Thoughts on Enterprise Mobility, Mobile Banking and Global Economies

I have recently been reading a number of articles about mobile banking innovations in Kenya and what vendors like SAP's Sybase 365 and other companies are doing to support it.  Most people in Kenya, and many other less developed countries, don't own smartphones.  However, most do own basic mobile phones with text messaging capabilities.  As a result, many vendors and banks have built sophisticated text message-based banking services.  The following is a list of some of the available text message-based capabilities and services available in Kenya.
  • Person-to-person money transfers
  • Fund remittance from the UK to Kenya
  • Local and international money transfer
  • Loan payments
  • Product purchasing
  • Airtime purchasing
  • Funds transfers from interest-bearing accounts
  • Balance inquiries
  • Money requests
  • Attaching short messages to text-based payments
  • Inviting friends to join mobile banking services
  • Five different mobile front-ends available: WAP, SMS, Voice, USSD, and STK

SAP's Sybase 365 powers many of these text-based banking systems.  I read about Sybase 365 from time to time, but it deserves to be in the spotlight even more for it has the capacity to help revolutionize many economies.

In the book The Birth of Plenty, the noted financial expert and neurologist William J. Bernstein identifies four conditions that when occurring simultaneously are the formula for human (economic) progress.  They are as follows:
  1. Respect for property rights (inventors must have proper incentives to protect their inventions).
  2. Belief in scientific rationalism (society must possess the proper intellectual tools to support innovation and progress without penalty).
  3. Existing and functioning capital markets (businesses must have sufficient capital to pursue their visions and business plans).
  4. Effective transportation and communication systems (society must rapidly and effectively move information and finished products).
I believe that mobile technologies can help with at least two out of the four of these conditions.  Mobile text-based banking systems can provide trusted and formal banking services where they didn't formerly exist.  They can also provide rapid and effective transportation (of funds) and communication systems (that open up and support free markets).

A few years ago I read an article from The Wall Street Journal written by Ronald Bailey entitled, The Secrets of Intangible Wealth.  In this article Mr. Bailey writes about a report from the World Bank entitled, "Where is the Wealth of Nations?: Measuring Capital for the 21st Century."  The bottom line is that a nation's wealth is greatly determined by intangibles such as:
  1. Trust among people in a society
  2. An efficient judicial system
  3. Clear property rights
  4. Effective government
Bailey says that these four items, identified as "intangible capital", boost productivity of labor and result in higher total wealth.  The World Bank concludes the report by summarizing its findings as, "Human capital and the value of institutions (as measured by the rule of law) constitute the largest share of wealth in virtually all countries."

Mobile banking and mobile technologies can introduce formal banking systems, run by internationally trusted institutions, into economies and regions that previously were under-served, or lacked trusted institutions that would support economic development.

If you review the list of services (above) now available using simple and inexpensive mobile phones, you can begin to understand that mobile technologies can not only help to improve governments, but also economies.

Mobility and 4D Field Services

GPS Coordinates and Time
I have been researching and pondering the concept of the 4th dimension this week, and how it relates to enterprise mobility and field services. First I looked up the meaning of 3D or 3 dimensional.  Three dimensional is made up of length, width and height.  These are basically GPS coordinates.  With GPS coordinates you can find and identify a location on the earth or map.  If you have GPS coordinates for your mobile workforce or mobile resources you will know where they are located, right?  WRONG!!!  The only thing that you know is that at a specific time (when the GPS coordinates were captured), they were located at those locations.  Time is a very important component.  If your GPS coordinates were captured last week, they are not likely to be accurate today?

As I hinted above, the 4th dimension is time, and it is critical to managing real-time field services.  You must add time to length, width and height to make 4D.  When you have the added value of time, you can do many things.  For example:
  1. Monitor travel times by capturing departure and arrival times.
  2. Monitor work start and stop times at a particular location.
  3. Monitor job status at a particular location.
  4. Analyse the best schedules based on locations, travel times, job statuses etc.
  5. Capture KPIs and analyze them.
4D field services is the goal to achieve service optimization.  However, it is only possible when your mobile workforce and PIVs (Performance Impact Variables) are connected and using mobile technologies.  I will write more about PIVs in my next article.

As many of you know my mantra is, "Mobile technologies without mobile strategies is wasted."  There are a lot of interesting things that can be done with mobile technologies to provide a company with competitive advantages if they have a good strategy.

HTML5 – What’s New - December 14, 2011

Kony Adds HTML5 to App Building platform

Mobile platform provider Kony Solutions launched the KonyOne platform this week.  The new platform allows developers to define an app once and deploy it across multiple devices, operating systems, and channels.  It allows delivery of both native applications and mobile web – HTML5 and non-HTML5, across phones, tablets, and desktops.

Raj Koneru, CEO of Kony said, “We believe the future includes native, mobile web, and HTML5 hybrid or 'mixed mode' applications.  Using the KonyOne platform, developers can use a single code base to create optimized applications for any device, operating system or browser. They can create native, mobile web or HTML5 applications or any combination to achieve the best individual user experience."

HTML5-enabled Smartphones to Hit 1 Billion Worldwide in 2013

Research firm Strategy Analytics says that HTML5-compatible mobile phone sales will reach 1 billion in 2013, up from 336 million in 2011.  What is the definition of an HTML5-compatible phone?  An HTML5-compatible phone is defined as “A mobile handset with partial or full support for HTML5 technology in the browser, such as the Apple iPhone 4S”.

The Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, Neil Mawston, states “HTML5 has quickly become a high-growth technology that will help smartphones, feature phones, tablets, notebooks, desktop PCs, televisions and vehicles to converge in the future.”

