The worldwide smartphone applications market grew more than $2.2 billion within the first quarter, according to a study by research2guidance. In 2009 the applications market had posted revenue of $1.7 billion. Mobile application download numbers reached a total of 3.8 billion in only six months, compared to 3.1 billion in 2009.

AT&T Mobility readjusted its schedule to begin offering services in a number of markets it had acquired from Verizon Wireless earlier this year. The carrier said it was moving up the launch dates in markets in South Dakota, North Dakota, Alabama, New Mexico, Arizona, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado from the originally announced “mid-2011” to “the end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011.”

The auto industry is getting fired up about wireless technology in cars and trucks, but it's not just for connecting passengers' laptops or streaming Internet radio stations. At an assembly plant outside Toronto, Ford Motor Co. is using Wi-Fi transmitters to load customized phone and entertainment features into its Edge and Lincoln MKX crossovers as the vehicles chug down the production line.

This week Audi has been demonstrating its Travolution technology on a fleet of test vehicles near its headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany. The Travolution package incorporates a number of different technologies, including vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure communications and SmartACC. The vehicle-to-infrastructure component allows vehicles to communicate with traffic signals over a combination of WiFi and 3G mobile.

The National Science Foundation has awarded a three year, $7.5 million grant to a Rutgers led research team to develop a future Internet design optimized for mobile networking and communication. The team of nine universities and several industrial partners has dubbed its project “MobilityFirst,” reflecting the Internet’s evolution away from traditional wired connections between desktop PCs and servers toward wireless data services on mobile platforms.

Garmin is recalling 1.25 million GPS devices, most of which were sold in America, because their batteries could overheat and cause fires, the company said Thursday. The affected units contain batteries made by a third-party supplier, and almost 800,000 were sold in America.

The news of Intel acquiring McAfee for nearly $8 billion caught the tech world off guard and perplexed analysts at face value. The fact is that it doesn't make much sense based on the Intel and McAfee of today, but as the dust settles the deal makes more sense when viewed as a visionary shift with an eye on where technology is headed--everywhere. The challenge for the future of Intel is that the relevance of the PC is waning in an increasingly mobile world.

China’s Union Mobile Pay is reporting an M-Commerce sales volume equivalent to $4.4 billion U.S. (30 billion yuan, which is about 3.1 billion euros), according to a report Tuesday from PaymentsSource. That service also reported 140 million registered users, as of the end of last year.

Bank of America Corp plans to begin a test program next month that lets customers use smartphones to pay for purchases in stores. Two-thirds of service providers surveyed intend to use WiMAX for mobility-based services by 2012. This indicates a richer service environment for WiMAX in the future, but at the same time, the survey showed that key challenges remain; specifically, the limited range of WiMAX-enabled mobile devices and the difficulty of building low-ARPU pricing models for developing countries.

In the UK the water utilities and the government wanted to find ways of reducing water consumption so they could delay or avoid building new water reservoirs. A new survey of hundreds of wireless industry executives from around the world found strong support for a switch from flat-rate mobile data plans to usage-based models. The survey found that 48 percent of executives surveyed predicted that carriers will focus on developing new mobile data pricing models over the next three years. Additionally, the survey showed that 55 percent of those surveyed agreed usage-based models are coming to mature markets, and 47 percent said flat-rate data plans are crimping their ability to increase revenue.

The news of Intel acquiring McAfee for nearly $8 billion caught the tech world off guard and perplexed analysts at face value. The fact is that it doesn't make much sense based on the Intel and McAfee of today, but as the dust settles the deal makes more sense when viewed as a visionary shift with an eye on where technology is headed--everywhere. China’s Union Mobile Pay is reporting an M-Commerce sales volume equivalent to $4.4 billion U.S. (30 billion yuan, which is about 3.1 billion euros), according to a report Tuesday from PaymentsSource. That service also reported 140 million registered users, as of the end of last year.

