Welcome to Kevin's M2M News Monthly, an online newsletter that consists of the most interesting news and articles related to M2M (machine to machine) and embedded mobile devices that I read each week.  I aggregate the information, include the original links and add a synopsis of each article.  I also search for the latest market numbers such as market size, growth and trends in and around the M2M market.

At the end of 2010, roughly 80 million subscribers were using of M2M technology. That number is set to rise to 300 million subscribers by 2015 according to research done by Berg Insight. Europe and North America currently dominate the number of connected M2M devices and are expected to continue through 2020.

According to recent research carried out by InfoCom the M2M market shows significant growth potential worldwide.  M2M has become a fast growing and strategically important market for many companies and network operators as it provides new possibilities for services and solutions.

Sprint Nextel plans make a significant investment in its M2M technology to wirelessly connect devices like in car safety systems.  This new system will bring significant environmental, safety, efficiency and operational benefits.

The new year dawns with M2M growing, and growing quickly.  “Today, globally, there are 61 million M2M connections,” says Steve Hilton, head of Enterprise Research for Analysys Mason. “In 10 years, in 2020, there are going to be around 2 billion.”

Next generation vehicle telematics applications, such as in vehicle terminal assistance, automatic vehicle identifier systems, incident detection systems, fleet operation management systems and remote vehicle diagnostics in the post recession period will stimulate world commercial vehicle telematics market to reach $11.2 billion by 2015.

A senior official from the world's first zero carbon emission city, Masdar, told Gulf News that its aim is to make smart grids become part and parcel of future Abu Dhabi power grids.  The smart grid in Masdar will be operated by Siemens and will apply to Phase I of Masdar which includes one million square meters of land.

Cloud computing, once an object of skepticism, even taunts, is taking center stage at a handful of companies.  RehabCare Group, a 28 year old provider of therapeutic services, is using hosted software and an unlikely device - the Apple iPod Touch - to make its field workforce of 11,000 physical therapists more effective.

Location sharing service Foursquare recently announced that its ranks grew by 3,400 percent in the past year and that it now has more than six million registered users.  Foursquare lets people log their locations by "checking in" from where they are at any given moment using smartphones or other Internet-linked devices. Satellite location tracking capabilities of smartphones or mobile signal tower triangulation lets Foursquare estimate where members are when they check in.

In recent years several new technologies for remote healthcare have been investigated, including wireless sensors, low power connectivity units and backend software.  Newly formed Isansys Lifecare has integrated these components into to a user friendly end to end system, which they hope to market in various healthcare settings.

The recent implementation of vehicle telematics has led to significant reductions in fleet fuel consumption and operating costs for the City of Sacramento, which recently equipped over 400 vehicles with electronic fleet management products from Zonar Systems.  The solution optimizes vehicle routes, monitors vehicle performance, identifies opportunities for improvements in driver behavior and streamlines the pre and post trip inspection process.

FleetMatics, a market leader of GPS vehicle tracking applications for commercial fleets, has announced that its software is now integrated with fuel card purchase data.  The powerful new FleetMatics Fuel Card Reports enables users to reduce fuel usage and track MPG, pinpoint fuel card non-compliance, and correct fuel wasting driving behaviors.  The reporting also monitors a fleet's carbon footprint, helping better manage efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Fleet GPS tracking systems are being used more and more by local San Diego businesses, especially service-based businesses with unsupervised mobile employees on the road.  A vehicle GPS  tracking system can not only improve worker efficiency but a GPS tracking system can also help to cut fuel costs and improve customer service. “Within 90 days we were able to increase profits by over ten percent,” said John Barr, President of San Diego Windows and Decks Cleaning Services.

AT&T recently announced a new Location Information Services offering to enable transportation companies to capture location information from drivers’ handsets, regardless of hardware or wireless service provider.  The new offering also does not require additional software to be downloaded to handsets.

The M2M communication market has been a challenging place for cellular embedded module vendors over the past 18 months.  Despite its difficulties, however, this market is on an upward path. Unit shipment volume growth and the growing importance of 3G are already resulting in stronger performance and a new ABI Research study estimates that the market will be worth $3.8 billion in 2015.
