Mobile payment systems are expected to revolutionize the card payment industry in the coming years, and could be worth as much as $44 billion by 2015.

Consumers will significantly shift their shopping habits away from e-commerce to focus attention on the budding mobile landscape within the next 12 months, predicts research aggregator eMarketer.

Research shows that 40 percent of consumers reach for their mobile phones when they see an advertisement, with 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm being the hottest times for at home mobile shopping.

Sybase 365, a subsidiary of Sybase, Inc., is partnering with Commercial Bank of Qatar, the largest private sector bank in Qatar, for the launch of a comprehensive mobile banking and mobile payments service for its retail customers.

Ericsson, the world's largest mobile telecom equipment maker, has launched its own mobile banking system called Ericsson Money Services.  This business is designed to make mobile money transactions both easier and more available to those without access to traditional brick and mortar banks.

France’s three main mobile operators – Orange, SFR and Bouygues Telecom – and IT services firm Atos Origin have formed an online payments joint venture that will launch across France later this year.

Visa is reportedly testing an iPhone based mobile payment system for a limited number of users in Europe, taking the first concrete steps in bringing e-wallet technology to Apple's device.

Mobile banking technology is beginning to change people’s lives with the convenience of on the go money management.  Nearly every major bank and many smaller banks and credit unions have SMS messaging, websites formatted specifically for mobile devices, and applications developed for certain platforms, such as the iPhone, Android devices or the BlackBerry.

In app payments are now accounting for half the revenue generated for iPhone applications, according to data in a new Distimo report.  Thirty-four percent of iPhone app revenue is now coming from "free" apps which later charge for extra features.

TD Bank has released a mobile app for BlackBerry to help their customers do banking on the go.  The app is available for most devices and includes some great features for the 24/7 bank.  Included is the ability to check balances, transfer funds, make bill payments, find banks and ATMs, check account history and more.

LG is working on providing infrastructure for contactless payments.  The Korean company has set its sights on Europe, where it is conducting beta testing of point of sale technology that will facilitate paying for goods and services by swiping your phone near an NFC sensor.

Vitality, which developed a wireless, Internet connected pill bottle cap to remind patients to take their medication, has been acquired by Patrick Soon-Shiong M.D.   Soon-Shiong recently sold his second multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical company in three years and was already an investor in Vitality.

The UK is set to pioneer a contactless mobile payment system with the launch this summer of an NFC powered payments network following a partnership between Everything Everywhere (the chimera formed from the splicing together of T-Mobile and Orange) and credit card provider Barclaycard.

Mobile online shopping is growing in China following a surge in sales of smartphones and the growing use of 3G mobile networks necessary to access such services.

According to research from Yahoo! and Nielsen, U.S. mobile internet users expect shopping related activities in some categories to be more popular on mobile than they currently are on PCs.
