Best Channel Products 2011 - Handheld Computers

Remember handheld computers?  They are ruggedized, often black, and sometimes come with a pistol grip that people can use for specialized tasks.  Often they are used in situations where bar code scanning, RFID reading and other specialized tasks are needed in high volume.  Today it is easy to forget about this category of mobile devices because there are so many new and spectacular smartphones available.  However, smartphones cannot replace ruggedized handhelds in many different roles.

I stopped a Home Depot employee in an orange apron last week and asked him about the handheld computer he was carrying.  My wife just kept right on walking for some reason.  He said they could nearly run the entire store from the handheld.  He showed me how he could check products in his store inventory and all the other Home Depot stores in the area from the device.

I read an article today in Business Solutions magazine called Best Channel Products 2011.  Business Solutions magazine surveyed VARs (value added resellers) to learn what they thought were the best channel products of 2011.  In the handheld computer category the VARs chose the Omnii XT10, ultra-rugged, modular handheld computer from Psion.  I looked up the Omnii to learn more and here is how they describe it, "It is targeted at demanding users, such as ports, airports, supply chain and logistics operations. It is designed to be almost completely re-configurable in the field.  It can be adapted for new technologies or even be re-purposed as customer needs change. The upgradeable and interchangeable modules are not only developed by Psion, but also by an expanding network of more than 200 developer partners around the world.

Let me highlight some differences between smartphones and ruggedized industrial grade handhelds.  Handheld computers like the Omnii XT10 can be taken apart and adapted for different purposes.  You can replace the bar code scanner, insert an RFID reader, change the keypad, etc.  If one component is broken, it can be repaired or replaced.  If your needs change, you can re-configure the handheld to meet your new requirements.  None of those features are available on today's popular smartphones.  If you break it, you just buy a new one.

I am a big fan of smartphones, however, it is still important for all of us in the enterprise mobility space to remember there are times when a specialized and ruggedized handheld computer may be the better fit for the job.

Open Text and Their Evolving Mobile Strategies

Many of you know Open Text.  They are an important SAP Partner and leader in the enterprise content management space.  Did you know they are also developing mobile applications and acquiring mobile technology companies to expand their mobility capabilities?  In March 2011 they announced their acquisition of UK based WeComm.  Here is WeComm's description, "WeComm offers a cross-platform development platform, called Wave, for creating mobile applications that can run on iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian or Java-based smartphones."

Even before this acquisition, Open Text had their own internally developed mobility solution called Open Text Everywhere.  Here is its description, "Our mobile solutions provide your workforce with the ability to access and manage business content, keep workflow processes moving, and stay up-to-date with colleagues by using social collaboration capabilities within a single native application designed specifically for your Enterprise Content Management (ECM) deployments."

I had the opportunity last week to spend some time with Oliver Surrock and Micah Kalen with Open Text and to discuss their mobile strategies.  In September of 2010, I had the privilege of interviewing Micah Kalen about Open Text Everywhere.  You can read the interview here.

One of the reasons that Open Text purchased WeComm is to get WeComm's mobile application development platform called Wave.  They will be using the Wave Platform to develop future versions of Open Text Everywhere (OTE) and many new mobile applications.  Wave gives OTE the ability to support hundreds of mobile devices.

Wave also enables Open Text to develop and support mobile applications that have not even been imagined yet.  This is important in the dynamic and fast growing enterprise mobility market.  Here is their currently stated value proposition, "By marrying your enterprise content management and mobility strategies, you can realize a higher return on investment (ROI) through increased user adoption of your content management systems that results from your workforce having meaningful mobile access to your enterprise. Furthermore, content chaos can be avoided by keeping content consistent across Web, desktop, and mobile environments."

I asked how the Wave Platform compares with Sybase's Unwired Platform (SUP).  They described it this way, "SUP is primarily focused on "structured" mobile data, while the Wave Platform is largely focused on managing "unstructured" mobile content such as documents, photos, videos, etc.  Yes, there is some overlap, but that is true with any mobility vendor in the SAP ecosystem.  I dug a little deeper with questions about how Open Text and SAP were going to work together around mobile applications.  Their responses were that SAP is a very important partner and there are many discussions.

Oliver shared that Open Text hopes systems integrators will find the Open Text Mobile Wave Platform to be an attractive development environment.

I love the concept of mobile enterprise content management.  Until I interviewed Micah last year I had not even considered a mobile version of enterprise content management, but there certainly is a value and need.

I want to thank Oliver and Micah for sharing their time and thoughts with us.

Syclo Conversation about Trends

Syclo's Joe Granda
I caught up with Syclo's EVP of Global Marketing, Joe Granda today.  There are a lot of things happening at Syclo this year.  They are busy building support for Sybase's Unwired Platform (learn more here) and adding Android support for all of their mobile solutions.  They also just finished their largest user conference of all time where they offered over 44 different educational sessions.  Next on their schedule is SAP's TechEd where they will have a booth.

