Mobile Strategies, PIOs, Optimized Intersections and Patterns of Life, Part 2

In Part 1 of this article, we discussed PIOs (performance impact objects) and "optimized intersections" as they relate to mobile technologies and the mobile workforces  Here in Part 2 we are going to discuss "patterns of life" capabilities and how they relate to business analytics and decision making.

In the intelligence community, patterns of life refers to the study or analysis of the patterns observed in a person's or object's life. For example, a building may be observed over time through the camera of a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) and people can be seen entering and leaving the building at particular times.  The people leaving the building drive specific vehicles and come and go from specific locations.  Over the course of a month or longer, patterns and participants can become clear and this offers valuable information to the analyst.


A company does not require a UAV to be able to observe "patterns of life."  GPS and workforce tracking solutions, customer behaviors, data capture technologies and smartphones enable you, over a period of time to observe the patterns of life of your workforce, vehicles, equipment and customers.  Here is a list of pattern of life examples:

  • Hours equipment is in operation, moving and sitting idle.
  • Workforce driving habits.
  • Time of day that customers want deliveries.
  • Route speeds between delivery points at different times of the day
  • Locations where company vehicles refuel.
  • Places where service technicians purchase parts, materials and supplies.
  • Driving time vs. billable work time.
  • Ideal locations for company warehouses, suppliers and sales offices based upon proximity to work and customers. 

Once this data is collected and analyzed, patters of life can emerge that were never before recognized.  The next step is to represent these patterns on a map.  Barry Barlow, a Director at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) says, "If you go into any operations center today you will see people using a Google Earth representation of what’s going on in the world."  Just seeing the patterns and activities visually represented is powerful.

Patterns of Life only emerge if you have visibility into operations in the field.  This data is most often collected through GPS vehicle and equipment tracking, and mobile device data collection.

An area of particular interest to me was the workflow description in Syclo's press release, "...your technicians are guided through intuitive, action-driven workflow to ensure they capture all relevant information - including work performed, failure codes, parts used, and more."  The ability to guide your workforce through specific tasks, in remote locations, using mobile apps is becoming increasingly important, especially in utilities where they are losing many of their most experienced workers due to retirement.

Enterprise asset management is one of those areas that many solutions come together.  A mobile EAM system can include:

  • Work orders (field service management)
  • Time and attendance (HR and payroll)
  • Parts and material used (inventory levels, suppliers, re-order, etc.)
  • Safety plans (worker safety and compliance) 
  • GIS/GPS tracking
  • etc.
Most mission critical mobility solutions, that offer competitive advantages, are not just one mobile app connected to one backend system.  It is a mobile app connected to many backend systems in unique combinations.

Mobile Strategies, PIOs, Optimized Intersections and Patterns of Life, Part 1

Several weeks ago I introduced, in an article on this site, the concepts of PIOs (performance impact objects) and PIVs (performance impact variables) and their role in managing a mobile workforce.  Today, I want to expand upon the concept of PIOs and introduce two additional concepts, 1) optimized intersections, and 2) an emerging concept from the intelligence community called "patterns of life." We will then explore how these can be useful to an enterprise seeking to maximize efficiencies and the value of their enterprise mobility solutions.

Let's first review some examples of PIOs.

People
Parts/Supplies/Materials
Tools
Job/work locations
Equipment
Transportation
Vendors
Subcontractors
Jobsite access
Permits/Approvals

For any particular job, the required PIOs must all come together at the right time and place (read 4D Field Services) in order to optimize your productivity and efficiencies (see image).  The optimized intersection is where all of these items come together in the most optimal manner.

To optimize your productivity, you can employ enterprise mobility solutions, GPS tracking devices, M2M solutions, real-time business intelligence and shared dynamic schedules that will continually estimate the "optimized intersection" for each job.


One of the challenges with implementing these kinds of "real-time" capabilities is that they often involve third parties.  Most often you do not have full control of the technology solutions that your vendors, suppliers and subcontractors use.  So how does an enterprise actually implement this strategy?

Utilizing HTML5 mobile applications on smartphones with GPS tracking and date and time capturing capabilities are a big step in the right direction.  Integrate these HTML5 apps with your "optimized intersection" and dynamic scheduling capabilities and you are making big progress.

Why HTML5?  Pure HTML5 mobile apps will allow you to support the widest number of mobile devices in the most efficient manner possible.  Especially if you want your third party subcontractors and vendors to use your mobile apps on their smartphones so they can participate in your "optimized intersection" solution.

In Part 2 of this article we introduce the concept of "patterns of life" and how it relates to enterprise mobility.

Enterprise Mobility Asia News Weekly – Week of January 16, 2011

Asia is predicted to be the fastest area of growth for enterprise mobility between now and 2016, so I am now tracking developments in this market on a weekly basis and publishing my research here.

Standard Chartered Bank - India has provided 12,000 iPhones to employees across 70 countries, replacing some 8,000 BlackBerry devices, and has developed a range of custom-built apps to streamline internal processes. “Our increasing usage of, and dependence on smartphones allows our employees to utilize a wide array of applications anywhere and at anytime,” reports Matthew Norris, CIO, Standard Chartered Bank - India. 