HTML5 is Featured in “Small Business Software Trends for 2012”

In the article, "Small Business Software Trends for 2012," the author writes,
“HTML5 is shifting how we look at apps and software. Right now, the browser is central to how we use SaaS solutions (software as a service), but as more users operate remotely and via mobile devices, there is solid evidence that the browser could go away, or at least become dramatically different from what we experience today."  [Kevin Benedict Comment: It seems to me that browsers would become more important with HTML5, not less.]

The author goes on to say, "HTML5 makes it possible to add functionality to the browsing experience. If Adobe’s recent decision is any indication of the trend, they terminated their mobile Flash development work to migrate to HTML5."

HTML5 is also featured in the blog article,

December 2011 Research on Enterprise Mobility

I am sitting in my leather reading chair with my coffee next to a warm, early morning fire reading about enterprise  mobility.  I am re-reading Aberdeen Group's Mobility in ERP 2011, which is one of the best reports I have read all year, and Cognizant's whitepaper, Enterprise Mobile Apps.  Here are some of the insights I have gleaned this morning.

Aberdeen Group's paper: Best-in-Class companies spend 25% of the work week trying to access information, all the others spend almost 40% of their time trying to access information.

Cognizant's paper: Millennials (i.e. generation Y) - will increasingly be unwilling to accept the idea of being bound to a desktop computer in their work lives either as employees or customers.  In their minds, productivity, communications, collaborations and decision-making are all dependent on having a mobile device with which they can access their network of peers, whatever information they need, and hundreds of targeted applications.

The paper goes on to say that millennials may not even know how to work at peak capacity without mobile devices.

When you synthesize the ideas in these two papers the conclusion is that some of the most valuable employee skills both now and in the future is a thorough understanding of how to use mobile devices, mobile applications, their peer and social networks and a plethora of mobile information sources to quickly find and access the information they need to optimally do their job.

On August 14th of this year, Thomas L. Friedman, author of “The World is Flat” wrote an opinion piece for the New York Times that I found very insightful.  Here are a few excerpts, "…globalization and the information technology revolution have gone to a whole new level.  Thanks to cloud computing , robotics, 3G wireless connectivity, Skype, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Twitter , the iPad and the cheap internet enable smartphones, the world has gone from connected to hyper-connected.  This is the single most important trend in the world today."

Friedman goes on to say, "... to get into the middle class now, you have to study harder, work smarter and adapt quicker than ever before.  All this globalization (and I would add mobilization) are eliminating more and more “routine” work – the sort of work that once sustained a lot of middle-class lifestyles."

Mobile technologies and a hyper-connected world are changing consumers, employees, economics, politics and the enterprise in dramatic fashion today.  It is critical that companies recognize these trends and develop an enterprise mobility strategy that incorporates and optimizes the value of these trends for their organizations.

HTML5 News Weekly - Week of December 5, 2011

UK Security firm Sophos made its security predictions for 2012.  They identified new networking and web technologies, including HTML5, as major security risks for the coming year.

HTML5 removes the need for most add-ons and plug-ins because similar capabilities are built in.  However, this also means that HTML5 can become a big target for cybercrime because data is stored within the browser itself.
James Lyne, a senior technologist at Sophos, states in a December 5, 2011 InfoWorld article (http://www.infoworld.com/d/security/html5-create-new-challenges-security-pros-in-2012-180827) “Traditionally the browser has been a gateway for cyber criminals to get access to your PC, now they're going to be trying to attack the browser itself to steal its data.”

From the Wall Street Journal Tech blog, December 2, 2011 (http://blogs.wsj.com/tech-europe/2011/12/02/mobile-new-browsers-key-targets-for-cybercrooks/?mod=google_news_blog), “New Web and networking technologies will force us to learn some lessons: HTML5, the language to which modern websites are migrating, represents a substantial improvement for developers, but has introduced new vulnerabilities. Older browsers were seen as the route through which attacks could be launched. New HTML5-compliant browsers represent a new target for criminals as they have the potential to store far more information.”

SplendidCRM Software, Inc., provider of customer relationship management solutions, now offers an HTML5 offline client in all editions of its software.  Paul Rony, President of SplendidCRM Software, states "Our new HTML5 Offline Client makes SplendidCRM available on touch devices while in airplanes or at client sites without an available network."

Opera announced a new version 11.60 of their browser that includes HTML5 parsing this week.  One of the new features highlighted is the inclusion of a new HTML5 parsing algorithm which “helps unify code discrepancies among browsers."  Press Release:  http://www.opera.com/press/releases/2011/12/06/

“HTML5 is fundamentally changing the way developers approach the Web. Whether it is for desktop browsers or mobile, the language and standards of the future are not some distant point on the horizon. It is right now.”

Velocity in Field Services

Velocity - the speed and
direction of an object.
Velocity is usually a physics term, but it can also relate to enterprise mobility and field services in particular.  The term velocity is often used to describe the speed and direction of an object.   In my workshops, I use it in the context of enterprise mobility and field services to describe the ability to quickly bring all required resources (personnel, skill sets, equipment, parts, customers, schedules, etc.) to the point of need (i.e. job site) at the right time in order to optimize production and efficiencies.

How do you increase velocity?  It requires real time data exchanges between your mobile workforce, mobile assets, mobile inventories, mobile equipment, customers etc.  You need to understand the locations, status, availability and arrival and departure time of all required components.

Real-time mobile data exchanges
with PSION's EP10
From a mobile data perspective you need to have real-time mobile data exchanges that include the ability to send and receive the right data, with the right people, at the right time, in the right amounts, on the right devices.

Velocity, in the context of enterprise mobility, is a purposeful strategy.  It requires IT infrastructure that is designed to avoid latency in real-time data exchanges.  It requires a unified view of the "real-time" status of all relevant players and objects necessary to optimize the delivery of services in the field.

My mantra is, "Mobile technologies without mobile strategies is wasted."