I asked Joe about trends he is seeing these days in the enterprise mobility space.  He named three:
  1. The increasing demand for tablets in the field services industry.
  2. Android is now the number one shipping smartphone.
  3. Increasing desire for customers to want mobile B2C (business to consumer) apps.
These trends have emerged just over the past few months.

Tracking and Monitoring Shipments on Aircraft - M2M Devices

OnAsset's Nikki Cuban
I had the good fortune of spending time with Nikki Cuban of OnAsset Intelligence and Wally Devereaux from Southwest Airlines today.  We discussed a new M2M (machine-to-machine) cargo tracking system designed for use on airlines called SENTRY FlightSafe.

I am reporting on this topic because it fits into the "real-time enterprise" paradigm and it introduces a new set of functionality for shippers that has not been available until now.  Using wireless, mobile and M2M technologies, companies can now track and monitor all kinds of shipments onboard aircraft.

Many vendors have cargo tracking M2M devices that wirelessly report location, but what is unique about the SENTRY FlightSafe solution is that it has been certified as safe to use on aircraft.  The SENTRY with FlightSafe has a unique patented built in intelligent radio suppression system.  Here is how OnAsset describes it, "The FlightSafe technology is a patented feature unique to the SENTRY platform.  Its combination of embedded sensors and advanced processor algorithms intelligently control its functions to comply with FAA regulations.  Just as passengers are asked to turn off their cell phones prior to takeoff, FlightSafe does this automatically."

The SENTRY tracking system does much more than report physical location based upon GPS coordinates.  In addition, it has an array of sensors in its smartphone sized package that records environmental conditions around the device.  The sensors record the following:
  • High accuracy GPS, AGPS
  • Temperature
  • Pressure
  • Humidity (by request)
  • Accelerometer (Tri-Axis)
  • Shock
  • Vibration
  • Motion
  • FlightSafe aircraft detection
What kinds of shipments need this type of tracking system?  Nikki said it is targeted for high value cargo.  She listed a few as:
  • Human organs for transplant
  • Medical specimens of all kinds
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Electronics
  • Gold
  • Imported flowers
  • Etc.
Nikki added that there are literally thousands of high value and perishable products that would be a good fit for this tracking and monitoring device.  In fact, Southwest Airlines announced this new solution to their shipping customers and all kinds of interesting use cases are now being discussed.

What are the ROIs?  Here are a number that Nikki mentioned:
  1. Confidence is everything in the shipping and logistics business.  Customers must have confidence that your company can deliver their cargo safely.  Providing the capability to track and monitor the shipment is big!  Now shippers can provide this capability for air shipments as well.
  2. Lower insurance premiums by reducing theft, loss and spoilage.
  3. Reduce administrative costs and distractions caused by theft, loss and spoilage.
  4. Improved customer services by providing visibility and peace of mind to your customers.
The smartphone sized SENTRY devices are valuable in themselves.  Each company that uses them must devise a system whereby they can be retrieved and reused.  I was particularly impressed by the fact that the SENTRY M2M devices can be wirelessly reconfigured for different use cases.  This is huge and will lower the TOC (total cost of ownership) of these devices.

HTML5, Enterprise Mobility and Visual Effects

This week let’s explore an additional feature of HTML5 used for visual effects, and how it can be used by developers of mobile applications. HTML5’s Canvas capabilities allow for smooth animation and impressive visual effects.  Mobile business intelligence apps, mobile marketing campaigns, mobile product catalogs, CAD drawings, Maps, blueprints, etc, could all benefit from these features.

Canvas is basically a region in your web page where you can use JavaScript to draw whatever you’d like. It has no content and border of its own, but has HTML5 code-defined height and width attributes. From the W3C standard: “The canvas element provides scripts with a resolution-dependent bitmap canvas, which can be used for rendering graphs, game graphics, or other visual images on the fly  (http://dev.w3.org/html5/spec/Overview.html#the-canvas-element)."

Sybase shared at SAPPHIRENOW 2011 that SUP (sybase unwired platform) version 2.1 would be largely based upon HTML5.  They also shared that many of their new mobile applications will be taking advantage of HTML5 and features like Canvas.

Browsers currently supporting the canvas element are: Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Opera, and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Some anticipated uses of canvas include building graphs, animations, games and image composition.

Software vendors are already taking advantage of these features.  Here is an example - On August 1, 2011, Adobe released a preview version of an HTML5 development tool, Adobe Edge. It seems to be Adobe’s early answer to the Apple mobile device problem with Flash. Adobe announced on Tuesday, August 2, that Edge was downloaded over 50,000 times in the first 24 hours. The preview version can be found here: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/edge/.

According to PC Magazine, “Edge has a definite focus on the mobile Web—the fastest growing segment of Internet use—as shown in the tool's inclusion of the WebKit browser engine, which powers today's dominant mobile platforms: Apple iOS, Android, WebOS, and Blackberry. Despite this focus, the tool will also be able to create content for traditional desktop browsers that support HTML5, such as Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 9, and Safari.”

Several websites offer applications, games, tools and tutorials for the HTML5 canvas element:
