Apple has rolled out the fifth generation of its market-leading tablet. Among its new features, the iPad will weigh one pound, down from 1.4 pounds. It's 20 percent thinner and 28 percent lighter than the current fourth-generation iPad.  Read Original Content

Swedish wireless equipment company Ericsson AB reported a 34 percent increase in third quarter net profit to 2.92 billion Swedish kronor ($458 million), compared with 2.18 billion kronor a year earlier. Sales in the quarter dropped by three percent to 52.98 billion kronor amid negative currency effects and lower sales in North East Asia and India. Read Original Content

Concerns for the mobile communication industry’s growth and future are rising, as the number of this year’s new smartphone users has increased by only 50 percent compared to last year’s statistics.   According to the industry and the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, last year there was an average of 2.54 million new smartphone users per quarter. But so far up to August this year, the average dropped to 1.35 million new users per quarter. The increase range reached only 53.1 percent of last year’s numbers.   Read Original Content

According to a new market research report, World Mobile phone & Smartphone Market (2010 – 2015), the total global mobile handset market is expected to reach $341.4 billion by 2015 while smartphone sales will account for 75.8 percent of the overall mobile handset revenue at $258.9 billion in the same year.  Read Original Content

Since last month the citizens of Johannesburg have been able to hail and pay for taxis through SnappCab, a local start-up. A tap on SnappCab’s smartphone app summons a cab; a driver accepts on his own phone; and the passenger sees the driver’s name and photo, so he knows whom to expect and when. Businesses are adopting mobility at a staggering speed as the latest mobility index report reveals a 60 percent increase in the number of devices activated.  The Good Mobility Index report for the second and third quarters this year has found total device activations for the quarter rose nearly 60 percent from the same time last year.  Read Original Content
