For generations, we have celebrated the CEO who seemed to know everything. The visionary. The strategist. The decisive commander. The person at the top of the pyramid who saw farther, understood more, made the difficult calls, and directed everyone else toward the destination.

That model made sense in a world where information was scarce, expertise was concentrated, organizations moved relatively slowly, and most productive intelligence resided inside human beings.
That world is disappearing.
We are entering what we call the Sixth Great Transition, an era in which intelligence is becoming abundant, distributed, increasingly autonomous, and embedded throughout the systems around us. Artificial intelligence can already analyze, predict, recommend, create, communicate, coordinate, and act. Digital workers and AI agents will increasingly operate alongside human workers. Networks connect organizations, markets, machines, customers, suppliers, and institutions in real time.
The defining leadership problem is therefore changing.
The CEO of the future does not need to be the source of the organization's intelligence.
When Intelligence Is Everywhere
Imagine a CEO entering a strategy meeting five years from now. Around the table sit a dozen senior executives. But they are no longer the only participants in the decision.
AI systems have analyzed thousands of competitors, millions of customer interactions, supply-chain vulnerabilities, technological developments, regulatory changes, geopolitical risks, employee sentiment, pricing scenarios, and possible acquisitions.
Specialized AI agents have generated competing strategies. Other systems have challenged their assumptions. Simulations have modeled hundreds of possible futures. Predictive systems have estimated the probabilities of various outcomes.
The organization may know more than any leadership team in history. And the CEO still has to decide what to do. That is the paradox of leadership in an age of abundant intelligence.
More intelligence does not eliminate leadership. It makes leadership more consequential.
The central question moves from “What do we know?” toward “What should we do with what we know?” And eventually toward an even deeper question:
“Whom do we serve?”
The CEO as Orchestrator
The ideal CEO of the Sixth Great Transition will recognize that intelligence comes in different forms.
There is human intelligence: judgment, experience, empathy, creativity, ethics, imagination, narrative, relationships, and wisdom.
There is machine intelligence: calculation, memory, pattern recognition, prediction, simulation, optimization, scale, speed, and increasingly autonomous action.
And there is ecological intelligence: the accumulated information, adaptations, relationships, constraints, and feedback embedded within living systems.
The great leadership opportunity is not choosing one over another. It is learning how to orchestrate all three.
The CEO must continually ask: What kind of intelligence does this problem require? What should machines do? What should humans do? What should they do together? What constraints are imposed by the larger systems upon which the organization depends?
This changes leadership from a contest for intellectual superiority into an exercise in orchestration.
The best CEO may no longer be the smartest person in the room. The best CEO may be the person who knows how to make the intelligence in the room—and increasingly outside the room—work together.
Human Judgment Becomes More Valuable, Not Less
Artificial intelligence creates another paradox. As answers become cheaper, judgment becomes more valuable.
A future CEO may ask an AI system to develop five strategies for entering a market and receive them in seconds. Another system can critique them. A third can model their financial consequences. A fourth can identify regulatory risks. A fifth can simulate competitor responses.
But none of those systems eliminates the fundamental leadership problem. Which future should we choose?
The CEO must decide what deserves optimization in the first place. Should we maximize productivity? Profit? Growth? Market share? Employee well-being? Resilience? Innovation? Customer value? Environmental sustainability? Usually, optimizing one changes the others.
Leadership therefore moves beyond selecting the best answer toward determining what constitutes a good outcome.
That requires judgment. It also requires ethics.
The CEO Becomes an Institutional Designer
The Sixth Great Transition will force CEOs to confront questions that previous generations rarely encountered.
- What decisions may an AI make?
- What may it observe?
- What may it recommend?
- What may it execute without human approval?
- How much money may it spend?
- Can it negotiate with another company's AI?
- Can it hire a contractor?
- Can it change a price?
- Can it reject a customer?
- Can it alter an employee's responsibilities?
- And when must authority return to a human being?
These are not merely technology questions. They are questions about power, authority, responsibility, and organizational design.
The CEO of the future must therefore become an architect of decision rights.
Organizations will need clear boundaries governing where machine autonomy begins and ends. They will need mechanisms for escalation, oversight, accountability, learning, and intervention.
Because there is one principle leaders cannot afford to forget: Delegating a decision does not necessarily delegate responsibility.
Protecting Humans From Successful Automation
One of the greatest leadership dangers may not be failed automation. It may be successful automation.
Suppose an organization discovers that AI can perform increasingly sophisticated work faster, cheaper, and more consistently than people. The economic incentives will be powerful.
Automate.
Then automate again.
And again.
Eventually, however, leaders must confront a deeper question: What happens to human capability when people stop practicing the things machines now perform for them?
- Judgment can atrophy.
- Expertise can disappear.
- Agency can decline.
- Meaningful work can become supervisory work.
- People can lose their understanding of how the systems they supposedly oversee actually function.
- The organization may become more capable while its people become less capable.
That is not automatically progress.
The ideal CEO will therefore protect what I call Human Viability Conditions: coherence, agency, belonging, fairness, meaning, and identity continuity.
They will also deliberately cultivate the human capacities that become increasingly important as machines become more capable: judgment, ethics, empathy, creativity, narrative, and relational trust.
The question is no longer simply, “What can AI do?”
A wise CEO will also ask: “What do we need humans to become better at?”
Speed Is Not the Same as Progress
Digital systems operate at extraordinary speeds. Humans do not.
Trust takes time. Expertise takes time. Culture takes time. Relationships take time. Institutions take time. Meaning takes time. The ideal CEO will understand that organizations increasingly operate according to different clocks.
Technology may change in weeks while people require years to adapt.
Markets may demand immediate responses while the consequences of those responses unfold over decades.
The temptation will be to force everything onto the machine's clock.
That would be a mistake. Sometimes leadership means accelerating. Sometimes leadership means deliberately slowing the system down. The ability to know the difference may become one of the defining executive skills of the coming decades.
And above all, they will continually return to the question that should sit at the center of leadership in an age of extraordinary technological power:
“Whom do I serve?”
The ideal CEO will orchestrate increasingly powerful forms of human, machine, and ecological intelligence toward futures in which people, organizations, societies, and ecosystems can flourish together—and accept responsibility for the consequences.
That is not simply a new job description for the CEO.
It is a new definition of leadership.