Vodafone decided a while ago that M2M represented a strong opportunity for the Group, and subsequently appointed Erik Brenneis to the role of heading up a group M2M Line of Business unit, with overall responsibility for driving Vodafone’s growth in the M2M market. Mr. Brenneis was formerly Chief Sales Officer at M2M market leader Cinterion Wireless Modules and therefore has a strong background in M2M. Since then, they have been recruiting M2M specialists to strengthen this new group unit and aims to have 110 full time staff by the last quarter of this year. This will include regional heads for the Americas, AsiaPacific, and North, Central and South Europe, to be located in-region. To take one example, the plan calls for a new US team with an initial staff of 6, even though Vodafone has no direct presence in that market. Nevertheless, it does have a 45 percent stake in its affiliate, Verizon Wireless, the largest mobile operator in the US, now focusing on M2M following the establishment of nPhase as its M2M joint venture with Qualcomm.

Vodafone decided a while ago that M2M represented a strong opportunity for the Group, and subsequently appointed Erik Brenneis to the role of heading up a group M2M Line of Business unit, with overall responsibility for driving Vodafone’s growth in the M2M market. Mr. Brenneis was formerly Chief Sales Officer at M2M market leader Cinterion Wireless Modules and therefore has a strong background in M2M. Since then, they have been recruiting M2M specialists to strengthen this new group unit and aims to have 110 full time staff by the last quarter of this year. This will include regional heads for the Americas, AsiaPacific, and North, Central and South Europe, to be located in-region. To take one example, the plan calls for a new US team with an initial staff of 6, even though Vodafone has no direct presence in that market. Nevertheless, it does have a 45 percent stake in its affiliate, Verizon Wireless, the largest mobile operator in the US, now focusing on M2M following the establishment of nPhase as its M2M joint venture with Qualcomm.

The application works much like the popular RedLaser iPhone application in that it can scan an ISBN barcode on a book cover and then automatically look it up.

T-Mobile USA announced another quarter of customer defections, saying its total customers served declined by 93,000 in the second quarter compared with 77,000 net customer losses in the first quarter of this year. Android devices accounted for 27 percent of U.S. smartphone sales during the first half of 2010 according to data issued this week by The Nielsen Company, four percentage points higher than the iPhone--Android now makes up 13 percent of the U.S. smartphone market as a whole, trailing Research In Motion's BlackBerry (35 percent), iPhone (28 percent) and Microsoft's Windows Mobile (15 percent, down from 27 percent only a year ago).

T-Mobile USA announced another quarter of customer defections, saying its total customers served declined by 93,000 in the second quarter compared with 77,000 net customer losses in the first quarter of this year. Investors rewarded Sierra Wireless, Inc. Friday, after it released surprisingly strong second-quarter results and bullish guidance. On Nasdaq Friday, Sierra was up $1.12, or 14.8 percent, to $8.70 on 916,000 shares. Sierra, which makes wireless technology for mobile devices, reported second quarter revenue of $159.1 million, beating analyst estimates of $157 million, and a record for the period. The record second quarter revenue was driven by demand for the company's M2M wireless products, namely an embedded wireless device for Barnes and Noble's Nook eReader. M2M sales, which comprise roughly half the company's revenue, were up 50 percent to $83.6 million from $54.6 million in the same quarter of 2009. However, sales were down 5 percent from the first quarter, when the Nook was launched.

AT&T Inc., Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA are exploring a joint venture to develop a mobile-payment service that uses cellphones, people familiar with the matter said Monday, seeking to break into what is expected to be a fast-growing market. Investors rewarded Sierra Wireless, Inc. Friday, after it released surprisingly strong second-quarter results and bullish guidance. On Nasdaq Friday, Sierra was up $1.12, or 14.8 percent, to $8.70 on 916,000 shares. Sierra, which makes wireless technology for mobile devices, reported second quarter revenue of $159.1 million, beating analyst estimates of $157 million, and a record for the period. The record second quarter revenue was driven by demand for the company's M2M wireless products, namely an embedded wireless device for Barnes and Noble's Nook eReader. M2M sales, which comprise roughly half the company's revenue, were up 50 percent to $83.6 million from $54.6 million in the same quarter of 2009. However, sales were down 5 percent from the first quarter, when the Nook was launched.
