Kevin's Mobile Retailing News Weekly is an online newsletter that is made up of the most interesting news, articles and links related to mobile retailing applications and mobile marketing applications that I run across each week. A recent survey by GfK Roper Poll found that three in ten Americans currently use a smartphone, such as an iPhone or BlackBerry. Among consumers with those devices, 30 percent said that, while shopping, they used their phones to try to find better deals elsewhere; and 40 percent used their phones to compare prices.



Thirty percent of respondents in a recent survey said they expected to use mobile coupons during this holiday season, according to a new study by mobile marketing agency Briabe Media and mobile social networking company MocoSpace. Interestingly, only 14 percent said they normally use mobile coupons.



A recent survey indicates that 79 percent of smartphone users would like to be able to download discount shopping coupons to their mobile devices and 73 percent would like to receive money off coupons on items they see while shopping in a store.



The Mobile Marketing Association has announced its top ten predictions for mobile marketing in the Asia Pacific region, indicating ''The global mobile advertising market is expected to grow to $13 to $14 billion in 2011 and Asia Pacific is expected to bring in the majority of this revenue followed by North America and Europe.''



The Mobile Marketing Association published a set of guidelines and best practices for mobile promotions on December 21, urging marketers to use honesty and transparency in their mobile deals.



Advancements in technology combined with the growing consumer appetite for applications and innovative mobile products has led to a market where people are for once actively awaiting chances to interact with brands via their handsets in their own time.



Location-based advertising is poised to take the mobile medium by storm in 2011 and beyond, providing a channel that can engage brands with consumers in new and exciting ways.



The busiest online shopping season in history catapulted Amazon.com’s own third-generation Kindle to become its bestselling product in history, eclipsing “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the seventh book in the children’s series.



Mobile marketing and advertising is set to grow at an annual rate of 41 percent in 2015, according to new research from Berg Insight.

Andrew Dowell reported in the Wall Street Journal: “2010 was the Year of the App. Sometimes cheap, often silly, these little computer programs—there are hundreds of thousands of them—turned smartphones into game rooms, barcode scanners and photo manipulators.”



Fast food restaurants Carl's Jr. and Hardees have launched a location-based mobile application to reward loyal customers. Parent company CKE Restaurants said the company chose to build its own application, as opposed to partnering with existing location-based providers such as FourSquare, Gowalla, or Facebook Places.



Mobile phone companies are experimenting with a new way to steal their rivals' customers. Their new tactic involves mobile ads that appear when a person using a competitor's phone or network launches an application or browses the Web on their phone. The basic message: Oh, you could do better than that thing.



Based on recent trends social commerce and location-based services will dominate the 2011 market.
