discussion and focus.

These boardroom level discussions change the buying process for enterprise mobility.  Mobile solutions used to be considered at the line of business level, where a small group of business process experts could select what they considered best of breed. Today, in many enterprises, mobility is too important to be just a line of business decision.  The stakeholder numbers have swelled and the length of selling cycles for enterprise mobility solutions has also lengthened as a result.

Standardization is starting to dominate large enterprise mobility discussions.  The standardization of mobile middleware, mobile app development tools, security and integration with ERPs and other back office apps.  This trend makes the choices that SAP made over the past few years look very smart, or I guess it could also be interpreted as a self-fulfilling prophecy.  SAP said these are the things that are most important, and after a couple of years beating that drum the market now agrees.

This week I am attending the Oracle Open World conference.  I will be very interested to learn how Oracle is treating enterprise mobility this year.  They have been too quiet.  Stay tuned as I report, blog and tweet from San Francisco this week at OOW.  It you aren't already following me on Twitter, I invite you to do so.  My Twitter handle is @krbenedict.

Convergence in the enterprise mobility industry is happening now.  I can see mobility vendors rethinking strategies and moving resources around to support these new trends.

On the topic of trends, my most recent analyst report titled Mid-Year Enterprise Mobility Survey 2012 is now available free here http://kony.com/mid-year-enterprise-mobility-survey-2012-10.

I will be reviewing this report in a webinar on Thursday, October 4th at 1 PM ET.  I hope you can join me!  Register here!

What Mobile Software Vendor will Oracle Buy in 2012?

What mobile software vendor will Oracle buy in 2012?  This is the question I asked, and sixty-six people shared their thoughts.  Here are their answers:

    • 42% - Antenna Software
    • 27% - Kony Solutions
    • 13% - Verivo (formerly Pyxis Mobile)
    • 12% - Syclo
    • 4%   - Rhomobile

I asked this question because SAP bought Sybase, IBM bought WorkLight, HP bought webOS (oops!), and it seems like Oracle must make a move into enterprise mobility soon.  The market will not wait for Oracle, so if Oracle wants to control their future they need to act.

Mobile Expert Interview Series: VWFS's Carl Redman

I was able to schedule and conduct an interview with Carl Redman, Head of IT Development and Business Analysis at Volkswagen Financial Serivces in the UK today.  He is a veteran mobility user with two enterprise mobility implementations under his belt, and that makes him an expert in my estimation.

His first enterprise mobility implementation was a joint project between his developers and a team from Research In Motion.  The mobile solution was the Mobile Stock Audit app and was used on BlackBerry devices.  The app was integrated with SAP on the backend. It enabled his team of auditors to check on the status of over 20,000 vehicles distributed at auto dealerships around the UK.  Auditing is very important, because it can help detect dealerships that may be experiencing financial troubles.

The Mobile Stock Audit app enabled auditors to have updated reports on their BlackBerrys and to closely monitor the workloads of their auditors.

This first bespoke (customized) mobility app took six months to develop with RIM.  The mobile solution worked fabulously, but it was expensive to develop, maintain and support.  If they continued to use this bespoke model, they would need to hire additional IT staff just to develop and support future mobility applications.  Redman realized that bespoke mobility applications were not the ideal scenario for his future mobility applications.

Smartsoft Mobile Delivers Mobility Apps for SAP on Microsoft Devices

I read some interesting news today that Smartsoft Mobile has released a mobile application on the Windows Phone operating system that provides access to real-time Inventory Inquiry and Purchase Order Approvals in both Oracle and SAP. In addition, the user receives alerts about pending Purchase Orders to be approved.  The mobile application is now available for download on the Microsoft Marketplace.

Not many enterprise mobility vendors have released mobile solutions for the Windows Phone operating system to date, but I know from past interviews with Ed Krufka at Smartsoft Mobile that he is a fan of the Windows Phone operating system.

You can read more about this application on the Smartsoft Mobile blog.

Mobile Application Development Strategies for Handhelds, Smart Phones and PDAs

The mobile application framework on the mobile handheld computer, Smart Phone or PDA can be thought of as a mini-EAI application (enterprise application integration platform). In the world of SAP they have NetWeaver for integrating all of the various applications together. NetWeaver is described as an integrated technology platform. Many different mobile software applications are found on a typical mobile device and they all need to be integrated together as well including:

    • Radios - Bluetooth, wifi, RFID, GPS, Phone
    • Data collectors - RFID, barcode scanners, digital images, voice memos, GPS, credit card swipers, mobile applications and forms
    • Databases, synchronization technologies
    • OS with downloadable applications

All of these various applications need to be integrated together using some kind of mobile integration technology platform. The OS can take care of many of the simple features and functionality, but a database driven integration platform for the mobile device is required if you are going to create various application layers that are all integrated into one downloadable mobile software application that can combine all of the necessary application functionality into one synchronization platform that is integrated with your back-office business applications.

Mobile applications have many unique requirements. Among these requirements are:

    • GUI that can be resized quickly based upon the mobile device used
    • Data collection fields and forms
    • Mobile application workflow engine and validation features
    • Data validation features
    • Framework for pulling in data from third-party data collection hardware and software applications (barcode scanners, RFID, GPS, voice memos, credit card swipers, databases, etc)
    • Mobile database (small databases optimized for mobile devices)
    • Synchronization technology on the mobile device and on a central server

Mobile software application developers will want to find a good development toolkit for efficiently creating mobile applications. These toolkits can assist in quickly creating:

    • Application GUIs
    • databases
    • Synchronization scripts
    • Workflows
    • Integration with third party data collection applications
    • Data validation features
    • etc.

In addition to the basics listed above, it would also be very useful to have the following:

    • Mobile application workflow engine (as described in this article)
    • A mobile software kit based on your back-office ERP or database

Wouldn't it be nice to bring up a "work order ticket" on your Oracle or SAP system and immediately replicate the data requirements and valid data rules on your mobile device database? Today, this is a long and painful exercise. Each field in the SAP or Oracle database for that specific application would have to be analyzed to determine what is a valid data entry. The validation rules, would need to be individually documented and recreated on the mobile application database manually. An ERP centric mobile application toolkit would quickly transfer those data validation requirements to the mobile application that would be collecting the data and synchronizing back to the office.

If you have not developed industrial strength mobile applications before, it may be good to work with some experienced mobile application developers on the first few. There are strategies that experienced mobile application developers employ that can save you much time and pain.

If you would like to discuss this topic in more detail please email me.
