mHealth and Mobility - Crowd Sourced Healthcare

I wonder sometimes if we Americans wouldn't be better off simply bypassing partisan politics and the healthcare industrial complex, and developing our own crowd-sourced healthcare program that fully utilizes mobile, M2M, cloud and big data technologies and brings them together to offer optimized healthcare services.  Perhaps we should join together into technology centric cooperatives and hire our own healthcare providers?  Perhaps technology is the answer to this problem.

Perhaps we could develop a program where each of us could be matched up with a CHP (cloud-based healthcare provider) that would provide us with smartphone apps and any additional wearable (M2M) devices that would enable him/her to monitor our health and provide guidance in the comfort and efficiency of our own homes.  When health issues arise, our CHP would manage our treatment by sending us to local labs and service providers that would perform tests and upload the results to our EHR (electronic health record) for our CHP to analyze and provide recommendation.  The analysis and treatment decisions would involve the use of big data.  This would ensure our treatments are data driven, not pharmaceutical rep driven.  Each of our health issues would then have its own cloud-based workflow and decision tree backed-up with the data that supports each plan or decision.  We could reference this health issue workflow from anywhere.

Consultations with our healthcare provider could most often be done via video conferencing on the smartphone app.  Why waste hours driving and sitting in waiting rooms for consultations.  Yes, you may lose some face-to-face value, but I think convenience and efficiency makes up for a lot of routine face-to-face encounters.

Kevin: "Doctor, I think I have a sore throat and fever."
Doctor: "You do."
Kevin: "It will probably go away on its own if I wait a couple of days, right?"
Doctor: "Right."
Kevin: "Thanks.  Can we do this over video conferencing next time?"

I personally see a different physician's assistant or doctor nearly every time I go into the doctor's office.  My visits are most often consultations and could be done equally well in a video conferencing session.

Each of us, and any healthcare services provider could access our EHR (electronic health record) with permissions and update it.  We could access our own EHR from our smartphone app.  I would love to have a personal healthcare dashboard.  I could then graph how I have gained weight over the past 20 years.  I would need that graph on a line chart, as a pie chart would simply be mean.  We could also set healthy lifestyle goals that our CHP could monitor and help coach us on.

Early in my IT career I worked for a large electronics manufacturer in Boise, Idaho that had their own in-house medical clinic for their employees.  It was wonderful.  I have since always wondered if that model could be replicated in neighborhoods, or co-ops of some kind.

Perhaps someday soon, technology rather than politics will get it done.

Marathon Travels, Workshops and Mobile Expert Interviews

I am home.  I started my Spring travel and video interview season on April 25th and wrapped it up today, July 1st.  The result is over 18 segments of the Mobile Expert Video Series recorded with mobility experts from around the globe.  If you missed them the first time, I invite you to view them here.

In between recording videos, attending school and military graduations, speaking at conferences, consulting and enjoying family time in Europe, I was able to write the forward to a new book from SAP Press on enterprise mobility (due this summer), and present a series of Eggs with Benedict, Mobile Strategy breakfast workshops both in the USA and in Europe.  This fall I will also be presenting these workshops in 4 different locations in New Zealand and in Australia.

You will be happy to know that I am trying to improve my videos.  These are definitely amateur videos, from an amateur reporter that says too many ummms, mispronounces names and has a shaky hand, but I am making slow progress.  Thanks for your patience!  Here is a fun (for me) video project where I collected a bunch of the Mobile Expert Video Series segment clips and put them together into a movie trailer.

This week, I need to catch up on my correspondence and start several new research projects so I can analyze the latest trends and changing landscape of enterprise mobility and share that information with you here in the second half of 2012.

Thanks for reading and watching www.MobileEnterpriseStrategies.com!

Guest Writer: Alok Pant on the Mobile Cloud

I want to thank Alok Pant, with Unvired, for writing this article and sharing his insights on mobile strategies and cloud computing.

Lowering the Activation Energy for Enterprise Mobility Implementations

As we talk to customers, it is clear that enterprises have not adopted Mobility as quickly as consumers.  We have had many conversations with customers, and two main points stand out.  The first is that they are finding it difficult to justify the ROI for many mobility projects.  Yes, it is true that there are certain scenarios like Field Service or Sales where the value of mobility is accepted, but beyond these it becomes more difficult.  When enterprises look to mobilize processes like Purchase Order Approval or Travel Expense approval, the barrier to mobility has to be reduced.

An analogy can be drawn to the Activation Energy concept we all learned in Chemistry—for a reaction to occur, the activation energy barrier has to be overcome/lowered.  Similarly, in our world of enterprise mobility, the ROI barrier has to be lowered.

Our second insight gleaned from customers is that IT departments today are under extreme pressure to deliver multiple projects with dwindling resources.  One large SAP customer was all set to mobilize their applications, when they had a major restructuring in their IT department.  Another high tech customer in the US is rolling out SAP to their subsidiaries globally, leaving no time or resources for mobility projects even with a recognized need.  A third customer was given the mandate to mobilize multiple business processes running on SAP in just one month.

These situations suggest that the old model of installing software on-premise, and conducting, say a 3 month POC to prove the ROI of a project is obsolete.  Companies do not have enough budget, and the cloud is increasingly getting the mindshare of the CIO.  The consumerization of IT has made all of us seek instant gratification—we want the mobile application instantly, inexpensively, and without any bother.

All this sets the stage nicely to usher in the era of the Mobile cloud. The Mobile cloud delivers a rain of mobile applications at a low cost without consuming the resources of a strapped IT department—no hardware investment, and minimal time commitment.  It is a Pay As You Go model, and eliminates the need for a capital investment.  It is scalable, provides flexibility, and insulates the firm in a rapidly changing technology environment.  The data security concerns of the cloud are understood by now, and have been successfully managed.

As more applications move over to the cloud, can the mobile cloud be far behind? Are you ready to lower the activation energy for your Mobility projects? There is no reason that your Mobile initiatives be confined to just a few use cases.  It is time to make Enterprise Mobility ubiquitous. The mobile cloud may be just the catalyst you need.

Eggs with Benedict Mobile Strategies Workshop in London

Eggs with Benedict
I had the honor of presenting a mobile strategies workshop (Eggs with Benedict) yesterday in Convent Garden's Hospital Club in central London.  The Hospital Club is a high tech and digital media gathering spot that was perfect.  The interior was very chic with couches and over-stuffed chairs, funky lighting and a lounge inside.

Attendees traveled from all parts of England, and we had some even fly in from other parts of Europe for the workshop.  I was told by a group of attendees following the workshop that it was valuable and useful.  I even had requests to return and present another series of workshops.

It is my observation, backed by solid research, that companies are struggling with developing an enterprise-wide mobile strategy.  Sometimes the IT department is the laggard, but most often I believe the business is the laggard.  Mobile technologies can truly transform a company.  It can change business models, and revolutionize industries.  The business must understand how they will respond and utilize mobility to drive competitive advantages.

I think some businesses are approaching enterprise mobility as simply an interesting set of technologies.   There is danger in not recognizing it for what it is.  Just like the web revolutionized and transformed media and the publishing industries (just to name a few), mobile technologies will lead to the demise of many companies that are not capable of understanding the scope and scale of the sea change introduced by mobile technologies.

I believe business leaders should enroll their staff in an educational process on mobile technologies.  Find an experienced mobility expert (google mobile experts) and have them stretch the imaginations of your leaders as to the possibilities of enterprise mobility.  Mobility is here for the rest of your careers, so the faster you can understand it, and create a vision and roadmap, the better for your company.
