In the first three months of 2010, just 2.1 percent of smartphones shipped in Australia were based on the Android platform, but over the succeeding three months to the end of June, the percentage of Android shipments had more than trebled, reaching 7.1 percent at the end of that period. Then in the three months to the end of September, Android’s share of the smartphone market exploded again — up to 21 percent.

Samsung has been in overdrive to catch up with rivals Apple, which makes the iPhone and Research in Motion's BlackBerry in the smartphone sector. In the last quarter, Samsung tripled its market share to nine percent, making it the fourth biggest player in the smartphone segment.

A new report from International Data Corp. projects that the mobile application business will grow from 10.9 billion downloads this year to 76.9 billion downloads in 2014. This growth will also mean a 60 percent per year increase in mobile application revenue.

This week the U.S. military said that early next year it will begin field testing smartphones as part of its "Connecting Soldiers to Digital Applications" program. The first to be tested for the war zone will be iPhones and Androids.

According to Encoding.com, which encodes about a million videos a month for everyone from MTV to PBS, nearly 78 percent of its customers encode their mobile videos to play on Apple iOS devices (iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches), whereas only four percent encode specifically for Android devices. The remaining 18 percent encode for the 3GP format, which is used by feature phones.

It was the year of an explosion of data traffic, spurred by the increasing amount of content available for consumption through mobile phones, more capable smartphones and an ever increasing number of high end phone buyers. MobileFuture says one unnamed carrier’s data traffic has ballooned 3,000 percent since 2008.
