At its second annual developer conference, PayPal announced the release of Mobile Express Checkout, a platform that will allow customers to pay for retail products in stores using only their mobile phones.



Retailers are wising up to the trend in mobile coupons, according to a recent report by IHL Group and RetailConnections. Many are set to implement systems that will allow them to deliver coupons directly to a consumer's mobile phone.



People are using their smartphones to check product reviews online, compare prices and find nearby stores. Retailers are slowly adapting to the technology, with some offering apps.



iPhone and Android users now have access to the new innovative location-based mobile applications that could help them increase their savings.



Sixty-one percent of mobile operators surveyed thought that coupons or vouchers would become the dominant form of mobile marketing by 2015.



As advertisers rush to come to terms with the recent explosion in web-enabled devices and content, it is becoming increasingly clear that now is the ideal time to embrace and understand moble as an advertising medium.

Joan Dal Bianco, TD Bank's vice president of the online channel, sees a revolution in the potential of smartphones to change how consumers access banking — particularly when banks are able to look beyond providing only traditional financial services.


A growing number of mobile payments companies are promoting systems that charge purchases to users' phone bills rather than credit or debit cards.



Mobile banking, and by extension mobile payments, have rapidly crossed the line from add on to necessary products for financial institutions.



PayPal Mobile general manager Eric Duprat keynoted the final day of ARM TechCon in Santa Clara last week. He predicts that within five years the majority of $5.5 trillion in retail transactions that occur face-to-face will be handled through mobile devices.



Square was unveiled last December as a small credit card reader that could turn any iPhone into a mobile cash register. The startup has since unveiled apps for the iPad, Android and iPhone.



Earlier this fall, the Internet payment giant PayPal offered the ability to donate money to causes and the ability to deposit checks straight into your PayPal account from your phone in an update to its iPhone app.



More than one million people in the UK have used PayPal to make a payment or send money from their mobile phones.
