Mobile development vendor appMobi has just closed an impressive $6 million round of all angel series B financing to further provide platform as a service tools for developers and others in the mobile ecosystem.

Despite three years of global financial bleakness, 2010 brought huge growth to mobile/wireless.  Global handset shipments rose to more than 1.3 billion units, over 20 percent of them smartphones.

Late in 2010 Microsoft indicated that it had shipped 1.5 million Windows Phone 7 devices into the sales channel.  It didn’t say then how many were snapped up by end users.  Microsoft now has said that by the end of December 2010, the total number of devices shipped was actually 2 million.

Apple’s iOS devices, including iPhones and iPads, are increasingly being bought for use in companies.  They now account for 65 percent of all devices activated for enterprise use after discounting activations of Research in Motion’s BlackBerry enterprise phones, according to a report by Good Technology.

Google’s Android platform manager Eric Chu knows that though the number of Android smartphone users may be rising quickly, the number of purchases of paid apps in the Android Market is not doing nearly as well.

According to Appsfire, owners of iOS devices typically spend only 10 percent of their time in a mobile browser, inclusive of Web apps. This is in stark contrast to the figure of 50 percent of time spent in native apps, not including the default mail app and other typical telephony apps (mostly pre-installed apps, but also including Skype).

Market watcher Canalys said Wednesday that Apple's share of worldwide PC shipments, iPads and Macs included, increased 241 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010, giving the company an overall share of 10.8 percent.

According to the latest figures from research firm Gartner, sales of apps for the iPad, iPhone and other portable mobile phones and devices devices will exceed $15 billion this year.

While U.S. policymakers have been playing catch up, it has largely been U.S. created technology -- the internet, particularly Facebook and Twitter -- that has sustained the spread of the Arab revolution.

It’s no secret that Google has intentionally stayed clear of developing native smartphone apps – particularly for the iPhone.  Instead, the Internet giant has focused its attentions on developing web-based mobile websites/web applications where access is only limited by a browser. Well, according to a report on the WSJ, that is all soon to change.

Google's Android dethroned Nokia's Symbian as the most popular smartphone platform in the last quarter of 2010, ending a reign that began with the birth of the industry ten years ago.

As the first Windows Phone 7 models hit stores during the fourth quarter of 2010, the Android smartphone operating system significantly increased its market share lead by nine percentage points, since the prior quarter, to reach 53 percent of the U.S. consumer smartphone market.

In any context, SAP's fourth quarter was a memorable one:  revenue up 25 percent with strong contributions from all product lines, all geographies, industry verticals, and customer size.
