Market researcher IHS iSuppli reported that Apple shipped 18.6 million smartphones in the first quarter, up from 16.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2010. That 14.9 percent increase marked the highest growth rate among the top five global smartphone vendors.

Google's Android was the top smartphone operating system in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2011, overtaking the market share of Research In Motion's BlackBerry and keeping Apple's iPhone in the third position, according to ComScore.

Motorola Mobility recently released first quarter 2011 results, and noted that a higher smartphone mix is bolstering average mobile phone pricing. The smartphone mix increased to 44 percent in first quarter 2011 compared to 27 percent in the same quarter last year, and average mobile phone pricing accordingly jumped to $229 from $193 last year.

In a recent research note, comScore suggested that Microsoft’s percentage of the U.S. smartphone market dipped from 8.4 percent to 7.5 percent between December 2010 and March 2011. This places the company fourth behind Google, Research In Motion and Apple.

Combined revenues from the four major mobile application stores run by Apple Inc., Google Inc., Nokia Corp. and Research in Motion Ltd. will leap 77.7 percent in 2011 to $3.8 billion, with the Apple App Store projected to eat up a gargantuan three-quarters share of the total market, according to new IHS Screen Digest research.

In the first three months of 2011, Microsoft’s average market share was 7.5 percent – a 0.9 point decrease from the company’s average share, 8.4 percent, in the final quarter of 2010, according to comScore data. According to the latest reports, sales of mobile applications, including both entertainment content and mobile casino games are up 77 percent this year and will amount to roughly $3.8 billion. Apple’s App Store with nearly $3 billion snatched the biggest slice of that pie. The Android Market firmly holds the number two spot with over $420 million in sales.