“The world is becoming more social. Just as e-business changed business forever, now, 10 years later we find ourselves at another junction: the coming of age for Social Business—as social computing, policies, governance and cultures are integrated into enterprise design. The explosion of mobile devices and new Cloud delivery models has paved a unique way for industries to take step further in transforming the era of Social Business,” predicts James Velasquez, Country Manager, IBM Philippines.


“At present about 7-8 percent of any corporate workforce is given phones by the employers. We see this increasing as more and more corporates replace laptops with smartphones,” says Suresh Vedula, Director, Enterprise Mobility, Nokia India.


According to a study by International Data Corporation (IDC), mobile workers will be over 37% of the total workforce by 2015.  The largest growth is forecast for Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), from 601.7 million in 2010 to 838.7 million mobile workers in 2015.







Mobile payment solutions provider Trunkbow International Holdings Limited announced on January 10, 2012 a partnership has been formed with China’s bankcard association China UnionPay to develop a new mobile payment applet.


All Deals Asia launched an iPhone app in early January, 2012, and is working with e-commerce and discount sites to become an aggregate deal site in the Asia Pacific Region.


Online shopping in India is growing, with one report showing an 18 percent increase in the past year, and the growth is expected to continue.


According to a report by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), one-third of the mobile users in India use data and internet services via their mobile devices.

Mobility Charts Weekly - Week of January 16, 2012

According to a new report from research firm NPD, iOS’s U.S. market share (by sales) jumped from 26 percent in the third quarter of 2011 to 43 percent by October and November. AT&T to Launch HTML5 App Store, Offers SDK for Mobile Web Developers

AT&T’s new AppCenter is an Android app store which will sell “unwrapped” HTML5 apps, promoting HTML5 as an alternative to native mobile apps.  The AppCenter was launched January 9, 2012, and is available in beta form on Android devices, with plans for additional platforms in 2012.  According to a January 11, 2011 article in Ars Technica, “AT&T Offers HTML5 SDK for Third-party Mobile Web App Developers”, the company has also “released a set of JavaScript APIs and a software development kit (SDK) that provide Web developers with access to certain mobile network features”.

How Long is too Long for Mobile App Development?

A few years ago my team was developing a massive mobile application for a food and beverage distributor.  It was a mistake.  The complexity of the application, basically a mobile ERP, required an extended length of development time.  During this development cycle, the requirements changed weekly as our customer thought more about each workflow and business process.

The complexity of this custom mobile application, developed as one large mobile app, ensured repeated lengthy debugging efforts, increased costs and length of development time.   This was around 2005 and we had a lot to learn.

The project was ultimately done successfully and to everyone's satisfaction, but we experienced pain and learned a great deal.  Just about every company of size will have some need for custom mobile applications, however, do each of these applications need to be giant apps with long development times?  I think not.  The food and beverage mobile app should have been about a dozen different mobile apps.  Yes, they could share a menu or UI, but behind the curtains there should have been many separate apps that could be independently developed, tested and updated.

An additional challenge was that every new version of the mobile app required a major effort to update all of the remote workers, mobile devices.  This was an inconvenient and expensive effort.

Today, there are new mobility vendors and strategies that approach these kinds of projects differently.  Webalo, for example, enables their customers to configure their own mobile apps in hours online in a SaaS based model in the cloud.  I read a press release about one of their recent customer projects today that was interesting and highlighted how much this model is different from the development and deployment models of old.  Here is a quote from their customer Nixon Hire, "Our customers’ needs are constantly changing, so we need to be flexible, and flexibility was one of the advantages we saw in Webalo,” said David Balmer, Group IT Manager at Nixon Hire. “We’re able to select the exact data and functionality that each mobile employee needs and give them mobile access in a remarkably short time for an insignificant cost.”

Many business models require constant and rapid changes to mobile apps.  I remember meeting with a large utility contractor about their mobility needs.  The utility contractor absolutely required mobile apps, and believed they would benefit from them but to my knowledge they never got them.  Why?  Every contracted job they did had different data requirements.  Building custom mobile apps that took months to design, development and deploy would never work for them.  They required a mobility vendor that would enable them to rapidly develop, edit, configure and deploy in days.  They needed basically a disposable mobile app for each new project.  This is not supported by your average mobility vendor business model.

Companies that require disposable mobile apps, or apps that need to be changed often and rapidly need a business model where they can subscribe to mobile services, rather than particular mobile apps.  Also, companies just learning about mobility can benefit from cloud based mobile solutions that can be quickly developed and configured for proof of concepts.

It is also important to recognize when the content of a mobile app is more important than the mobile app itself.  Sometimes you are just looking for a name or number.  Sometimes you just want to say "yes" or "no" to a question.  It does not require rocket science for these kind of solutions.

Aberdeen Group, in their Mobility in ERP 2011 report, said best in class companies should be looking to deliver "role" based mobile websites (or mobile apps).  What does this mean?  It means having the ability to quickly develop custom mobile apps/websites for each person or role in your company.  In order to accomplish that goal, you need a different business model than most mobility vendors are set-up to provide.

More from Aberdeen Group,  "Best-in-Class companies spend 25% of the work week trying to access information, all the others spend almost 40% of their time trying to access information."  Sometimes just providing quicker access to information via a mobile app is enough of an ROI.
